It features solid state IC memory with no moving parts, and uses copyright protection for legal downloading of music from the Internet. It's the first recording media to comply with the music industry's SDMI (Secure Digital Music Initiative), and has the potential to spark an increase in the quantity and quality of music available for downloading, because content providers will know their offerings are secure in the players of the people who download them. Storing up to 240 minutes of music, MagicGate Memory Stick media can also be used with other compatible Memory Stick devices such as digital still cameras, camcorders, PCs, and voice recorders. MagicGate is copyright-protection technology that consists of authentication technology and encryption technology. Authentication ensures that protected content is transferred only between compliant devices and media, and that protected content is recorded and transferred in an encrypted format to prevent unauthorized copying or playback.
