Summary: Great sound, annoying design
Review: I bought this system to improve on the sound coming from the crummy speakers on my ... Toshiba 27" tv and dvd system. It has done that well for the ...final price. The problem lies with the labelling of the controls. They used incredibly tiny dark grey lettering on black which is impossible to see in a semi-dark room. Those bright green leds glare annoyingly at you also. Even the operating manual pictorial shows text that I swear is only 1/32" high. I agree with others, it screams for a remote control. You cannot find the system, FAQ or support listed on the Yamaha site....

Summary: Great with XBOX and DVDs
Review: I bought this to hook up to an XBOX and it sounds awesome. Unless you crank it to eardrum bleeding level, it sounds almost as good as a BOSE satellite/sub system. Just a note: it does come with a mini optical cable so you don't need to buy one. This connector goes straight into the XBOX advanced AV connector module. You get true Dolby digital on games and DVDs as well as DTS on DVD's that were encoded that way. For the price I can't imagine that any speaker/amp setup comes close.

Summary: WOW!
Review: I bought those speakers mainly because of their price and the good reputation Yamaha speakers have. When I connected them to my Powerbook I though "nice". I received much better sound then with those flat panel speakers I used before. Then I read about M-Audio's Sonica device, that promised a professional quality sound, real 5.1 and all that stuff. It connects to every USB port (Mac and Windows) and even provides an optical port to connect the Yamaha speakers. What should I say, I improved the sound another 100%. Now the sound is just spetacular for the price. Or in short - WOW!
Do yourself a favor, get those speaker and the Sonica...

Summary: I cannot, for the life of me, get these speakers to work.
Review: I can only get 2-channel sound in 4-channel mode. That is it. I do not get any surround sound, I don't get a test tone (only static), nothing. The only Dolby option I can activate is Prologic, not DTS, which doesn't matter because I don't get sound anyway! I have checked and rechecked every connection, tried every wire combination known to man, tried two different sound cards with Dolby encoding, AND NOTHING HAPPENS. I have never been able to get these speakers to work, and I have not been able to find any information anywhere that addresses the issue. Maybe that speaks well for this system that I can't find anybody else who's had the problem, but I'm about ready to toss these things out the window, I'm so frustrated. I JUST WANT SOME DECENT SOUND!! If I'd wanted tinny, no-bass 2-channel sound, I would've bought a set of $15 Logitechs and been done with it.

Summary: very good for movie & games
Review: I can't belive this price can get me a good sound. I try to hold up this system on dvd play and ps2.I here the sound like an [expensive] theater system. That's why I give 5 stars. But, if you lisint music, I just gave 4 stars. Because i think yamaha the home theater sound system is much better than music.

Summary: You Must Get These Speakers!!
Review: I give these speakers five stars. I have a digital output on my Laptop computer and I use it for watching DVD's. I wanted a 5.1 Speaker System so I could experience all the movie. I first got the Cambridge Soundworks Desktop Theater 5.1. I enjoyed the sound produced by them but wanted to expereince the DTS soundtrack on my DVDs. The Yamaha TSS-1 speakers have the built in DTS and Dolby Digital decoding.

The Yamaha speakers are the best speakers you can get for the price. I found that Amazon has them cheaper than [internet store]. I got them while amazon had them for [money], plus the [money] rebate and free shipping. [Money] for the whole system. You cannot beat that price.

As far as the features go, The system has two digital inputs, optical and Coax (RCA). I have used both and the sound is great. I have not used the analog inputs. My Office is a 12 x 12 room and they are plenty loud. I can only turn them halfway up before they get too loud. The speaker wire length is also good. On the desktop theater speakers has wires that were way to short. Yamaha TSS-1 speakers can be placed almost anywhere with length of the speaker wire. The subwoofer produces outstanding bass. You can adjust the amount of bass produced by the sub and I have it only turned halfway.

I don't know of any drawbacks from the system other than I had to turn the Rear speakers all the way up. I would be nice to have had a little more room to play with. The speakers are plenty loud with it turned up.

If you are looking for a 5.1 speaker system I would suggest you get this system. You can't beat the price and the sound. You won't be disapointed!

Summary: Get these speakers for your PS2
Review: I got these speakers after looking around online for some better speakers for my room, to hook up to my PS2. I had seen a lot of speakers that companies make directly for the PS2 for like $200-300. Big waste of money most of them are only 2 channel, looking at the descriptions of the products just make me real mad. I found these speakers on a website for sale, but I wanted to buy them from Amazon.com because I know I wouldn't have a problem with shipping time. Anyway after doing my reading on Yamaha's website about the speakers, I learned these are the best speakers for the price to get the most out of your PS2 digital 5.1 setup. Only ... I went ahead and got the Acoustic Research Optical Digital Cable, these speakers sound amazing, for a bedroom. The best speakers you can buy for your PS2 Bottom line, Digital input, DTS, Dolby Digital and Prologic decoder (even comes with a small cable optical and RCA). I dare you to beat that. Get the most out of your PS2 sound wise.

Summary: Great for the money, does what it says
Review: I got this because it takes optical input, and my DVD player provides optical audio output; using this I could listen
to music CDs with the TV off and also it provides better sound than the TV speakers for DVD movies.

It performs these functions pretty well. The speakers are small
and a little tinny. Obviously this setup is inferior to a home audio system with real speakers, and for DVDs you still don't get the real theatre experience. But it is a clear improvement over just using your TV's audio.

And the price is good.
The quality will disappoint audiophiles, but for the rest of us it's a good purchase if it fits your needs. (Check the tech specs of this product and your audio device (DVD, PC, etc.) to make sure they match up first.)

Summary: very very NICE speakers
Review: I got this item on 04/30/02, and after I connected it with my XBOX.......the sound was performed very nice.......Although the total output are 48 watts, the sound is still loud enough to me..... If your budget is tight and still want to look for a nice, mini home theater, the YAMAHA TSS-1 is a good product for you..

Summary: HORRID
Review: I HATE THESE SPEAKERS DONT BUY EM. ONCE YOU PLUG IT IN, THE SPEAKERS COME ALIVE AND UNPLUG THEMSELVES. THEN THEY ATTACK ANYTHING THEY SEE. THEY COME AFTER ANYONE AND EVERYONE. THEY ARE EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS TO THE ELDERLY AND CHILDREN. ONCE I SAW THE SUBWOOFER JUMP ON THE HEAD OF A DOG AND THEN ALL THE SATELLITES CAME IN AND JOINED THEM. GO WITH THE CREATIVE LABS SPEAKERS. THEY ARE LESS DEADLY!
