Summary: Hangs every once in a whule
Review: I have 3-4 computers connect to this modem at any given time.
If there is a lot of traffic the modem just hangs !
I need to restart it (a 30sec process) and everything is back to normal ... but it's really annoying that I have to restart it ..
the freq is about 2 times a week and if I create a lot of traffic even every 20 min !!

Summary: Saving Money Times Two
Review: Picked up this little gem after my last modem rental -- $3.00 a month for the past two years to "rent" one from MediaOne > AT&T > Comcast. Back in September, Amazon was running a "killer" deal: $59.99 for the modem, free shipping, AND a $30 mail-in rebate. Figured a ten month ROI, plus improved firmware, what did I have to lose? Comcast set up was even easier than following the Quick Start instructions. After hooking up the new modem to my PC (NOT the router like I tried to do the first time), just enter their special site on my browser (sas.we1.attbb.net), enter some info from my cable bill, reboot, and I'm up and flying. No MAC screw-ups or anything. Plus I like the way my "Linkys" look stacked up. If you're considering this modem, don't forget the matching router. Happy webbing!

Summary: Modem locks up During p2p file sharing
Review: See the other comments about the modem locking up! This modem will lock up if you do peer to peer file sharing. My experience was that the modem would have to be power cycled every 1-2 hours when doing large downloads. I replaced this modem with a DLINK DP102 and have had no resets. I'll sell my Linksys on Ebay.

etc. Here is what I did for pain-free installation. 1) Connect the modem via RJ-45 directly to the computer, if you can. You want to make sure you don't have a dead modem. 2) Your computer should be able to see the modem and try to configure it. I have XP Pro and it saw the modem fine. 3) You can configure it with the computer OR connect the modem to your network since you know the modem is not dead. 4) If you decide to install on network, turn off the power to computers, router, etc. Install the modem with your CAT5 cable to your router. Turn on your modem, let it boot up, then fire up the router, then your computers. Make sure you watch the LEDs with each step. 5) Watch your LEDs carefully, noting that your router is picking up the signal from the modem. 6) If everything works great, you are about to enter broadband internet and loving it. All is needed now is for your cable company to create your account, put in your modem model #(serial code) and MAC address. 7) Make sure your cable installer or you(buyer of modem), tells the cable office the correct MAC address. Errors will lead to no internet. 8) Install the software given to you by your cable company on the main computer that you will use the most. I would install the software on a computer that is wired to your network, if at all possible. The software will engage the cable networks to finalize your setup per your account and MAC address on your modem. 9) This modem might take anywhere from a 30 seconds to 2 minutes to find and acquire the signal from your cable company, so don't jump to conclusions that it doesn't work or that your modem is dead. 10) Now, turn everything off again, starting with computers, router and then modem. Wait about 2 minutes and then turn everything on the reverse: MODEM(letting it bootup), then ROUTER(letting it bootup) and last, COMPUTERS. 11) Reconfigure your web browser to connect from LAN, instead of dial-up. You should now be able to connect to the internet through your cable modem and cable company. Final thoughts: If I remember correctly, I did not have to use the installation CD that came with the modem. Just follow the "Quick Installation" procedure. The boot-on and boot-off hints I picked up from other users, thanks guys; it works like a charm. The CABLE LED should remain solid when you are "registered" with your cable company. You might have to register more than once, if the first time it doesn't work. If your computer freezes in the middle of installing the cable company software; like mine did, don't panic. Just reboot the computer and start from the beginning of the install again. Although I like DSL; I was fed-up with all the DSL hype because I can't get DSL here. Our phone lines in our area are old which translates to mean "crap". Plus having DSL, you might have two(2) bills; one from phone company AND one from the ISP for your DSL broadband account. Cable broadband is just ONE bill and no-hidden fees or surprises. I would recommend the BEFCMU10 to anybody who is interested in cable broadband. Summary: Good deal so far
Review: Just received the modem. Unpacked. Followed the instalation manual and it's done. You will just have to call your cable provider to setup the MAC. Be ready to give them the MAC, number, Serial number and the modem specification number. The MAC number and the serial number are provided below the equipment but Linksys smartly attached those numbers right on top of the soft box so you don't need to flip the modem when the operator ask you for this data.
All process ... arrive at home and be connected with the new modem took less than half hour !!! (it's because the huge delay to talk with the Comcast customer service).
Another tip ... if you are using a Router (in my case wireless connection) after you are done with your cable provider, turn off everything and then turn on in the following order: modem - router - computer.
The modem seems to provide slightly faster connection than my rented one - RCA DCM245.
That's it save money in your cable bill and enjoy the rebate from Amazon. The savings that you get with this modem are gonna to be fully paid in ten months.
Good deal so far.

Summary: Not a reliable modem - too many resets and poor tech support
Review: I experienced an issue with my internet connection resetting every 4 hours ever since I purchased my Linksys cable modem. I called my firewall manufacturer, sent extremely detailed diagnostic logs, and ruled out the firewall as the cause. I then had the cable company check the line and they changed several connectors and removed a splitter to give me a very high signal strength. Still the connection reset every 4 hours. I called Linksys technical support and they recommended that I "unplug the cable modem for 120 seconds to clear out all of that bad packets and the that will fix the problem." Wrong, no change. I got a loaner Motorola SB5100 modem from my cable company and my connection did not go down one single time during a 14-day period (verified by my firewall and the cable company router.) Goodby Linksys DOCSIS 1.0 cable modem. I've switched to a much more reliable and more advanced DOCSIS 2.0 Motorola SB5100.

Summary: Reliable, Fast Performer with Easy Setup
Review: I'm using this cable modem with Adelphia PowerLink service and getting great results. Setup was very simple - plug n play was so quick that I almost missed it. Since then, it's just done exactly what I've asked it to do with no problems. If you want to plug it in and forget it, then this is a very good choice for you - just check with your ISP for compatibility first.

Summary: Totally Awesome!!! GREAT Modem!!!
Review: What can be said of this modem! It is awesome! I had the Motorola Surfboard modem for a while (provided to me by 'then attbi.com' and it finally quit working. I got this modem to replace the Motorola and WOW! I hooked it up.. and within seconds, it had already sync'd up! This without even calling Comcast/ATTBI!!! I was using this modem to play the 'net without even calling Comcast/ATTBI. Talk about surprised. I went ahead and contacted them to ensure full connectivity, and all they did was document/register online the new MAC address... nothing could have been easier... (wish other dealings with Comcast/ATTBI was this easy). Modem comes with both ethernet, and USB cables so its up to you how you want to connect to your PC. The additional LED lights on the front are there to enhance trouble shooting, but so far, they have not been needed. In addition, after having my 3com 'sharkfin' modem for nearly a year, the Motorola SSurfboard for nearly 2 years, and after hooking up this modem, my speed is nearly 25% faster than with the Motorola SB4100.. I did not think just a modem could make such a difference with Broadband Cable service. I would HIGHLY recommend this modem for all Comcast/ATTBI customers.. Mike Heine ('winterstone')

Review: I recently switched to a cable ISP and researched the purchase of a modem through AMAZON. I found the customer reviews very helpful as I ran into the same problems most other people have. These include the fact that the USB connection for this modem doesn't work (does LINKSYS read these reviews?)and that the cable company's "techie" kept on entering the wrong MAC and serial numbers. Once the cable guy hung up and re-called, getting another "techie", the codes were entered correctly and the modem was up and running. Now, will this "crash" after about a year as the majority of the older reviews say and will I spend hours on the phone with a clueless LINKSYS technician?
