Hercules 3D Prophet II GTS 64 MB Pro

Review: I bought this (..product..) a couple months after the Geforce2 GTS was out, before the Ultra and GeForce 3's.

I must say, it's giving a bit of life to my gradually aging P2-400Mhz computer. Just got Return to Castle Wolf. I have the settings on HIGH on everything. Not a single stutter except at the start of a level. No lag. Nothing. Looks very awesome using the MadOnion 3DMark2001. Shame only the GF3 supports all the features in that version of the software.

I dunno if it's my computer, my 2X DVD-Rom or the software... but the DVD software that comes with the card is pretty picky on working properly. Here's my problem : I pop the DVD in, start the movie at full screen. Yeah... cool! Then all of a sudden, the video begins to lag behind, making the movie experience suffer like I'm watching a slide show. If I phenagle with it a bit, I can get it running without the stutter.

I would have liked to seen the video out feature changed though. I tried recording onto my VCR through the Video-Out port on the card. I had to go into my Display settings and select the video out portion. Why? Why not just have the port working already so what I see on my monitor is what I see on the TV screen hooked to the VCR? Made recording my game-play and computer animated movies very cumbersome. Setting the video display at 800x600 left some black boxes on the edges of the TV screen and I couldn't stretch the screen size to fit the TV correctly on my computer. Trying to work at 640x480 for the desktop size on the TV-out was pretty blurry and hard to read all the icons I had. I'm sorry, I like detail. The TV-Out resolution didn't give me enough detail.

I like the fact that it has an output for those new Flat screen monitors too. But I don't think I'm going to pay for a monitor that's the same size as my current one, but costs about another $500 more? I guess if you're into having a flat screen, all the power to you my friend.

But basically, this card is supposed to be a gaming-related graphics card. Sure it'll rock at doing 2D photo editing stuff and creation too. But it wasn't all that great on the DVD playback software.

If I had as much money as I wanted, I'd get one of the GeForce3's. If you're looking for almost all of the same features and not so expensive, this is the card to get. Though that's also why it's getting 3 stars. because the card is worth (..current Amazon.com pricing) and the DVD software playback on my computer was very troublesome. This card should at least be $50 cheaper (...) now.

It's one I'm sticking with once I upgrade my computer to the latest 1Ghz+ speeds. Maybe then the DVD software playback problem will clear up.

Review: The Hercules 3D prophet GTS II pro is a great buy if you dont feel like spending $500 on a video card. This card features 64mb DDR and great 3D and 2D boost for video games and DVD decoding that is amazing. This card has NVIDIA'S GeForce2 chipset that delivers 350mhz of power, more than enough to handle any video game or movie you can throw at it. Believe me there is verry little diffrence between this card and the Hercules Ultra (except about $150 dollars). If your looking for a video card that can do a hole lot, for a not too shabby price CHOOSE THIS CARD! But ill warn you make sure your computer meets the system requirements, or youll be struggling. This card was a breez to install, of course it needed a little fine tuning but that was pretty easy too, and thanks the outstanding customer support that Hercuels offers I was running smooth as silk in no time with graphics that are just out of this world, and dvd playback that looks awsome. I recomend shopping around though, you could just find this card for under $290(like I did buying white box factory direct). So if you dont feel like dishing out big bucks for an ultra card this card is just as good, visit the hercules web site and compare the tech specs, you'll see the diffrence lies mostly in the price. This card is a great buy, easy install, and verry stable!
