Summary: Viking: The generic RAM chipsets... BEWARE
Review: I'm an advanced computer user. I've been repairing PC's for friends for several years now. I needed a RAM upgrade for my own PC so I took a look at Viking.

The prices are GREAT, but the old saying applies here: "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR". The chipset must have been a fraction of an inch overcut. One brackett locked & the other tried to lock but because the chipset was slightly overcut, it would not lock. Obviously these chipsets are NOT TESTED before they are ready for shipping. This in my opinion is a NECESSITY.

I took a VERY BIG risk starting my conputer with the second brackett not locked in the slot. NOTHING HAPPENED, WINDOWS DID NOT EVEN START. I got VERY LUCKY, because if a RAM chipset is incorrectly sitting in the slot it could really mess up your motherboard. I took the chipset out, and restarted. Everything was fine again with my SLOW 32MB RAM.


I guess I'll have to go out and pay the $... that almost EVERY retail computer store charges for a 128MB RAM upgrade for an IBM Aptiva.

Review: The price is GREAT. I've been looking for one of these for two years, but wouldn't pay $ for the IBM part. No matter where I shopped, the price was $ minimum. This Viking 128MB RAM chipset DOES NOT fit correctly into the slot. I've been fixing home PC's as a hobby, so I know what I'm doing here. This would have been an oddball total RAM combination (if it caused a problem, all I'd have to do was replace the 32MB chipset with the 128MB one) besides IT WON'T FIT ANYWAY! It's the right part, but it seems as if it was very slightly miscut on the left end wedge where the bracket goes in to lock (by less than a millimeter).

I took the risk of starting my computer with it not locked on the one side. I figured since it was pushed in as far as it would possibly go, it may work. I hit the start button on the tower after everything was put back and the computer would not go on. It apparently could not get past the RAM during start-up.


I WAS VERY LUCKY THAT THIS DID NOT CAUSE ANY DAMAGE TO MY SYSTEM. I removed the chipset, and had to restart twice- but I'm safely back to my 32MB RAM. :(
