Rating: Summary: Beware.. this is NOT coming with Dragon software Review: After hours of research for buying a digital voice recorder with voice to print for my lectures at school, I found out only Sony offers so far. But beware, this IST10 doesn't come with Dragon Naturally Speaking software (as one reviewer mentioned as I've the same purpose as him) but compactable with it. You have to choose either ICD-ST10VTP ($50 more)or ICD-MS515VTP to get Dragon preferred 7 software, otherwise, purchase software seperately. Bundle package is cheaper than purchase software separately. Good luck for your research!
Rating: Summary: Works for capturing lectures Review: I bought the ICD-ST10 strictly for recording university lectures. So far it has worked out great. The sound quality is very good and I can always upload the recordings onto the computer and transcribe them while listening to the lecture again (and again) through computer speakers. I wouldn't recommend doing it directly from the recorder. Speakers provide a lot better sound quality. Ability to slow down the playback definitely helps (if you can deal with the hypnotic effect of a geology lecture being played back at half speed. You are getting sleepy... Very sleepy...) I am able to fit only one lecture (1.5 hours) before I have to transfer the file onto the computer (I record in SP mode). More memory & a power cord (has a power plug but cord is not provided with the recorder) would definitely make this a 5 star product. Con: There is no OFF button on the recorder and in the month I've owned it, it has turned itself on during the worst moments (like taking an exam in a hushed lecture hall).
Rating: Summary: Well designed, very compact - could use more memory .. Review: I bought this for recording night school classes while asleep - it is very well designed - has a bigger display than the more expensive SONY MS515. This unit is very-very light weight - therefore, it is very unobtrusive in your shirt pocket. The MIC can be rotated depending where the unit willbe when in use - I used it in my shirt pocket with the MIC rotated forward. The ERGONOMICS are excellent - you can turn it on, pause & off by feel by the ergonomic buttons - IE I never take it out in class. In long play mode the sound was adequate - far better than my olympus L400 microcassette recorder ( which used to be the benchmark in smallness & long play )The volume is excellent on playback - quite loud for such a small device. The SONY audio editing & management software for the PC is excllent, the USB interface download multihour recordings in seconds. HERE are the numbers: STEREO record: 41 mins; STANDARD HIGH RES RECORD:125mins; LONG PLAY RECORD: 334mins. If you sit between the middle to the front of an auditorium, the LP MODE is absolutely fine. You wont find a better recorder in this price range in my opinion. I almost bought the little olympus DW-90 ( 90 min )- but my classes are almost two hours long - plus this has better sound quality with the novel SONY CODEC. I RATED IT 4 STARS BECAUSE FOR MY USES - IT COULD USE MORE MEMORY & AN EXTERNAL MIC INPUT
Rating: Summary: My voice ==> typed text!! Review: I bought this unit refurbished for about $75. It did exactly what I wanted it to do. I can now dictate into the unit, then hook it up via usb to my computer and have Dragon Naturally Speaking Version7 Professional turn my voice into typed text.A word of caution about Dragon Naturally speaking; it takes about 10 hours over two weeks to get productive with high accuracy in Dragon. I read books, went to talks, and took training for Dragon. Dragon Naturallyspeaking dosn't work right out of the box -- you and Dragon need training to get along. I found the Dragon training cd's from Say I Can very helpful. Once you've mastered the Dragon, you will only need to touch the keyboard and mouse a few times a day while using your computer -- you'll be moving around and typing into most applications with your voice. I'm using Dragon with various versions of Windows, not sure how it works on the Mac.
Rating: Summary: Great little device Review: I got this to record sounds and to things that our kids say, and I think it's great, so far. The product design is really well done and intuitive, the recording quality is terrific and playback is also surprisingly good. The software for playing files converting to other audio formats is also well done, although the editing capability could be better. I looked at a bunch of these things. Stay away from the Ripflash stuff for any kind of voice recording. Terrible product design and tough to use.
Rating: Summary: Wanted to add more stars ;-p Review: I just wanted to add more stars for my use of this recorder. I intended to use it only for my lectures at first but I couldn't use Dragon software for the professors' voices. How can they give me sample voices to train that software??? I bought "bundle" to get that software. I usually have 3 classes per day so I could use only LP mode and found out that using external mic is much better than the built-in mic from recorder. Later, I converted old songs from tapes (otherwise, they're going to die soon) by ST mode. I bought audio cable from RadioShack with ~$8 and connected between recorder and cassette player. I could listen with earphone or external speakers while recording (to cut off between songs). The sound quality was awsome even from old tapes! I even converted them into MP3 format but you'll need to save in high quality wav file format. Sometimes, I converted them into WMA format with MS Plus!. I could listen old songs from tapes with a MP3 player. It will be a nice gift for my father on Fathers' Day. Of course, it took time and required a lot of hard drive space and CDs but for me, worth it! I wish Sony should have bigger memory size for longer ST and SP modes, not just LP.
Rating: Summary: Great little device Review: My unit DID come with Dragon software but I haven't taken the time to loadit yet. I am using this to record sound clips from my kids to preserve forever on the computer. Also- I direct a choir and use it to record them. But most importantly- this unit allows me to record rehearsal clips for all the choir parts for me to easily burn to CD. The sound quality is pretty good - except it does not give full dynamic playback quality through the units small speaker - but I imaging hooking it up to a stereo would do wonders. The biggest suprise of all was how SMALL this is. The only negative I have experienced is when you put the unit into its leather case- it is easy to accidently press a button and playing back stuff when you don't want it to.

Rating: Summary: Great recorder, lousy warranty Review: While my recorder worked I loved it. My wife bought it for me as a gift since I was always jotting notes on paper and losing them. This recorder was great for clipping to my shirt pocket and pulling out when I wanted to make a note of something to do. That is right up until one day the record feature stopped working. I had only had it three months. When my wife called the company they said it would cost $60 to just take a look at it. This did not include any additional labor cost or shipping. Parts were covered since it was less than a year, gee thanks. Why isn't labor covered. Could it be Sony is contracting out so much to cheap labor in third world countries that are not doing the quality work? I think so. I have seen numerous complaints like mine that indicate they are not about quality and certainly not concerned about customer service.
