Summary: One star is too much
Review: First of all you must select an adequate tool for opening the plastic package-- i.e., jack-hammer, cutting torch, bolt cutter, etc. After extracting it I found a very small operation/installation manual which appears to be roughly translated from Hungarian. I shut down all applications including Norton's Anti-Virus and then put the Installation CD in the tray and closed the door. Upon following the installation directions with great care (4 times) and working around the warning messages my Windows XP system displayed I finally got to the point where the last window told me to remove all disks from drives and click on the 'Finish' button. I did, with expectations of finding a new drive icon displayed in the 'My Computer' screen as the manual said should happen. No such luck. But I did then plug the thing in (you are warned not to plug it in untill the driver is installed) and a pretty little green light came on and the computer made a couple of clunking noises like it does when the camera is hooked up to the USB port; but alas, no icon and no reading of the memory card. I am told that a crazy person will carefully and repeatedly perform a series of identical steps and then be surprised by identical outcomes. That is what this device caused me to do.

I shall now proceed to the next level of frustration which I expect to result when I try to get Office Depot to take this item back.

One nice thing about it which may justify awarding it that single star is that the uninstall program included on the CD works perfectly.

Summary: Works sometimes
Review: From what I understand of these types of hardware, they are created in batch by varying hardware component manufacturers and the resold to vendors (e.g. Simpletech) who combine them into the nice products we buy for distribution.

Unfortunately SimpleTech doesn't quite get things right. The driver installation for this product went smoothly on Windows XP. It was a matter of clicking the mouse a few times, a reboot, and plugging in the device into a USB slot.

However, what followed afterwards and for succeeding attempts at getting the thing to be recognized by your PC would be what I call my own form of digital gambling. Some days the device works when I plug it in, and some days it doesn't. The odds are usually not in my favor.

I would have much preferred a more expensive item that worked all the time.

Summary: Nifty Gadget
Review: I couldn't imagine why I've been dealing with those big Zip100/250 Disks or having several 1.44MB Floppies, how about CDR/W which takes forever to write and could get scratched up. After checking out SimpleTech's CompactFlash SmartMedia Combo Reader, I've been able to just put the CompactFlash Card or SmartMedia cards in my pocket without fear of losing any data, scratching up the surface or corrupting any of the files. I basically use it for downloading stuff on the 1GB CompactFlash Card that I also own, which is equal to multiples of ZIP100 or ZIP250.

Summary: It is a reader/writer
Review: I had two computers, windows 2000 and windows XP. Windows XP recognized the device immediately, but windows 2000 took me 3 hours to download SP3 to upgrade my system( follow the instruction on the manual). It works on windows 2000, too.

The best thing about this product is that it is also a writer. You can use it as an USB drive with your CF/SM card in. I use it to transfer large files between my two computers, instead of a floppy or USB pen drive( which I planned to buy, but not any more).

BTW, its speed is USB 1.1, not USB 2.0. Though it is fast enough, it is better if it is USB2.0.

Review: I have a Canon PowerShot S330 digital camera and before I bought a Simple tech smart media reader it took for ever forever (at least it seem like that) to get my pics transferred to my pc. I highly recommend this particular Smart Media combo reader from Simple tech and you can't beat the price. What more can you ask for in a reader.

Review: I have a digital camera and it used to take so long just to get my pictures transferred to my computer. Since I got the FlashLink reader, I just slip my compact flash card out of the digital camera, plug it into my reader, and download... fast! Very cool!

Review: I have an older digital camera that takes a compactflash card, but the new one I want to get uses smartmedia. What to do? No problem, I got the new camera and this Flashlink reader so I can use both cards and both cameras!

Review: I have two Digicams... one for me and one for my son. Each take different memory cards. This little unit reads them both.

There was virtually no set-up. I plugged it into my XP computer and it detected new hardware. That was IT! Now I have two more "drives" that show up in my Explorer window and I can read and delete just like any other drive. VERY COOL and VERY worth the money. Saves on having to use my camera battery to upload the pictures... and WAY faster!

Get one!!!

Oh ya... I would have given it 5 stars, but it has a short cord... what's up with that? My CPU is on the floor and the short cord won't let it reach my desktop ... but I just put it on top of the CPU instead.
