Summary: It is awesome
Review: This model is excellent. Everything that everyone else has said has been false. It is pretty shock absorbant, so you can run with it if you want to. Also, it's headphones are average quality. They aren't the best, but they are effective. If you are annoted by the headphones sent with the product, you can always pull out around 10 dollars and buy a better pair. Yes, I will admit that this is larger then most Mp3 players, however, it is not that large (a little larger than an Ipod). It has excellent battery life (around 16 hours on a full charge) and is easy to charge. It even comes completely charged when you purchase it. All in all, it's a great model.

Summary: Liked It At First, Then Had Problems, Then It Died
Review: When I first got this product about a year ago, I loved it. Spent hours downloading my music on to it, used it at the gym, in the car, and even "dj'd" parties with it. Then it started to freeze on me. At first it was an occassional thing, then it started happening ALL the time. Had to do a hard shutdown, and restart. I know that isn't the best thing to do with a hard disk, but there literally is no otherway. I wrote to Archos and they told me to just run a scandisk on it. That did nothing. A few days ago while on vacation, the unit crashed. Lost all of my music. Had to reformat the drive, and it still doesn't work. Basically, I have a $280 piece of garbage right now.

Not very happy as you can imagine.

Looking to plunk down the money for an IPOD now.

Summary: DON'T EVER BUY THIS DEVICE
Review: I ordered this Jukebox despite having read fairly negative reviews here because it seemed so reasonably priced. Boy, was I mistaken. The price may have been OK but the hours you'll spend figuring out its operating system (if you can call it that) will pretty much end up costing you an arm and a leg.

It's a terrible box with cheap buttons and an impenetrable operating system. Even after finally getting it to work it just doesn't do some basic things.

Firstly, the screen and the font used are so small you need a magnifying glass to read it. DOS was easier to navigate than this thing.

For me a big drawback (in addition to all the others) was an inability of this box to show you a playlist. You could create a playlist on MusicMatch, copy it to the box and even play it but you could never see what was in it.

There's also no way to navigate through the unit. You can't sort songs, you can't see them by artist only and the menu hierarchy is so stupid it's hard to believe that this is a product that's for sale to the public rather than a beta test version.Do yourself a favor and buy ANYTHING else besides this device. My brother just bought a ZEN NOMAD and after 2 seconds of using it I figured it out and it works!

STAY AWAY!

Summary: Great bargain!!! But with caveats.
Review: First of all, don't know anything about Archos tech support- haven't required it yet. However, I liked my unit so much, I also got one for my girl friend. We both have had both for about a month now.

My suggestion is to flash Rockbox (be careful though) on your Jukebox. It makes it much better and provides so much more features.

The unit is definitely larger (but than a iPod and definitely not as pretty. Contrary to some users who found the buttons 'cheap', I don't mind them. However, the other appliances (jacks, ports, etc) do seem cheaply put together. The case also seems to cheaply designed. I also noticed 2 fine diagonal lines on outer perimeter of the LCD screen (on both units)- not sure of these artifacts are supposed to be there or if they are cracks on the LCD inside. These 'lines' fade or go away if you press lightly on the LCD screen cover.

That being said, it's a 'geek' machine. It does so much. The Rockbox team has done a terrific job of providing firmware chock full of features- including games and other plug ins. ;-)

One thing- when you first get your unit, I recommend not downloading all your MP3s onto it at the same time. The HD will constantly run and the unit can get quite hot. I suggest doing it in stages allowing for cooling to prevent any possible damage. That being said, the transfer rate is spectacular. ;-)

I haven't used all the other features yet. I will post more when I get around to it.

>>No problem with it yet and thoroughly enjoying it.
Update: 1 of the 2 units I brought had a problem with the LCD display. On the bad unit, only about half the screen would show. I contacted Archos support.

Archos Support - I called them twice: The first time they picked up right away. The second time, they answered after about 10 minutes. The bad LCD display couldn't be resolved and they gave me an RMA number and had me send the unit back. I'll update this review when there is more to report.

*** Update 04/2004 ***
The unit came back in less than 2 weeks with the LCD fixed. (...). But no, they fixed it promptly (noted that it had Rockbox on the work order) and sent it back. I heard so many bad stories about their tech support. This was actually not bad at all though. Could they have possibly streamlined their tech support?

Judging by the posts here (lots of returns), it seems that even though I love the unit, Archos has some manufacturing (maybe design) quality assurance issues. My advice, before anything, install Rockbox.

Oh, did I mention that when I got it, after rebate, it costs [money] compared to the 20GB iPod's cost of [money]???

No contest.

Summary: Liked it so much, I bought four!
Review: I have to write to those of you considering the purchase of the Archos Jukebox. I have a 10gb, 15gb and 20gb recorder, plus a 20gb player that I have purchased over the last year and a half. I love them all. I keep one in the car, one upstairs, one downstairs and my daughter has taken over the other one. The only problem I've had is that I had to replace the batteries in one of the units since they were not holding a charge as long as the others.

One word of caution for those of you who may have the older style recorder and buy this new V2 of the recorder: They don't use the same electric charger. They look the same, but the old one is 9 volts while the new one is 6 volts. If you own both units, be careful not to mix up the chargers.

I have the Rockbox software on one of the units to overcome the 999 file limit so that I can play my entire library on random in my car unit. But I've left the other three alone. That's because, unlike some other comments I've read, I prefer the sound delivered by the included software rather than Rockbox.

Bottom line: Buy this unit before they stop making them. And since they're so inexpensive, buy more than one!

Summary: If you don't mind the size & weight, it's a no-brainer
Review: I had gotten an iriver ahp-120 & decided I couldn't afford it, esp. when this archos unit was less than half its price. Although the iriver unit was good, i felt like it was far from perfect. I hated the joystick controller. The sound options were terrible. There was no clock or calendar.

With my Archos unit running the rockbox firmware, my jukebox experience is so much better. It has all the features of the ihp-120 except for FM & it boasts many features that the iriver doesn't have. I think if hackers came up with an alternative firmware for the ihp120, it could have all the features too. But I don't know of that being the case.

Sucks that the Archos unit is so big & heavy. Plus, the buttons seem a little cheap. I never even bothered to try the included headphones. So it's far from perfect. But at this price, it's a no-brainer...

Summary: nice piece
Review: It is nice to have that much storage, and be able to record as well. Let's not forget about the price.
Go Archos.
