Summary: Should plug and play, doesn't.
Review: Don't take my word for it, go to the Viking web site and see the number of folks who are not getting the results they expected from the user's manual (which I must admit is over-simplified to a fare-thee-well). I plugged the darling into my iMac G4, fully expecting to do a little tinkering, but found out after a lot of trial and error, a misleading interview with a tech support guy, and an exhaustive search of said web site that it doesn't work with OS 9.1, let alone OS X. Such a pity, because the idead is sound. If anyone knows of a rival product that does the job, post it please.

Summary: Works with Windows 95B!
Review: Not too many cool digital accessories work with my ancient 200 MHz Windows 95B machine. When I got a digital camera, I bought this because I do not have a firewire port, and it was my only hope. After downloading the service patch to activate my USB ports (yes, my computer is that old), I was able to setup the card reader to my old clunker without a hitch! Even if I had a firewire port, just slipping my card into the reader is just as easy as hooking up my camera would be. As an added bonus, the card reader comes with an adapter so that I can slip my 128 MB card right into my work laptop. Absolutely great for transferring files back and forth to work. The only glitch I have run into is that my computer sometimes fails to "see" the card reader. Simply unplugging and re-plugging the card reader from the USB port fixes this immediately. Highly recommended. WARNING: I actually bought my unit in 1991. I see a review dated 4/16/02 that says Viking changed the firmware and the product is no longer compatible with Windows 95.

Review: This thing allows you a grat deal of versatility. especially if you have a Compact Flash Digital Camera A laptop with a PCI card slot and a desktop computer. you can use it much like a zip drive. USB makes easy installation there are driver updates you can get at the viking website if you are running WIN 98

Summary: Beware the Blue Screen of Death
Review: When it works, it works flawlessly. When it doesn't... well, let's say it isn't very pretty. Rebooting with the card reader plugged into the USB port on a Win2000 box will consistently lead to a Blue Screen of death. Reader has to be plugged in AFTER Windows boots which is a drag. Not bad overall, but there has to be better out there.

Summary: Fastest Way to Upload Photos & Download MP3s
Review: I bought this for a trip to Alaska & absolutely loved it. Installation was a snap. It handles the compact flash media for my MP3 player just fine (but format the CF on your MP3 player FIRST!) as well as the Smart Media card for my camera. File transfers were rapid--far faster than the USB transfer from my Nikon. The process of taking pictures, transfering to my PC, and then burning a CD ROM was greatly simplified by this handy tool. I can't believe I waited so long to buy one!

Summary: Don't try it with Windows XP!
Review: I found that this product worked exceptionally well with Windows 98. However, when I upgraded to Windows XP, I could not install it even though Viking has an XP download for it (Intelliflash_XP). I contacted Viking and was told that my computer needed upgrading by th manufacturer. (No such upgrade exists). I think that I'll have to buy another unit. I won't be Viking!

Summary: Worked great with Windows 98 but will NOT work with XP!
Review: I had an older Pentium II 400 running Windows 98 when I bought this item. It worked great and I would have rated it 5 stars. However, I recently purchased a new top-of-the-line Pentium 4 from Dell (awesome by the way), which was of course loaded with Windows XP. I have since wasted countless hours trying to get this drive to work under XP. My system will simply not recognize the drivers -- even the newest XP driver downloaded from Viking's website. All of my other hardware peripherals connected beautifully under XP. After spending time on the phone with Viking support, I was more frustrated than ever. There are much better (and cheaper) alternatives at your local Best Buy or Circuit City. I bought a SimpleTech CF reader for $[money] at Circuit City that works beautifully with XP. Go in another direction!

Summary: Does NOT Work With Windows 95
Review: While the reader may work great with other operating systems, I have to give it a one-star rating for it's misleading marketing. Potential purchasers should be warned that the device may differ in significant respects from the description on the package.... When I couldn't get this easy, "plug and play" device to install I called Viking Technical Support and learned that, as a result of a "firm wire upgrade" (intended to enhance compatibility with other MS operating systems), the product is no longer compatible with Windows 95. Unfortunately, ...the product description on the ...packaging the reader comes in have been changed to reflect the fact that the device as currently manufactured will no longer work with Windows 95. According to the technical support person I spoke with, the reader's lack of compatibility with Windows 95 is apparently well-known at Viking. It would have saved me a lot of time if someone at Viking had bothered to modify their marketing materials to reflect that fact!

Summary: Fast, Reliable and very Portable.
Review: I bought this initially to transfer pictures taken from a digital camera to the PC, but I have found an excellent use with my Pocket PC, an HP Jornada 568: if you own one, you will know that if you need to synchronise large files or a considerable amount of data to the Pocket it can take a long time even with a USB cradle (in fact, it can take an eternity if you are in a rush). And then, you must move everything to the CompactFlash card in order to save space; but, what if the files are too much big, or is a number of them that you cannot synchronise at once? Two or more synch's? That could turn into a real problem.
But not with this Intelliflash Reader: just put your Compact Flash Card into the adapter, push it into the device and fill your card in least than one minute with everything you will need. The reader can write to the card too (the same way you do it with a Floppy or a DirectCD, just drag and drop) in a very fast way, is very reliable and extremely easy to connect to your computer, only follow the on screen instructions and in 40 seconds your Reader will be in function.
And if you need to take it with you, you will not hesitate about it because the device is little and very portable.
Well made and simple, this Reader is an excellent choice if you work very often with CF cards or the others compatibles types. It is worth the price.

Summary: A Relief from Slow Serial Port Downloads
Review: I used to download my photos from my Olympus digital camera through a serial port connection, which was excruciatingly slow. With this Viking IntelliFlash Reader (which I received as a gift), downloads are a snap. All I have to do is take out the SmartMedia card from my camera and put it in the lower media slot of the Viking, and voila!, I can just move the folder from the SmartMedia card to my hard drive just like that. I strongly recommend getting one of these if you take a lot of digital pictures, whether you have a camera that uses SmartMedia or CompactFlash.
