Rating: Summary: Not worth the price Review: I paid full price for these and have only kept them because of the small satellite speakers and the shape of the subwoofer; these just happened to fit the spaces I had. There is little midrange. For as large a subwoofer as this is, the actually output is quite muddy and getting the right balance can be difficult. There is no left right balance or general tone control...the bass level is on the back of the subwoofer (very bad idea). For my setup, having the main level and power on a remote control was perfect, since the speakers are not in arms reach, which is where most systems have the controls. I would look at other systems unless the specific design features are essential, as they were for me.
Rating: Summary: Great speaker system !! Review: I purchased these speakers one month ago, and installed them in my office's computer. Later on that same day, we received good news from a customer who agreed on a huge proposal we presented to them. So, I placed an Aerosmith CD in my computer, and gathered all my coworkers to give them the good news, and the sound just filled all our building. Everyone was just impressed by the looks of the speakers, but mainly by the incredible sound they deliver. I am very happy with my purchase.
Rating: Summary: Look great, sound marginal. Review: I put these side by side with the Altec ATP3s, and there was no comparison. The 2100s cost twice as much and sounded half as good. At the volume level I use in my office, the highs on the 2100s were very flat and the sub was muffled. I'm still looking for the best solution, but the 2100s were not it. (although they look great!)
Rating: Summary: Forget all the rest, Altec Lansing is the best! Review: I recieved the 5 speaker set (4100) today and I love them! Many of the other reviews mention the lack of rotary volume and the fact that you must adjust the bass on the back of the sub - well this IS NOT TRUE!! I REPEAT NOT TRUE!! At least on my brand new 4100 set the volume, bass, and treble are all rotary controlled from the desktop control module! This was my only apprehension in buying the set, and now finding the rotary control on the 4100 my happiness is complete! So if you are thinking about some new speakers, get the 5 speaker set Altec lansing 4100! Top quality!
Rating: Summary: Would of gave it a 2 1/2 stars... Review: I spent 100bucks and gave it a try after a hour of listening as i was listening it felt as though something was missing in the treble. I don't know what but it felt strange. Well, I returned this and got a Monsoon PlanarAudio 14. No comparison, hands down Monsoon out performed Altec. Its bass were too muffled compared to Monsoon and the highs were harsh, while Monsoon had a round warm sound.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic sound for all your audio / video / PC needs Review: I use this speaker system for all my DVD films, CD audio, and occasionally I move it to the PC for games with great sound effects. It is superior to systems costing ten times as much (compared side-be-side with Bang & Olufsen!) The funny thing is I bought this system thinking I would only use it for PC gaming -- but the sound was so good I quickly moved it away from the PC and over to my DVD theater where it stays most of the time. I even pack these in my suitcase when I'm traveling because hotel movies & TV are so much better with theater-quality sound. (OK, that's a little nuts, I know.) Why spend a lot of money on a "home theater" system? Listen to these first, it really is an incredible value.
Rating: Summary: Altec 2100 Computer Speakers Review: I'll go straight to pros and cons:
Pros:
1. Excellent bass; my sub volume is only up a little higher than 1/4, could be cranked if necessary, no problems with the sub at excessive volume
2. Cool-looking and very small footprint-wise sattelites (really!)
3. Sattelites sound great at low volumes and very high volumes
4. Despite what other reviewers have said, I've very easily filled rooms with the sound; those little sattelites can pump (obviously the sub can, it's huge)
5. It's a really good value for a 2.1 system, especially if you're going from only using crappy 2.0 speakers that came with the computer
Cons:
1. Really hard to tell what volume level the speakers are at. Remote has up and down buttons, but you don't know how high it is. I'm still not sure whether it remembers your previous volume or resets when you turn it off
2. You have to crawl on the floor to change the sub volume (assuming your sub is on the floor; it isn't magnetically shielded) and there isn't a separate sattelite volume control
3. Seems like the exposed drivers on the sattelites are easily dented...careful with them.
4. Sounds a bit fuzzy at mid volumes, maybe due to con #3; at high volumes the music overpowers whatever's causing it
5. Something about mid-ranges not working too well...I don't know, talk to an audiophile. I lowered the middle of the equalizer, and it sounds better, I guess.
Oh, and it's actually kind of dark navy blue, not black. Not that it's a big deal.
Rating: Summary: Simply Amazing Review: I've had very good experiences with Altec Lansing in the past with a 2.0 system sitting in my room. I wanted another speaker set with a subwoofer, so I got these 2100 ones. These certainly didn't disappoint. I really like the clarity and quality of the sound. As for the subwoofer, as a mostly classical/jazz listener, I turn my subwoofer level down so it still is manageable. While listening to rock and such, the subwoofer certainly does its job. The only minor quip I have is not knowing the volume level when you use the remote as all there is on the remote are volume and power buttons. Nevertheless, I definitely recommend these speakers as Altec Lansing steps up again with another set of excellent speakers.
Rating: Summary: THE "Deal Of The Decade"-- on sale! Review: If I told you what Amazon charged me for these (with FREE shipping) right before the holidays--they'd probably censor this review...so I'll just say "WHAT A DEAL"!!! I purchased them just for the awesome price, so I wasn't prepared to "quibble". After connecting them to a aging "boom box", loading a nice-sounding CD, and cranking them up...I was floored!
The bass is awesome; Total undistorted volume is very good; Highs are plentiful although a bit "metallic"; and the midrange is fair. I agree with the previous reviewer's observation regarding the "remote control" volume and power unit. What ever happened to a simple rotary-style control...but the "cool" slim design of the desktop drivers make that arrangement impractical. I did not notice the peculiar behavior of this control though.
Connected to a nice PC sound card, this speaker set kicks tail. At $80, you may wish to consider other options, but on sale--the Altec 2100 is very fulfilling for a typical computer audio setup, and presents some good "utility" options for other small audio devices such as "Walkman" radios and portable MP3 players used at home.
Rating: Summary: GREAT FOR SMALL ROOMS Review: If you live in a dorm or a barracks, this is a nice speaker system to have. The right and left speakers are very small, making it very easy to find a place to put them. Also, the supports for these speakers are made of metal, not cheap plastic. The volume control is a problem area, however, which is why I flicked off a whole star. Every time you turn the speakers on you have to adjust the volume according to your needs. There is no visual representation of where you are when it comes to volume. One of the selling points of this speaker system is the fact that it is so easy to connect, right out of the box. In a matter of 2 steps I had my speakers hooked up to my Playstation 2, ready to go. Until you get your mansion and the money to buy the Nakamichi Soundspace 21, these Altec Lansing speakers should serve you well.
