Summary: The best value for money for HD MP3 player
Review: Bought this player week ago.

The price is incredibly low for a 20GB MP3 player.
The quality (sound, interface) is very good, especially when you replace the the firmware with the open source one from:
http://rockbox.haxx.se/docs/features.html

Cons:
1. Plays only MP3, no other formats
2. Looks a little ugly compared to iPod and iRiver(the best HD MP3 player around)

Summary: Durability...with a side of Affordability
Review: I've had the older model of the Archos 20 GB jukebox for about three years now. Some reviewers do complain about the ruggedness of the jukebox, but I've found that it stands up to quite a beating. I usually end up using it during swim meets and on many occasions it has dropped onto a hard tile floor that has ruined an expensive CD player of mine. The little blue bumpers you see in the picture may not look too slick, but they do get the job done well. I'm sure the iPod is just as durable, but it can't even shake a stick at this babies price. I'm not saying you can throw the thing around and not expect it to break, there is a hard drive in there, but as for daily wear and tear and the occasional fall the Archos 20 GB is an extremely durable machine. 5 Stars for Durability (I can't say anything about Archos' support, I never had to deal with them. Amazon has an excellent return policy if you're still "iffy" on whether to buy one)

Summary: Not quite 'top quality'
Review: This device is the best comercially available device for on location recodings to MP3 format. However, anybody who really cares about quality sound will want to record to an uncompressed audio format, such as SDII or AIFF, which this device can't do.

This is way better than the iPod, which with an extra device, can record mono, but still a far cry from 'top quality audio.'

Summary: Geeky without being pretentious
Review: So the lcd screen is a little small,
20 gigs of space, linux based, and the abilty to be flashed with a super cool OS from Rockbox.

The interface is kinda dim, but you know what...i bought it for the space, price and size, not becuase i wanted people to think i am cool with an overpriced Ipod.

buy this, then flash it from here.

Summary: Has worked fine for me
Review: I have had the Archos Jukebox Recorder for over 2 years now and have had no complaints. I have used it as a portable hard drive, mp3 recorder and mp3 player and all have worked fine for me. The original batteries that came with it lasted about a year then I replaced them with rebular NiMH batteries from the store. Its size and shape are a bit clunky now, but when I got it it was state of the art. It is a bargain a the price it is today compared to when I bought it. After two years I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it, though.

Update: I am still happy with it. I use it as a portable hard drive as much as I do anything else. You can defrag it and scan it with Windows or Norton just like any other hard drive and that will help it run smoother after months of use. I plugged an old turntable directly into it and recorded vinyl discs to mp3 in real time. I also plugged it into my cable box and recorded some concerts directly to mp3 right off the cable tv. I just used some headphones to set the recording level and it did a beautiful job.

If you have DVDs with music you would like to listen to, you can record right off the DVD to MP3 with no trouble at all.

It is still well worth the money and a bargain at this price.

Summary: Good solid Mp3 harddrive/Player
Review: Been using this for a week, and it smokes. Bought it for my car. Any cassette to 1/8 jack will work. It is easy to understand and navigate. Like most men, I did not read the directions and started playing with the buttons and it made absolute sense. If you have windows ME or above, no drivers required just plug it in and A instant drive letter appears. Use the sendto from your right click (that is the easiest way to copy songs to the drive) The headpone design is perfect, although with many other players, it is not the best sounding but pretty good. I'm picky about my sound so a eq would have been nice, but did well without it. And comes with nice pouch to put the player in. Battery life 6 to 8 hours. Very nice.

Summary: DOES NOT WORK WITH WIN 98 , WIN 2000 and WIN XP
Review: I bought the Archos 20 GB USB 2.0 MP3 Jukebox Recorder for its good value and features..I was disappointed because it did not deliver on its promise - it was not plug and play on my laptop (Win 98 SE) nor with my 2 desktops (Win 2000 and Win XP).. I downloaded the preinstall drivers from archos.com and was successful in loading the correct drivers but still got the error 'Device could not be started (Error 10)".

Summary: Good value but no OGG Vorbis support!
Review: Even the excellent Rockbox firmware is unable to support the Ogg format on this device, due to the company being unwilling to release any specifications, nor support it themselves. For this reason, I can only recommend that you AVOID this player, and opt for the much cooler Rio Karma, or any other Ogg-compatible player. Please do not settle for proprietary file formats and allow manufacturers to ignore their customers' needs!

Summary: I like it for the price and features cant beat it
Review: First I love the price ..., it its a lot bigger than the ipod but that doesn't bother me more rugged i think. Second get rockbox software and load it on the archos itself not on your computer extract the files on to it and it will run much better good software!! Second I was a little annoyed I have had it for a week and have had some errors but turning it off and on fixed it just a little annoying but the Rockbox has a 7sec anti skip function so it may skip when running it has happened once on me. I love the size 20gigs I loaded 500 songs and I still had over 15.9gigs left.... Using the lcd is like an explore function you can move forward or backward in the files once you get used to it no problems. Also Rockbox software has some great options for audio such as loudness, treble, bass boost, antiskip, shuffle, repeat all. The battery needed to be a little better so if you play with the menu and backlight keeps going it can wear the battery down a lot faster and rockbox has some games on it like a cell phone such as snake and tetris ect. this will wear the battery down too. Oh I would of like a strap with the carrying case but still a good case. Other than that I really like this product a lot for the money it cost as much as most 256k players. I give it 4 stars our of 5!!!
