Summary: It takes getting used to, but well worth it
Review: This is the perfect travel-size mouse, small enough that on occasion I have even easily slipped it into my pocket. It has excellent precision, the buttons have a nice feel to them, and the scroll wheel is nicely stiff, not too loose like some other mice.

I have noticed three main complaints about this mouse from previous reviewers, so to clear some issues up:

First, this is a notebook mouse, meant for travelers. It is not a mouse intended for general purpose every-day use even with a laptop -- desktop mice are better for that. This is a mouse to take with you when you take your laptop somewhere other than its normal base or docking station. So when you are considering this mouse, be aware of this and do not compare its size to desktop mice; compare it to other notebook mice (all of which are just about the same exact size or perhaps even smaller, from what I've seen).

Second, you cannot hold this mouse like you would a regular desktop mouse. You have to simply guide it with your fingertips, like how you would guide the mouse on an iMac. Keep your thumbtip on the left side, your index finger on the left button, your middle finger on the right button, and your ring and pinky fingertips on the right side. Bringing along a travel wrist pad helps immensely with this but it is not necessary. Learn to keep your wrist high and your palm off the mouse and use your fingertips only, and you'll find that it is very easy and comfortable to use.

Finally, the cord is *not* too short. I have a large laptop (Inspiron 7500, about as big and heavy as a load of bricks), with the USB port in the upper left corner in the back, and I am right-handed. The cord easily goes around the back of my laptop to the right of it with plenty of room to spare.

If you have Windows 2000 or Windows XP, installation is a breeze. It should also work fine for any Linux or Mac users out there, if you're running recent versions of those OSes.

In short, if you're a traveler, this is the best traveler's mouse you can get, and at a decent price to boot.

Summary: Superb design
Review: This mouse easily installed on my Win 2000 and Win XP systems and is one of the most comfortable mice I've used even though it's compact. It gives you absolute control over movement and allows you to place your cursor anywhere on your screen with total precision.

I like the large wheel, which goes a long way towards making it comfortable to use for long periods (I am not sure why this is).

The software allows you to configure the mouse to suit personal needs, including response, cursor display and velocity.

Also, the mouse is visually attractive - I only wish there were a coordless version, which would have made this a dream mouse. The best thing I can say is that this mouse has made me a staunch Microsoft mouse fan (their operating systems and software are another story), and when it comes time to upgrade I hope there will be a cordless model available. In the meantime I'll be content to use the best mouse I've ever owned and highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a high quality, comfortable mouse for their laptop.

Summary: Great for what it's inteded for
Review: This mouse works great for what it is intended for...use with a portable notebook. Much better than trying to use the notebook pointers, pads etc. Yes, it's smaller, but that's why we bought it right? Only negative that I can think of is that you can't program the 'wheel' like other Intellimouses. I would like to program it to do the 'back' function, but can't seem to make that work. Other than that, it's been great and really doesn't take much time to get used to. The smaller size and shorter cord makes it very portable.

Summary: As an Optical Mouse: 3 stars; for ergonomical design: 1
Review: While an optical mouse can be of real help, especially for the mobile user, the form factor of this device makes a hard to use. Its small size results in a cramped hold and operation, thus causing more pain than necessary.

The space saved using this mouse as compared to the Microsoft Optical WheelMouse or the Microsoft Optical IntelliMouse is only marginal. Yet, either one of these alternatives provides the same advantages of optical, rather than mechanical, cursor control, while allow for a much easier handling due to the more appropriate form factor of the latter models.

Rather than designating this mouse for notebook users, Microsoft might be well advised to consider repositioning it as "Optical Kids Mouse", since its overall size and handling is quite favorable for younger users with smaller hands.
