Summary: About equal to a roller-ball mouse
Review: I was ecstatic when I finally bought my MX500. Optical! No more cleaning nasty rollers, no more mousepads, and pretty to boot! Unfortunately, I think I might have been better off with my old ball mouse.This isn't to say the MX500 totally .... It's a well-designed mouse, and the buttons are very, very useful. Ergonomically comfortable, also - I dig the little thumb shelf. And, well, it's optical so no ball to clean. Unfortunately the problems I've had with this mouse outweigh the benefits. First, the scroll wheel actually scrolls on the screen something like one out of every three scrolls, then shoots down the screen as though to catch up with itself. After being driven nuts for a few weeks, I've just stopped using the scroll wheel at all, and am instead relying on the "cruise-control" buttons, which work perfectly and do the same job. Another problem, which is really more like a personal peeve, is that the middle (scroll wheel) button cannot be programmed as "Refresh page." I have found in the past that having "forward," "back," and "refresh" all on the mouse makes life much easier, but it's not really necessary, I suppose. Now, my biggest problem with this mouse: it may not have a ball, but it thinks it does, and a dirty one at that. The tracking works well about 75% of the time, but the other 25%, I can move the mouse, say, three inches and have the pointer not move at all. This is why I say I might have been better off with a ball mouse - if a ball mouse does this, you clean the ball/rollers and you're back up and running. With the MX500, though, I have no such option - I just have to keep moving the mouse until it does decide to work. My overall evaluation: a well-designed mouse which could be infinitely useful if only the hardware worked as well as it was supposed to. Not worth the almost $... I paid for it when I could have gotten a roller ball mouse with similar performance for $... or less.

Summary: Mousewheels suck. This mouse does not.
Review: I'm a person who uses the middle mouse button extensively. Perhaps this is because I use Linux and play a lot of first-person shooters, but nevertheless I consider a good middle mouse button essential to my prolonged use of a mouse. This is also why I'm usually opposed to mousewheels -- all too often they interfere with the clicking motion, making the middle mouse button useless in games. So when I plugged the mouse in, I was suprised to find that those buttons on the left (by the thumb) are by default used the same as the middle mouse in Linux (and I assume other *nix). The added buttons for scrolling the mousewheel are a nice feature for when you don't grip the mouse full-on. The button in the middle underneath the "scroll down" button is not used in X, but there's no need for it anyway, and it's not in an obtrusive position. Oh, it's damn accurate too.

Summary: Great mouse, but buy it at Staples
Review: This mouse is one of the best mice I've ever used. Its very erogonomic, and all the buttons come in quite handy. I only wish I had gotten it at my local Staples store, because I could have paid just $28 (about $5 savings compared to amazon), and I would have been able to get the mouse immediately instead of having to wait 2 weeks for amazon to ship it.

Summary: Best Out there
Review: The technology is top of the line, it can process up to 40in/per second not that you will ever move that fast. It comes with a 3 year warrenty not that you will need it because its quality is amazing. Some people have trouble with the game if they use the logitech drivers. If you use them not all 8 bottons are programmable in games. Heres a simple solution, dont install the software, use the default drivers. You will be able to program all the bottons exept the window botton. Also, the window botton will not work if you use the default drivers but for all you gamers its worth it. This mouse is the best out there for gamming do to its glitch free reaction time, 8 programmable buttons, and great grip. If you have a ball mouse and dont know what kind of optical mouse to buy, or if you already have one, buy this mouse!

Summary: Solid mouse
Review: With the 9.75 driver, wheel and thumb button problems have been fixed. No more disabling EM_EXEC or checking "Use MS Office Compatible Scroll Only" and "Scoll in Active Window Only" to get the mouse wheel to work in games. In fact, those two options don't even appear in the mouseware. Thumb buttons do not need to be bound to other keys to work in games. With default settings, CS will detect the wheel as mouse 3, the backwards thumb button as mouse 4, and the forward thumb button as mouse 5. Even though there are 8 buttons, you can only get 5 to work in games. On the other hand, it's a blessing that the quick switch button doesn't work in games or else you might accidentally press it and cause your game to crash. The MX 500 also feels pretty solid compared to the MS Explorer 3.0. The mouse feet seem more durable than that of the Dual Optical (I have a Dual Optical with 3/5 feet missing). The two thumb buttons are well positioned. The right side of my thumb sits right on top of them just right so that I won't accidentally press them when I don't want to but are well within reach when I want to use them. The red light is also kinda nifty. It stays on the whole time and doesn't go into a low power mode when it is not being used (like earlier logitech mice) so it's easier to blind people with it :)

Summary: Can't beat this mouse!
Review: Why settle for any other mouse? With 8 buttons, the best optical technology out there, perfect design for grip, and great quality. This mouse puts anything else on the market to shame. If your a gamer like me then you MUST but this mouse even if you have an optical mouse already. The difference with Logitech's new MX technology is amazing. I thought I would never need another mouse but once I felt the smoothness and reaction time of the mx 500 I fell in love with it. If you go with the 300 or the 700 they're great to but with the 300 you dont get the 8 bottons and Im fine saving the money by avoiding the 700 because I'm fine having a cord. BOTTOM LINE: Buy this mouse as soon as possible, while its in stock.

Summary: The Tracking is great but....
Review: The tracking and ergonomic feel of the mouse is unbelievably amazing. However, if you plan on playing games with this mouse, the 8 buttons are not usable in any games. You can use only mouse 1, 2, and scroll up and down. I found this to be quite annoying that my two button and scroll wheel mouse could atleast use the press down of the scroll wheel in games, but the mx500 cannot. Other than that issue, its the best mouse out there for feel and tracking.

Review: I use my computer for work and play. I'm on the thing nearly every waking hour, and a good pointing device is absolutely critical for me. I've long been a fan of logitech's devices, having worn out two trackballs and a mouse in the past, with never a problem. I picked this MX500 up a week ago, and I couldn't be happier. Ergonomically this mouse is top notch. No matter how I hold this mouse it fits like it was made for me, the soft-feeling textured plastic (not rubber-coated like you may have heard) feels like pure quality, and the silver centerpiece has your fingers assuring the brain that this mouse is money well spent. The software is a breeze to set up, and the buttons (eight in total) are all nicely configurable. There are two buttons I never use, because I find I have to stretch to reach them. The front side (forward) button, and the rear center (app switch) button. It's true that other people don't have the same trouble I do. These buttons are never pressed by accident and there are six other buttons within comfortable reach, so this is less of a complaint and more of an extra feature I don't use. It never mis-tracks, and it never jumps around in any direction other than the ones I want it to. My scores in Unreal Tournament 2003 went up, and the additional sense of control is unexpected and welcomed. I find myself more confidantly whipping around my desktop too, the pointer is always where I want it. There is no finer mouse, and I've tried a lot of them. As a bonus, you can replace the red light with a blue one (void your warranty the day you buy it - I did!) and it still works great.

Summary: Probably the best there is--I have two!
Review: I've used many mice before, but this one is the best yet. The textures feel smooth and modern, if you will. There are lots of useful, programmable buttons. The "back" button near the thumb is invaluable when using a Web browser. I don't use the other buttons very often b/c I usually forget they're there. I'm really picky about mice, but I liked it so much, I got another one for my notebook. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
