Rating: Summary: There is a problem with using the keyboard and the mouse Review: Andy Reed stated below that he has had trouble with using the mouse while keys such as Shift or Option are held down. I can confirm that I've had this problem as well. However, it is intermittent. I first bought this keyboard and mouse maybe a year ago. They keyboard had this problem, then it went away. Then I had to send in the entire keyboard for another problem and they sent me a new one. But the new one does it as well. Every now and then it goes into this mode where the mouse won't respond while the shift key (etc.) is held down. It's occuring now to me. It happened this time after the batteries in the keyboard ran down and I replaced them. I've tried resynching the keyboard with no luck.
Anyway, looks like some users will have this problem, and others will be more lucky. But I have had 2 that have this problem.
*ADDED 10 MINUTES LATER* Just after posting my review, the batteries in the *mouse* died. When I replaced them, the shift key problem was gone! So maybe this is a solution: if you get this problem, try replacing the batteries in your mouse, even if the mouse appears to work otherwise.
If the problem can easily be solved like this (and it happens pretty rarely anyway), I would give this product 5 stars. I do love the scroll wheel. Get one - it'll change your life!
Rating: Summary: Perfect match for your Apple systems Review: At first glance you know you made the right choice in purchasing this keyboard/mouse combination. It fits very well into the astethics of all Apple systems. The plug-n-play is great, and downloading the most up to date software is a breeze on the Kensington website. All hotkeys work flawlessly with Mac programs, opening/controlling iTunes and Safari/Mail, and you even have the option to program 3 keys to your liking. The transmitter is also a battery charger and they give you 2 extra batteries so that you can switch them out with the mouse or keyboard when necessary, very nice option! The only downside, use caution when removing the orange warning sticker off the keyboard, it leaves a residue behind. I would recommend this product to anyone running an Apple system. Fits in well with my 12" PowerBook and 19" LCD monitor combination, and it allows the PB to sleep while running off the external montior, very cool to say the least. As a side note, Kensington support is top notch as well. I have owned several of their products and if any of them have any problems they will replace it and allow you to keep the original, instead of requiring you to have "down-time" sending it back to them. Also don't bother checking around, it ain't getting any cheaper then it is here! Great value, great product, great support, great looks.....what more do you need out of a purchase?!
Rating: Summary: Caveat emptor on this wireless device Review: Buyers please note: You will not be able to use both the keyboard AND mouse at the same time with this wireless system. For example, should you need to hold down the SHIFT key and drag (selecting multiple objects, constrained selection, etc.), you will not be able to do so. The following comes from a Kensington Support Rep: Dear Kensington Customer,The mouse and the keyboard communicate with a single receiver. When perfoming such functions both the devices send signals to the receiver. The receiver cannot identify the signals and send it back to both devices at a time. To avoid conflicts it is advisable to use one wireless device at a time rather than both at the same time. Regards, Kensington Technical Support. < END QUOTE> I found this to be a significant enough design flaw that I asked Amazon to take the product back as a return. Again, you will not be able to use the COMMAND, SHIFT, or other modifier keys in combination with mouse movements. If this is not a concern for you, then disregard.
Rating: Summary: No Problems and Great Product!!! Do your research for price Review: I've had my Kensington keybooard and mouse for about a week. I'm still getting used to it (the keyboard has more bounce to it than I'm used to), but so far I'm very pleased.
First: I expected to need to do lots of customization. None was necessary, though I could and did assign URLs (or app launches) to two keys on the left side of the keyboard. Two assignable keys didn't sound like much, but the keyboard already has built-in buttons for mail (which launched Apple Mail with no setup), the calculator, Web keys, and more multimedia controls than I'd have hoped for. I'm surprised by how much I like the scroll thingie on the left side of the keyboard; I've used it far more than I expected.
Being wireless is all I'd hoped for. Because my Mac sits on the floor next to my desk, I had to use extension cables and ended up with paper piled on top of wires. This really does give me a great deal of freedom.
Unlike another reviewer, I have had no problems with key/mouse combinations such as Option-click. My nitpicking is different. The Kensington keyboard is fatter (i.e. taller) than my original Apple keyboard, so my short hands have to stretch a bit more. And I'm going to have to find the system preferences to deal with this bounce! Those are personal adjustments, though, and the benefits to my new setupp make them worth the effort.
Rating: Summary: An incredible keyboard for Macs Review: This is truly a phenomenal keyboard and mouse. Being wireless is absolutely beautiful, the receiver charging the batteries and running off a USB port is nothing short of brilliant, and the hot keys are a joy to use.
A previous review stated that you cannot use the keyboard and mouse simultaneously, which is ridiculous. I have had no problems doing shift clicks or any other type of procedure in which keyboard and mouse are communicating at the same time.
The drivers for the mouse are excellent; just about everything imaginable is configurable, and you can even have different configurations for different programs (which can be extremely useful). My only complaint with the mouse is that it is slightly smaller than I like; I had an old Microsoft Intellimouse that I loved because it fit my hand so well. This mouse isn't bad, it's just a little small for me. Definitely stylish, though.
My major irk with the whole device is that you can't configure most of the hot keys (and the internet hot keys don't work with Firefox, only Safari or IE). The iTunes keys and such work beautifully, though, making it well worth it for me. I originally had some trouble with the home page that the WWW hot key would open, but figured out that it was set in the Internet System Preference Pane (under the Web tab).
This keyboard is much quieter and easier to use than the standard Apple keyboards, and with all its extra features it's an absolute steal. I highly recommend this keyboard to anyone who wants to go wireless with style.
