Rating: Summary: Excellent Product Review: Going from DOCSIS 1.0 to 2.0 greatly helped my internet connection. I use Comcast Cable for my connection and it was seemless. No configuration whatsoever.
I am also in the Information Technology field and have used this for one of the remote sites I take care of. They've never complained about the connection dropping or being too slow.
Rating: Summary: Flashing Power Light Review: My brand new SB5100 didn't work. With just its power cord hooked up, the power light was flashing on and off. Turns out this means the modem is bad. So I'm returning it for a replacement.
Rating: Summary: Best Bet Review: Technology is at it's best when you don't even realize it's there. That's how to best summarize this modem. I've had it for a year now, hooked up with CableVision OptimumOnline cable internet service and it's been working....just working. That's a good thing :) I haven't had to shut it off once, haven't had to reconfigure it once, haven't had to even look at it...it just sits there and works (it'd be nice if everything was so simple).
This is the third cable modem I've owned. Previous models include one RCA and one Zoom. The RCA was, by far, the worst piece of hardware made. EVAR. The Zoom modem is pretty good, it's still in service at my mom's house, but it requires a restart every so often (unplug, plug back in). Unlike the aforementioned, this modem has been 100% trouble and maintenance free, even after a year of dutiful service.
I have mine hooked up to a Netgear wireless router with zero problems and zero configuration on the part of the cable modem. If you're tired of continually fiddling with your current modem just to get service or you're getting a cable modem for the first time and you're still not sure what you should get, then you should seriously consider getting this modem.
Rating: Summary: Great for a year then disconnects Review: I recently called my cable company due to frequent disconnects and they said the log on the modem was telling them I was having spyware, I checked my computers no spyware, checked the modem's config... and found that it's having problems of it's self thinking it's January 1, 1970... Would never buy this product and am returning mine to the cable company.
Rating: Summary: Amazon Shipping Problems Review: After reading that "This item normally ships within 24 hours", I placed an order for the Motorola Surfboard SB5100 Cable Modem at Amazon.com. Two and a half months later, I still have not received this modem despite multiple automated emails from Amazon warning of delays with this item, but noting that "It is not possible to cancel any items that have already entered the shipping process". While the note says that I can refuse shipment or return it for a refund, I'll have to pay shipping costs if I return it for a refund. Amazon staff, whom I've contacted by discovering how to go through the maze for communicating them, tell me that the promotional certificate which I used to place this order and has since expired will be credited to my account on my next purchase. TBD.
In my opinion, Amazon's message "This item normally ships within 24 hours" is misleading. Amazon should replace this message with a more accurate message and permit customers to cancel orders that are in the order queue. Until that happens, Amazon customers should be wary of Amazon's promises.
