Summary: Quality depends on function
Review: Bought this for my morning walking commute to work. Tape and radio work well, but the headset died almost immediately. Replaced it and can hear better, but the TV band is almost inaudible. Too bad because otherwise, it's a very versatile product.

Summary: Great product for the price.
Review: I beg to differ! For 30 bucks, this walkman is excellent. The sound is clear. The reception is generally good. The bass boost is strong. Ok, it doesn't do a playback but if you're willing to pay...more you can get that feature. It radio turns on by itself? Geez! Guys, learn to use the hold button. (Although I have to admit I forgot to put it on hold once in a while. Shame on me.) The TV band goes from Channel 2 to 13. Sure it doesn't have all of your local stations but what you do get are just as clear as what your TV gets. The FM reception is just as good as my shelf stereo. This walkman comes with a plastic case with belt clip that works well. If you take it for a jogging, though, you may have to stop to flip over the tape. Like I said earlier, if you spend a few more bucks, you will get the auto-reverse feature. This walkman doesn't particularly hawk the batteries compared to all walkmans I used to own. It said 32 hours play time on the package and it seems like it's not that far off. I haven't drop-test it yet so I can't tell you if it can hold up well to kluzy owners.

Unless you are a free sweater, the cheap plastic case that comes with this walkman provides enough protection against moisture to take it to the gym with you. It weighs a lot less than the comparable feature sport walkman. If you can do without the unnecessary weather-proof protection (even so, you still can't submerge it in the water) you will have a few bucks more in your pocket and half a pound less in your hand.

A good purchase for the money!

Summary: lousy walkman
Review: I bought this product a few weeks ago and trusted that it would be quality, since it is from Sony. Instead, I was very disappointed. The buttons for the tuner (AM, FM, and TV) are so touch sensitive that when placed in my coat pocket, the FM station would switch to TV or AM. The tape player needed to be played on the highest volume (on fresh batteries) just to hear anything.

Not recommended.

Summary: Eats batteries like no tommorow.
Review: I do not recommend this walkman, I have it and batteries only last a couple of weeks and that is when I bairly use it maybe 10 minutes every other day or something and this is using good duracell batteries. Cheaper batteries only last about a week.

Summary: Great Walkman
Review: I don't know what these people are talking about. I got this walkman 6 months ago. It still works great, the Nimh rechareable batteries I use last 3 days before I have to recharge (that's about 24 hours of use in my case). And the radio reception is great in my area. I have travelled with this walkman and it works great getting radio signals. I was amazed at how long the tape player lasted. It is a wonderfully light weight walkman and is a great buy. I suggest it if you dont want to pay for an MP3 player.

Summary: bad walkman
Review: I have owned three of these because the battery life is good and I was interested in the TV feature. However, the part connecting the unit to the headphones (the green colored connector) is defective. My most recent purchase lasted only 5 months with hardly any use and no outdoor use! I contacted the company as it was under warranty and the "repair" would have cost more than a new unit. I am very disappointed with both Sony and this unit. I have the impression that their portable product quality has diminished over the years. For example, I have a ten year old portable CD unit that is still going strong. It's too bad, but I won't purchase any more Sony portable products.

Summary: Good value for the price
Review: I paid [money amount] at [local store], after having no luck at a couple of other "discount" chains finding a cassette/radio Walkman at all - far bigger market for CD & MP3 players, apparently. I was looking for a low-priced, lightweight AM-FM Walkman with a tape player to use while I walk. After buying it I realized that I should have checked Amazon for pricing, features & reviews as I usually do. And today, it turned up as a Gold Box item so I would have even saved a bit more.

I've used the tape player very little; I usually listen to public radio while walking (except during pledge periods! I already contribute) and have had no tuning problems. I do use the "hold" button while walking and also when I turn if off.

Battery life hasn't been tested yet. I've used it an hour or more at a time, 4 or 5 times a week, since May - maybe the batteries are on the verge of failing at this point.

I have had no luck tuning the weather bands but didn't buy it for that. The lack of auto-reverse for tapes or provision for an AC adapter are minor annoyances and fairly irrelevant for my purposes.

For the price, I'm happy, though if I start using the tape player more & it fails, I'll probably be beyond the Sony warranty period. Also, the headphones are about what one should expect for this price (I haven't yet tried my Bose noise-cancelling headphones - I don't use them while walking).

Summary: Good value for the price
Review: I was looking for something basic to use around the house. No fancy bells and whistles, no sports abuse. Just wanted to play tapes privately when at home. Didn't want junk so I paid extra for the name brand. (I paid retail at the store)

When I bought this model, the tape mechanism stopped working completely within less than 7 days. Exchanged at retailer for a new unit. Tape mechanism has not completely stopped working (yet), but within 30 days tapes began playing in supper slow motion. More so near the midway point of my 90min cassettes than at beginning or end. It takes around 1 1/2 hours to listen to a 40min audiobook (ie the tape motor doesn't have enough strength to play a brand new tape even with new batteries in the unit).

Moral of the story: You can't always trust a name brand. But you can trust my (experienced) opinion of this unit. This thing is a piece of junk! I say pass on and try your luck with one of the other models or brands.
