Summary: A USB2.0 model is out!
Review: ...Just some info to let potential buyers know that a newer model is released: LEXAR MEDIA (RW018) Multi-Card Reader, this is USB2.0 and xD card compatible, along with the typical CompactFlash, SmartMedia, SecureDigital, etc...Model RW017 is based on USB1.1, if that's the only type of ports you have then it'll do.

Summary: Partially Dead on Arrival
Review: I am sure this is a good product, but the one I brought did not work properly. It could read and write Compact Flash and Smart Media cards, but when I inserted a Memory Stick or a Secure Digital card I was always prompted to insert a disc in the drive. That is, it did not recognize the latter formats. This must be a sample defect, but it was disappointing and I returned the drive.

Summary: It does exactly what it's suposed to
Review: I bought this card reader as a replacement for another one, which is no longer compatible with windows xp. This card reader is extremely easy to set up. With xp, all you need to do is plug it in. With windows 98, you just need to install the drivers and then plug it in. Setup takes mayber five minutes. I have only a few complaints. For some reason, it creates a new directory for each slot, four in all. It is kind of odd, and it takes a while to figure out which new drive name goes with each slot. Another thing which worries me is the piece of plastic seperating the slots for SD cards and memory stick cards from the smart media card slot is extremely thin. I keep worrying im going to break it off. Another oddity of this drive is its two part usb cord. A small, two inch long cord comes off of the drive. It then plugs into a longer usb cord. While i can see the advantages of this system since the small piece folds up into the reader, it is just a bit weird. Other than these gripes, it is a very solid piece of equipment, which performs exactly as specified.

Summary: No need for multiple card readers for different card types
Review: I wasn't looking for a card reader, but I happened to read about it in one of the [URL] newsletters. I have a CompactFlash card for my digital camera and an SD Card for my PDA. One is bigger than the other and this card reader reads both quickly and accurately. From now on, I'm going to load digital photos from the camera through the reader instead of through the camera's USB cable. Grabbing the photos through card reader is faster than through the camera and PDA. The USB port can be hidden away in the reader's side compartment for portability. A extension USB cord comes with the reader so you won't be stuck with in-built short cord especially when working on a desktop. The reader itself is a little larger than the size of a business card holder length and width-wise and about twice as thick. It's easy for women to carry in their purses, men to carry in a shirt or jacket pocket, and laptop carriers to put in the case without adding to the load. Only complaint -- and it's probably a Windows issue not the reader -- is that when I plug it in, it shows five additional portable drives. I have to click on each until I find which is being used. The CompactFlash card was on a different drive from the SD Card. Maybe the drives are set up by media type. There is a picture of this reader at:

Summary: Simple, Fast, Reliable Media Reader
Review: I've been using Lexar Media products for years. I bought SmartMedia memory and a little diskette PC interface years ago from Lexar directly. I used it reliably for 4 years to transfer pictures from my digital camera to my PC via the diskette reader. Six months ago I bought the RW017 to upload photos from my Secure Digital Cards and upload/download data/pictures to my Clie memory stick. This small green USB-connected unit is a charm. The cable is very secure and has a very usefull connector just outside the reader box. Smart design! The included software install created multiple drives on my PC for each media type it supports. This is a bit strange but has caused me no problems other than when I go to copy data from one of the reader drives I have to hunt down the list of "removable drives" in Windows Explorer to find the one that has my memory in it. No big deal. I've used with my Compaq notebook [Win XP Home] as well as my Gateway desktop [Win 2000 Pro] with no problems.

Summary: Works like a dandy
Review: I've been using this for about an week with absolutely no problems. On Windows XP (home edition) it was totally plug-and-play. It also works perfectly with the Windows XP photo import wizard. Very convenient. I am deducting one star because the reader shows up as FOUR drive (G: H: I: J: on my computer.) This is needlessly confusing. Since most of us are going to use just one card at a time, why four drives? One would surely do the job. (If I could deduct just half a star, I would since this isn't a huge issue.)

It is about 3 inches long, 2 inches wide and 2mm high. I use it only for reading CF card. I like the description of each drive that shows up in My Computer for each of the drives in this reader. There is an accompanying small program that stays in memory to do that. One thing I have to mention is that this reader has problems reading the CF card that came with my Canon digital camera. I think canon's CF card is slightly off-standard. Inserting the canon card will freeze the reader. If the reader is disconnected from the USB port and re-inserted, it becomes okay. Hopefully, a later version of driver will take care of this issue with canon cards.

Summary: Works great
Review: Works great under Windows XP professional. This device creates it own virtual drives based on which type of card you place into the unit. Example: smart media card will create an E:\ drive, Compaq Flash will create an F:\ drive...etc.... The device creates 4 drives on your computer regardless of whether or not you have a card in any of the bays. This might create a problem if you are attached to a network with a lot of mapped drives. Other than that, it works SUPER, and the price is pretty good too.
