Summary: No bass level control!
Review: The speakers sound good, but there is no seperate control to turn the bass down. It is set way too high and I can't find any software controls to turn it down a bit. I have seen some pretty [inexpensive] 3-piece speakers, but they always have a control for the woofer, this set assumes that you want too much bass.I wouldn't recommend it.

Summary: boom boom box can't take it
Review: These sounded fine at first when I hooked them up and played music at minimum volume. When the volume is turned up past 25%, the subwoofer sounds terrible, like it is overextending itself.

Summary: good value-good performance
Review: These speakers are inexpensive, compact, good looking, easy to install, and most importantly-they sound good. Others have complained that the bass is too loud, but you can easily adjust this from your sound software. You don't need a bass switch on the subwoofer and I for one would gladly give up such a redundant feature to save some money. The only drawback of this system is that the subwoofer unit is not magnetically shielded so it must be kept a couple feet away from hard drives, storage disks, and monitors. The satellites are shielded and can be placed anywhere.

Summary: Good sattelites
Review: These speakers I must admitt do have good sattelites for there price but I dont know what you people are talking about when you say good bass. My little sister bought a pair of Creative I300 speakers and they have ALOT more bass than these. Also these things do have a bass control right in the back of the sub unless I got a older model. Well I did buy these speakers used so maybe thats why they dont have the bass you are all talking about maybe they were abused. These things do have surprisingly good satellites alot better than any other brand for the same price in my experience. Overall I guess I would reccomend these speakers because they give you the option to upgrade to 5.1 with the extra ports in the back but if you are going for bass you are going to need to spend alot more money for computer speakers. If you want a good computer speaker with EXELLENT sound I would reccomend the klipsch promedia 2.1 THX!

Summary: Good sound, but too much base
Review: These were bought for my dad's computer. He has an intergrated sound card, but the speakers sound great. The only thing i did not like is that the subwoofer is very over powering, and would sound awful from the other room. And the subwoofer does not have a way of adjusting the bass, so it was stuck like that. The only way i could componsate for this is using a program with ajustable base. After that though they sound great.

Summary: Its great - high or low volume
Review: This speaker system is hooked up to my computer, and my TV. The sound quality is great at high volumes, and at low volumes too. One thing that dissapointed me was there is no bass adjustment on the sub. Other than that, im very happy with it.

Summary: altec lansing 221 speakers - mud
Review: This system is total rubbish. Too many reviewers are skirting around the lack of bass control: they are amplified speakers, so they should come with some sort of control, or advise to that effect at point of sale. I contacted them to ask for advice: perhaps I was missing something in the way of software. The person who responded obviously wasn't familiar with the problem, or the product either - I was told to keep them away from the walls, and put them on a carpet. Duh. Altec Lansing should know better than to let their name be put on such Far Eastern originated junk.
Reviewers - let's be honest. They are good pro audio company's poor attempt at branding. I doubt they ever saw the inside of an AL factory, or warehouse. To say "well, what do you expect for the money" - is not good enough for the AL brand. Don't encourage others to purchase.
AL - stick to pro.

Review: Well well, first of all i really like these speakers that i have purchased.... a very reasonable price... the Altec Lansing is great. Some people may think that the bass is too much, but i really enjoy strong bass.. i guess it depends on what type of music you listen too.. but overall if you like strong, deep bass & clear sound then these are great, especially for the price. well done.

Summary: Good quality system
Review: While it is true that these speakers have no bass control (or treble for that matter), most player software includes an equalizer feature. A simple adjustment to your software and these speakers will fit any taste. I find them clear and very true to the music. Nice buy!
