Rating: Summary: Cool gear! Review: I work as a writer for a software design company. I do a moderate amount of travelling, and tons of moving around the company campus to various meeting locations. Before I bought the keyboard, I used a notepad and pen to take notes. This meant that everywhere I went I had to remember to take my Palm, notebook, and pen. Then I would type my handwritten notes into my PC. It was time consuming, and less than ideal. Now, I just plunck down my IIIc and keyboard and type away. Then I hotsync, and - presto - my notes are on my PC. No muss, no fuss. The keyboard is quiet enough to use during meetings, and small enough to fit on an airline tray-table. I love this thing! Highly recommended for those who do a lot of writing on-the-go. Much better than the Go-Type keyboard (which I investigated, but didn't buy), as I can put my IIIc in one coat pocket, and the keyboard in the other, and never notice that they're there. I've had none of the problems indicated in other reviews - the software installation was a breeze, the keyboard itself has worked flawlessly, and it has withstood heavy use quite well. One caveat - the keyboard must rest on a solid surface other than your lap, as the center hinge will allow it to "sag" slightly in the center if it is not supported. A great gizmo for gadget-heads.
Rating: Summary: This review is here to help Review: The Palm V Portable Keyboard. As much as I'd like to help, I cant' be the judge of if you need a keyboard, but if you are considering an option for text input for your palm this is a great alternative and hands down the best keyboard, of any type, for the Palm unit. Did I say hands down, yes, without a doubt. Though some are in denial, it's a fact that some people just don't take well to the graffiti writing system. The unit needs no external power supply, it gets its energy from the Palm. The energy passes through the docking connection on the bottom of your Palm unit. The same connection that will allow you to plug your Palm into the keyboard. The keyboard has a nice balance of bounceback on your fingers and also enough click to tell that you've typed a key. So it doesn't sound like a typewriter, yet is lets you know that it's there. It's large enough that you won't feel like you're trying to organize a stamp collection yet it fits on a desk comfortably. After owning one for a while you may notice that the hinges loosen up and allow it to fold quicker. This is good for storage, but bad when on your lap. Don't get me wrong it won't fold completely in half but it does make it more challenging to type in those situations where you need to type on the go(bus, train, car). While folded up for storage mode, the keyboard is roughly twice the thickness of the Palm V unit, as well as slightly wider and taller. If you are a loyal Palm owner there is another fact that may give you a sense of confidence, the keyboard is a Palm Licensed Product and of very high quality. So take a moment to ponder your grasp of the graffit/stylus writing input. Once you've decided that you need options the hard part is over and the Palm keyboard is waiting.
Rating: Summary: Palm V portable keyboard Review: I don't have as many nice things to say about this product as other people. It is a VERY NICELY designed piece of equipment (I saw that it won some design awards) but I cannot do things like entering business card info without both the keyboard and the stylus. For instance, you can use Fn+New to create a new contact but when you are done, you have to use the stylus to click on the "done" button because there is no Fn+Done on the keyboard. Also, if you are looking at the list of contacts, you have to use the stylus to select the entry in the list that you want to see/edit. There is no way to highlight the previous or next line with the keyboard (that I have found). Another interesting point is that you cannot have both a cable to a cellphone (for instance) and the keyboard connected at the same time. I presume, though I have not checked, that the IR port would be the only mode of data communications with the keyboard attached. This would require the cool little PDA kickstand feature to be laid prone for use with some of the phones. In short, it's a neat little product with some usability hangups. You might find yourself drifting back towards the Palm Desktop application after a few uses.
Rating: Summary: Functional, time-saving, and (relatively) affordable Review: The first Palm I purchased was an m105 last summer. I immediately purchased a Palm folding keyboard for m100 series PDAs. Now, a bit less than a year later, I've purchased an m130 and Palm m130-compatible keyboard. I have quite a bit to say about the folding keyboards Palm sells. 1. Price: The keyboard can be pricey (current retail price is three-quarters of the current retail price of an m105), but, if you're a student or find yourself in situations requiring you to take extensive notes, it's more than worth shelling out the cash. Amazon sells for a great price, so buy from here as opposed to retail stores. 2. Durability: I am a sophomore in college, and I use my Palm and its keyboard to take notes every single day. My keyboard has never been damaged, although I must note that it could break if you're not careful. Since it is a folding model and not one solid piece of machinery, the keyboard could snap if bent the wrong way. You also need to use this keyboard on a flat surface, as other reviewers have noted. If you don't have a desk nearby, though, just prop the keyboard up on a clipboard, notebook, textbook, etc. It's not that big of a hassle. 3. Ease of use: The biggest complaint about PDAs is the pain of using Graffiti to enter data into your device. Graffiti is indeed tiresome; I don't know how many times my Palm has incorrectly identified letters, requiring me to delete and re-enter. Very time-consuming, especially if you're taking notes during a lecture! Obviously, this keyboard eliminates the problem. I don't know about the average joe, but I type a heck of a lot faster than I can write with Graffiti, or even write with a traditional pen and paper. Taking notes in class is a breeze with the keyboard-- no hand cramps, no crossing out errors, no scribbling in the margins because your teacher forgot to mention something earlier... It's great. 4. Quick copies: As others have mentioned, after you take notes using the keyboard, simply HotSync your data with your PC and print. Eaaaaaasy and fast. When friends at school are sick and miss class, they don't have to copy notes from others by hand-- I just print them off a copy of mine. 5. Portability: This keyboard is very, very portable and surprisingly compact. The keyboard is broken into four parts, loosely connected. Just slide the clasp to pop open the keyboard, unfold, slide the outside two pieces along the connecting tracks until they lock with the inside two, and stick your PDA in the cradle. Ok, maybe it sounds complicated without the keyboard in front of you, but it's incredibly easy. When the keyboard is folded and closed, it's just a bit bigger than the PDA itself. Truly awesome. 6. Coolness: Finally, I have to mention the "cool" factor. I must say I enjoy the stares I get from classmates the first time I whip out this gizmo. It's a great way to break the ice with new people, and it makes you seem cutting-edge when everyone else takes out a pen and paper for lectures. I give this product 4 stars out of 5 because of its price and the potential for breaking. I do point out once more, however, that Amazon has a great price for this keyboard. Also, I do acknowledge that there might not be an affordable way to make a sturdier folding keyboard. I would suggest to Palm that they include some sort of small, sliding plastic pieces on the underside of the folding pieces to perhaps provide some sort of braces so the keyboard couldn't bend the wrong way. Other than these minor flaws, this is a solid investment. Parents, get your kids this great tool.
Rating: Summary: Greatest accessory for the Palm Review: This turns the Palm into an even more valuable tool. I now take notes at meetings very unobtrusively and write email on the plane. It's a very elegant solution and has won many awards. It's on the cover of PC Week as the best design product of the year. It's almost magical how it works and it folds up to the size of the Palm. It attracts attention from everyone. I looked at other options and there really were none. This is the only device that allows me to enter lots of text into my Palm quickly and easily. I'm not a touch typist, but I can type so fast with this. The keys are like my IBM notebook, very high quality. It's really easy to move from my notebook to the Palm Portable Keyboard, but I hardly ever take my notebook with me on short trips anymore.
Rating: Summary: Very cool.....but you're on your own Review: First of all, let me say that I love my Palm Vx and when I got this keyboard as a gift I was thrilled. It is certainly cool looking and an attention getter. It's simple to unfold and typing on it feels very good, just like a normal keyboard. In fact, I would have given this 5 stars and rave reviews if it weren't for the problems I've had with it since a few weeks after I received it. Several of the keys don't work, or require me to push them several times before I can get them to work. The delete key doesn't work at all (this makes it hard to type!). Now, I understand that manufacturing problems happen and would have been happy to have it fixed/replaced under the warranty, but here is the problem. Palm Customer Support is non-existent. I have written them several emails, none of which have been responded to. I then sent them a letter, which has also gone unanswered. I would call them, but Palm has no toll-free customer support number! So you wait on hold on your own dime. If I don't get a response soon (it has been 2 months of writing), I will call them and demand a replacement, but it shouldn't have to be this way. So all I can say is -- great product, but just hope it doesn't break or you are SOL!
Rating: Summary: Love it! Review: After checking out the web sites trying to find out when this product would be available, it arrived! What a cool looking product! It comes in a neoprene case and has a metal look to it. What I like the most about the product is inputting addresses and emailing. If I would of had this product when I first bought the old Palm Pilot years ago, I would of saved hours. The only downside I see to the product is that it isn't a "durable" keyboard. You have to have it on a flat, hard surface to use (not on your lap). The W-fold doesn't lock once it is open, so make sure you keep it on a desk when you are using it and don't just pick it up with one hand like you can with your PC keyboard. If you type memos, email or travel with your Palm, buy this product!
Rating: Summary: Love it!! Review: I really like this item. I like it for school a lot. When I do my reports it is a very cool tool to have. The shortcuts are cool too.
Rating: Summary: I love this! Review: I have had my Palm for about 2 years and bought a keyboard when it was only a couple of months old. I took that one back because it was sold without software. I decided not to buy another one because I didn't want to have to run up to the computer store again. I'm a journalist, so I'm using my Palm daily now and am always having to pull up the keyboard on the screen. This get's a be a pain when I'm writing a list of interview questions or writing down who I talked to or emailed in a contact log. The keyboard took less than 5 minutes to install, pop in the CD and add the keyboard will be installed next time you sync your Palm with the PC. I was shocked that it really was that simple. When I finally have to replace my Palm, I'm definitely going to get another keyboard. This one saves me so much time.
Rating: Summary: Very satisfied Review: I am still a Palm Vx user and I just got the keyboard. It really makes data entry much more efficient. I can write my e-mails on my Palm now! Make sure you get a Palm brand keyboard, the imitations might not be so good as stated in other reviews. No problems with setup. The keyboard is very light as well. I would definitely recommend it. And I got it for a very very reasonable price from amazon.com merchant.
