Summary: Nice features, nice price
Review: I bought a set of these for a co-worker because they were inexpensive, but I was very impressed at how nice they sounded for the money. They have 3 other features I really like: 1, a simple volume control that controls both speakers. 2, the voltage adapter is built it, so there's no external AC adapter to use up 3 spaces on a power strip (it has a standard AC plug). 3, an external headphone jack that makes it easy to disable the speakers and listen quietly. I was so impressed, that I bought a set for myself.

Summary: bad service
Review: I bought the Altec-lansing acs-48 speakers for my pc @ home. After about six months they started to have some distortion in them.I did a search for the company and found several E-Mail addresses for them,I E- mailed all addresses that I thought would be able to help solve this problem. That was about 7 weeks ago and I still have not heared from the company.

Summary: good stuff!
Review: I bought these for my college dorm. They're excellent - an extraordinary deal and a lotta bang for the buck. Everything always sounds in great balance, as compared to some speakers I've heard, where it's all bass and no sensitivity. Don't get me wrong; the bass is enormous on these, but coming from a music major, these speakers sound NICE. Lots and lots of power with no distortion. Another plus is the dual input, which I used to give my little boom box some power, and plugged my VCR into for some really nice cinema sound. Go for it!

Summary: Yahama is better
Review: I broke the volume control on my inexpensive 5 watt speakers and was looking to replace them. I purchased the ASC22's with a rebate so it was an excellent price but they are not nearly as good as the Yahama's were. No tone control so these sound very bassy (but not a good bass) and I can't increase the treble. The yamahas at least had a tone control. I'm going to look for the yahama YSTM40's which have 24 watts power, seperate bass and treble controls, comes in black, and doesn't have a subwoofer which I don't need. The Altecs go back. (...)

Summary: Beyond my expectations!! Bravo!!
Review: I didn't want to spend too much money and I didn't want to spend too little, so I bought these Altec 3 piece speakers. They are excellent speakers. First I wanted satelite speakers for the clear sound and I wanted them to look great as well, I got both!! You can spend more money on other speakers if you have the money to blow, but most likely they will not sound/look as good as these.

Summary: Great sound system
Review: I down-rated the Altec ACS48 in a recent review because of it's perceived lack of output power and hissing at high levels and much to my embarassment, have discovered that I need to change that rating because I had not yet turned up my computer systems volume. The hissing at high levels all went away when I turned up the computer system sound level (which is what the amplifier of the speaker system receives). Without the poor input signal this unit sounds extremely loud and beautiful with no hissing. I highly recommend it. Not only does it have good highs that aren't harsh, but it carries a decent amount of midgrange too and of course a accurate and capable sub-woofer that warmly blends in the lower bass tones with the music rather than taking over disproportionally. Again, if you want to, you can turn it up! - and quite loud at that without distortion. I'm very happy with my system and have been in the stores listening to the Klipsch and others and put this one right in the same class with them. Of course at almost double the price the Klipsch had a subwoofer that sounds like it belongs with a full size stereo but to me it was overbearing and didn't blend in well at all with the midrange satelite speakers that work with it. You won't be dissapointed with the Altec ACS48 system.
The sound is on a par to that of a professional quality mini home stereo system.

Again, please be aware that alot of the other reviews listed here are for the much lesser ACS33 and others(how they got mixed in I don't know).

Summary: Great sound on a budget
Review: I had a dilemma: I wanted to get good sound in my basement, but did not want to use the space or money for a regular system, and did not want to run wiring from my upstairs system and not have controls available. The light bulb went on when I remembered my Sony discman. I already had a good experience from an Altec-Lansing system for my computer, so I went ahead and got this set. I now have it connected to the discman, and get nice, rich sound to fill my basement while I play with my son, or while my wife works on her crafts. Even my wife was impressed with the sound quality, and she typically does not notice such things.

I know these are supposed to be for computer sound - and I am sure they are amazing for that, but they are also useful for creating a small, powerful system purely for music. And this is at a small fraction of what it would have cost to get the same sound from a more "traditional" approach. The only shortcoming, in this application, is how short the cords are, but that is easily remedied.

Summary: We Spent the Evening Dancing to Beautiful Music!
Review: I had never had any speakers on my computer other than the ones that came prepackaged with it. After they died a slow, horrible, crackling death, I started to shop around. I finally chose the ACS33, both for the terrific price and the good reviews here.

The speakers were very easy to install - just plug the subwoofer into the wall, tuck it under the desk, and then plug the smaller speakers into the subwoofer and computer sound jack. When I first put in a CD to see what they sounded like, I was amazed. I literally never knew that speakers could sound like this. The sound really does seem to surround you. I have never even had a stereo sound this good. The subwoofer really makes a huge difference! We spent the evening dancing around the room to beautiful music and romantic monitor light! :)

The only drawback that annoys me about these speakers is that they must be turned on and off independently of the computer by turning a stiff horizontal dial (which doubles as the volume control) on one of the satellite speakers. The satellites are light, so you must hold it down with one hand while concentrating on turning the dial with the other. This sounds like a small thing, but after a few weeks of on-off-on-off, it can try your patience. If they must be powered independently, a simple on/off pushbutton in addition to the volume dial would be vastly preferable. This situation poses no problem, however, if you simply choose to leave the unit on.

I think the ACS33 is a great buy, and I probably would rate it 4 1/2 if I could. The sound is terrific, light years ahead of what I had before. You can't beat the price, either.

Summary: The absolute best speaker system I've used as of yet.
Review: I have had seven different computer speaker systems, including numerous four and five piece systems, and I will honestly say, I've never heard a better set of speakers than the Altec Lansing ACS48. They are incredibly clear and vibrant, the all wood subwoofer cabinet ensures that bass is clear and responsive, the main speakers are equipped with midrange speakers and tweeters, and treble is outstanding. Pros: Excellent sound quality, low cost, easy to set up Cons: large bass module, no treble adjustment, bass adjustment knob not easily accessible (on the module itself)
