Summary: Not a new mouse trap...but what a new mouse!
Review: This is the best mouse I have ever used. The pointer motion is amazingly smooth. The wheel has a lighter touch and scrolls smoothly. The thumb buttons are the best addition to a mouse since sliced bread. Mine are programed to go "back" and "forward" in IE...what a convenience! Good job Microsoft! This was a Christmas gift and I couldn't have ask for a better computer related gift.

Summary: A great optical mouse with some nice features
Review: The optical technology of this mouse does make it a real winner. This technology makes the mouse a lot more accurate and better able to track subtle movements. A real plus when used for any fine detail work such as graphics, and even some web browsing to get to the right point/link on an small image map. Plus you'll never have to worry about "mouse jump" as you try to point to a small object. I personally find the shape and size to be very comfortable, but I do have large hands. While kids are sure to find the red glow "cool," it is rather large for small hands and kids may have trouble manipulating it. However there is no easy answer (other than multiple mice with a Ymouse connector) to this dilemma since anything small enough to be comfortable to a little one, will surely be tiring to an adult's hand. Conversely, very young children still learning hand dexterity may have better luck with this since there is no mechanical mechanism and friction to contend with, and they will not become frustrated trying to point to a specific spot.

The use of the optical mechanism, vs a mechanical ball allows for its use on virtually any surface, and I already look forward to not ever having to clean a mouse ball again. The 5 buttons (4 + click down on the scroll wheel) are nicely programmable to handle a large variety of tasks to suit your needs (such a one click double-click, Back on your browser, show desktop (i.e. minimize all windows), and other functions) I do find the front small button a little more awkward to use, and therefore limit it to a function I use less often.

While the price may seem a bit high for a mouse, the ergonomic design, optical technology, and multiple programmable buttons make it worth it if you spend more than an hour or two a day using your computer, or do detail orientated work.

Lastly, the USB (universal serial bus) support is a big plus in the direction of a single computer connection (it does come with a PS/2 mouse connector adapter). The one thing that surprises me, with Bill Gates being a lefty, why no left handed version?

Summary: The only thing this mouse has going for it is it looks cool.
Review: I bought this mouse mainly because it looked cool......bad mistake....This mouse gets anoying..You cannot do acurate pointing with it because it is big and really light feeling.Don't buy this mouse. Its a waste of too much money and it just isnt as good as the average mouse..

Summary: OUCH MY HAND HURTS!
Review: Hi, I agree with the previous poster who said his hand hurt from using this mouse. The optical tracking seems to work pretty well. However, the shape makes my mouse click finger hurt. Also it feels light and flimsy. I am a big fan of the rollerball intellimouse in terms of feel (heavier), comfort, etc. This mouse feels "cheap" I guess. Came with a computer I ordered unfortunately. If I could put the optical tracking on and intellimouse I'd be all set.

Summary: Easy to use...if your hand is the size of an oven mitt!
Review: I was intrigued by this new mouse for a number of reasons. I liked the optical eye, and greater precision is an imperative, especially when working with/creating graphics--but this version of the new mouse is too cumbersome for those of us with small hands, and though I am left-handed, I learned mousing with my right hand, but occasionally do switch. This mouse won't allow me that versatility. I agree with the person who wrote that the 673-00248 (same technology, more traditional design) was a better choice, and that's the one I'm buying:)

Summary: What's wrong with left-handers
Review: I saw this item and was initially excited - I had at last found my husband's final Christmas gift. Then I saw the features and it is exclusivly for right handed people. Please be wary if you buy this and have any left handed people in your life that may use your computer - it will be very frustrating for them

Summary: Easy to use, quick, and low maintenance!
Review: The Intellimouse Explorer is the best mouse out there. I find that it is very accurate and it is a great feeling to have no mouse pad. I give mouse this a solid five stars.

Summary: Beware of this mouse!
Review: Within a week of using this mouse my hand was hurting. The longer shape is nowhere near as comfortable as the previous Microsoft mouse. The extra two buttons are nice but aren't in the best positions. I would recommend going with the other version of this mouse with the standard shape. I wound up having to take the cover off of my mouse to be able to use it. The laser works great though.

Summary: Forget Microsoft's Intellimouse: It got eaten by a Boomslang
Review: Anyone out there know what a Boomslang is? See: Boomslang, species of South African snake. Boomslangs live in trees and bushes. They are greenish to brown or black in color and grow to about 1.5 m (about 5 ft) long. The boomslang has a potent venom that it delivers through large, deeply grooved fangs that are located at the rear of the mouth. The bite of the boomslang can be fatal.. And this one has eaten the microsoft mouse. Whole. And spat out the bones. I noticed nowhere in any of the specs does Microsoft mention anything about the dpi rating on this mouse, but I HAVE tried them both. And the CLEAR winner is the Razor Boomslang 2000 (2000 dpi - Also in a 1000 dpi version), available at .Yes, the Boomslang IS a little pricier, but for gaming enthusiasts and for those of us who demand the best for their high-end systems, it's worth the difference. Imagine owning a Ferrari Testarosa and putting Brand-X-name discount tires on it. I think you get the picture.

Summary: It works, but...
Review: The new optical tracking mechanism in this mouse is nothing short of awsome. It will track on almost any surface short of a mirror. Dark, light, doesn't matter. Just needs a little texture or color variation.

But the shape is another matter. I find it akward to hold and don't like the flared-out base. It's tiring to lift and set down if you are accustomed to using your mouse in a confined area and need to reposition the mouse once you reach the bounds of your mousepad. It's also too large for small hands and the programmable buttons on the left side are too easy to accidentally trip. So don't buy this one for your kids.

I returned mine in exchange for the Microsoft 673-00248 IntelliMouse with IntelliEye (PS2/USB). Same outstanding optical tracking technology in the familiar and (to me) confortable IntelleMouse form factor. It has a heavier, more substantial feel to. And it's cheaper. If you can live without the programmable buttons, the 673-00248 is the 5-star choice.
