Rating: Summary: A must have! Review: I was skeptical on whether an optical mouse would have any benefit over the traditional track ball. I was very pleasantly surprised! I am running Windows2000, which instantly and without reboot, recognized the mouse. It is the four-wheel-drive of mice. I have ordered one for all my systems!
Rating: Summary: This is the reason I switched mice! Review: Ever notice that mice are usually made for right-handed people and that if you are left handed you have to make special software changes to use it? Also when troubleshooting the left handed mouse the technician usually get annoyed at the user, want all this to change?Well then install the Intellimouse Optical from Microsoft and watch the change. The mouse comes with 5 , count them 5 buttons and is made for either left or right handed people and no special changes other than the button configuration have to be made. Setup and configuration was a snap and both Windows 9X and 2000 found the mouse, the software included allowed me to customize the 5 button to fit my right handed style and to fit a co-workers left handed style all at the same time. The fact the mouse ball is replaced by an optical eye means that this mouse will last longer and break down less, my son likes the red lights when the mouse is active. If Microsoft comes out with a cordless version I'll be in mouse heaven. Another victory for Microsoft Hardware!
Rating: Summary: Once it's working - It works great Review: It took about 4 reboots for it to finaly work - which I shouldn't have to do with a USB device. I've put in USB scanners and such with less work. Still - I'm happy with it. Works great. I went from a trackball marble to this IntelliMouse - I'm not yet sure which I like better, but I think it will work better for games and photoshop. :)
Rating: Summary: Blows the competition into the dirt! Review: OK, I'll make this short and sweet. I have for some time tolerated many different types of mouse, many bought as a false economy - "A cheap mouse is all I need". Wrong! After having seen the older Intellimouse Explorer that my good friend Bazzroid had bought recently I thought perhaps my mind would be changed. However, I came to the conclusion that it was overpriced and unwieldly. A truly MAJOR disappointment! Not so with the new Intellimouse Optical. This revision on the older product now gives both left and right-handed users a chance to experience the delights of 'no-ball' action. Let's just say that after having tried one I had to buy it. My old mouse went where it belonged, in the trash can. My friend Bazzroid took one look at this new model and knew he had to get his Explorer version swapped for the Optical. He's still looking for a buyer. No luck so far! If you're in the market for a new mouse then look no further. Get one - TODAY!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Product Review: This is my second Microsoft mouse since December. I purchased the Intellimouse Explorer as a Christmas gift to myself and loved it. The size and button placement never bothered me, but the color and overall appearance did. Microsoft got it right with Intellimouse Optical! Its color more closely matches the rest of my system, the placement of the extra buttons is admittedly more logical, and the price is even cheaper! Best of all, it's identical to its more expensive sibling in terms of features and performance. The included Intellipoint software allows you to customize the mouse action (scrolling speed, cursor speed, etc.) and cursor appearance to your liking, and each of its five buttons can be reprogrammed to perform some other function if you'd like. As with the Intellimouse Explorer, my favorite feature allows you to lock the scroll wheel by depressing it momentarily. Then, to scroll through a document, simply move the mouse upwards or downwards. The farther upwards or downwards that you move the mouse, the faster the scrolling speed will be. It's rare for me to spend this much money on a product, especially when a previous product is functioning properly, but I gladly parted with the money for Intellimouse Optical. It performs beautifully, looks and feels great, and is worth every cent of the purchase price.
Rating: Summary: Nice mouse though not perfect. Review: This mouse has great optical resolution (1500 dpi) which results in extremely precise pointer movement. The shape is fairly comfortable and the button placement is well thought of. I especially appreciate the buttons on either side of the mouse which act as back and forward buttons for the internet browser. The plain beige color is also nice if one has a plain beige PC setup like I do. There are, however, a couple of problems that I encountered. Because of the lack of support for the right side of one's palm, the pinky finger could get sore after sustained mouse use. The previous generation MS mouse does not have this problem it seems. Also the optics would not work correctly on certain type of surfaces; any surface that is shinny/reflective, or too complicated like a photographic mouse pad, the pointer will jump and skip pretty regularly. If one does not mind the ergonomics of the mouse and use it on recommended surfaces, this little device is about as good as they come.
Rating: Summary: Best mouse I have ever used Review: I had seen the Microsoft mouse with intellieye technology on the internet for a couple of months. I was getting sick and tired of my mouse jumping around and getting stuck, so I decided to order the Optical mouse. And I love it. I have only had it a couple of days, but already its precision, accuracy, and cool laser makes it the best mouse I have ever owned. I would definately recommend it.
Rating: Summary: THE Mouse to Have Review: This is *the* mouse to have! First, unlike its bigger sibling the IntelliMouse Explorer, this one doesn't have too many buttons that simply confuse you. The buttons on this model are located at the right place for your fingers to click and they are all very resonsive. Now the pad-less operation, it's simply fantastic. I had my doubts about its useability until I tried it at CompUSA. I've been using this for weeks and it simply works on any surface I've tried. Just incredible. The movement is smooth and accurate and the feeling that you never have to worry about dust (okay, not really true since you have to keep the lens clear of dust, but better than dust-collecting mouse ball) is liberating. The shape is ergonomic, continuing Microsoft's tradition of building ergonomic input devices. I now hope there will be a wireless edition sometime soon. (MS: are you listening?)
Rating: Summary: Good mouse overall, but the side buttons are impractical Review: The optical mouse tracking works quite well. My desk's surface doesn't have enough color variation for the mouse's camera to track properly, so I still use a mousepad; but I still find the mouse pointer's movement to be quite a bit more consistent than with most mechanical mice. I don't find the two side buttons on the mouse to be particularly practical, though; I don't need to go back and forward in my browser often enough to justify two mouse buttons just for that purpose, and the 'back' button is positioned in such a way that it's fairly easy to click it accidentally with your thumb while moving the mouse. I also find the extra LED to be a bit silly. (This is the LED in the curved window at the bottom edge of the mouse that you can see in the picture; it has no function--it's just there to glow and 'impress' passersby into saying "Wow, that must be that newfangled optical model...") You might want to consider the basic Intellimouse with IntelliEye instead; it has the same optical mouse mechanism in a more standard form factor, without the side buttons and the extra day-glo LED.
Rating: Summary: just not worth the money Review: After 5 days I unplugged and repackaged this mouse for return.I found that without the mousepad,it made enough noise on my desk that I eventually put the mousepad back. Also,I found I myself accidentally hitting the left side button sending me "back" when surfing the web.It could be me,but I do not like the design of these side buttons.I noticed no actual improvement over my Microsoft Wheel Mouse, and realized popping that little ball out 3 or 4 times a year isn't all that big a deal.
