Summary: Good Product / Easy to Install
Review: I picked up my modem and installed it in just a couple of minutes. It was easy. When I log on, it seems to connect at 49333 every time. I guess that is good because my 33.6 connected at 31.9. I was going to buy that $25 one with the $20. rebate but from the reviews - you get what you pay for. I went with Diamond and I am glad I did. The box says the requirements are for a pentium 133 or higher. I have a Pentium 120 and it has worked great.

Summary: Great Buy for the Price
Review: I purchased this Modem and have had no problems. Installation was easy and painless. I occasionally have problems with the VXD driver in WIN98 but that will be soon corrected by the manufacturer and it only seems to happen when I let the connection sit for a long period of time with out activity. Overall this modem is a good buy!

Summary: Know Your Computer
Review: I purchased this modem for my folks PC and it works great. They're running Win98SE on an 800Mhtz Athlon with 160 MB RAM. This brings me to a point I think is important. Some reviewers (running Win2K or WinXP) left negative reviews for this item because it didn't work with their computers. My advice is to know your computer before you buy ANY hardware for it. You should know what operating system you're running (and its version) and your hardware configuration (at least your CPU speed, RAM and hard drive space). If you're using Windows, right-clicking on "My Computer" and selecting "Properties" will give you most of the info you need. So will "System Information" in the "System Tools" folder. It's a simple rule and will save you a great deal of time and trouble in the long run.

Summary: THIS 56K IS VERY DISSAPOINTING!
Review: I really do not like this 56k. It is hard to hook up and it keep booting me off!!!!! I hate it!. I dont think this is worth anything. three words, dont buy it!

Summary: did not work for me
Review: I tried installing this modem with Windows 2000. The operating system failed to detect the modem. The manuals and documentation all seemed to assume that the modem would be automatically detected, so they were not helpful in my case. I tried contacting tech support via their web page and while their site loaded fine, that page timed out. I tried calling tech support and received a message stating, "We're sorry, we can't take your call right now." It seems that plenty of people have had good experiences with this modem, but I feel burned not so much by the fact that it didn't work out of the box, but that support for the product is woefully lacking.

Summary: A Headache
Review: Judging by the mixed reviews this modem has gotten it seems to work great for some folks but not for others. Unfortunately, I'm one of the poor saps it didn't work very well for. I needed a new modem after my OEM modem (a U.S. Robotics that I never had a lick of trouble with) was fried during an electric storm. It was my own fault--I didn't have it wired through my surge protector. I was attracted to the Supramax by the cheap price and a $10 rebate offer. My first beef with the product is that, after sending in ALL of the required documentation for the rebate, I never got the rebate. Nor did I ever get an explanation as to why not. My second beef with the product is that it just didn't work very well. Unfortunately I thought the problem was with my ISP for a long time before I realized that the problem was the modem. The most common problems were sometimes having to dial in 2-3 times before getting online, having the line dropped from time to time, and the dreaded "can't find server" errors in my web browser. I also occaisionally couldn't download my email because my email client said it "couldn't find mail server". When I started getting those messages it was like I wasn't even online! I noticed that my modem driver software was pretty old and I did find an update on the Diamond web site. No improvement. I finally switched to a new ISP and started having the same problems. Then one day I finally realized that one of my daughters, who still has a 28.8K U.S. Robotics OEM modem in her old machine, was connecting to the same ISP that I was and having NONE of these problems. When my modem wouldn't do squat I would go down to her room and dial in with no trouble. To make a long story short, I bought another 56K U.S. Robotics modem about a month ago and have had NO more problems! I went through the better part of a year cursing my ISP's when in reality the problem was the flakey Diamond Supramax modem. The diagnosis was further complicated by the fact that the modem worked almost perfectly during low use hours (typically between 10pm and the wee hours of the morning) but worked horribly during peak hours (typically between about 3pm and 9pm). I was impressed with the high connection speeds I was getting with the Supramax (typically between 40K and 48K) and I am getting slower connect speeds with the U.S. Robotics (typically 28.8K to 38K). However, the U.S. Robotics turns out to be much faster because it works ALL the time. This is just a guess, but my gut tells me that the Supramax was trying too hard to get fast connect speeds, then was getting fouled up, perhaps by line noise. The U.S. Robotics settles for slower connect speeds, but gets MUCH, MUCH more reliable connections that end up working faster in the end. I haven't seen the "can't find mail server message" or "can't find server" message ONCE since getting the new modem. Turns out my ISP works very well during peak hours after all, I just never knew it because my Supramax modem was a piece of dung that just kept stalling during peak hours for some reason. The Supramax is going out with my garbage. Incidentally this is my second disappointment with Diamond products. My computer came with a Diamond Viper Ultra display adapter. While I haven't had NEAR the same level of problems with it that I had with the modem it has had its problems. They are rare and unpredictable. I occaisionally get trashy remnants of closed/moved windows frozen on my screen and after running Windows Media Player for a long time my computer eventually locks up. When it comes time to buy a new video adapter, I think I'll try another manufacturer. Heck, I'd try another manufacturer just because they screwed me out of my $10 Supramax rebate! And they make flakey products on top of that. No brainer....

Summary: This modem goes both ways (3.3 and 5 volts)
Review: Like other people have said before me, this modem won't break through the 50Kbs barrier. My external xircom [serial port] modem could connect at 53 kbs on the same line. (The effective difference between 49 kbs and 53 kbs is negligible though, so who cares) The drivers for this modem loaded easily the first time, and when I clean-installed win2000, they automatially re-installed, no questions asked. On a side note: This modem supports the rare 3.3 volt standard. (Some high-end workstations and servers use the 3.3 volt standard, but everyone else uses the 5 volt standard- so this doesn't matter for most people. 3 volts is an "emerging" standard which will probably never catch on). Most pci modems only fit into 5 volt PCI slots. A 3.3 volt pci card slot has different gooves so that you can't mistakenly put a 5 volt card into it. The supramax is compatable with both. (Silicon Graphics pointed me towards the supramax after I struck out with another modem). Closing comments: This modem has served me well, but now it collects dust inside my computer, thanks to my cable modem. It's still nice to know that it's there for me, and I use it occasionally to test how long my sites take to load for the [not-yet-broadbanded] people

Before my previous modem died, I rarely got above 24000 bps on it. With this modem, I rarely get above 19200, and usually am at 16800. I don't recommend this to anyone who has connection speed problems with other modems.

Summary: BUY THIS MODEM !
Review: My Cardinal 33.6 would only connect to my ISP at 24 to 26. This Diamond installs quick and simple and now I connect at 41333. A great price for a huge boost to my PC'c performance. Thanks for a GREAT deal Amazon !
