Summary: Speakers worth the splurge...
Review: ...You will love these speakers! As soon as I plugged them in, the sound brought a smile to my face. When you spend more money on your equipment, you expect to get better results. This system keeps that promise. The six speakers in each unit produce a clear crisp sound. The mid range is clear without the muddy sound I hear in less precise speakers. Musical instruments sound separate and distinct, voices have a good presence that is not drowned out by the background tracks.

This system is plugged into my Sony television. It improves the audio on cable and satellite programs but it really shines when we play DVD movies. The enhanced sound tracks come alive and we get more of a movie theater experience. The control head on this speaker system has an input jack so you can plug in an iPod or MP3 player and listen to the player without unplugging the television (or computer) - very handy and thoughtful of Altec.

Compared to the JBL Creature II speakers or the Harman/Kardon Soundsticks, this set from Altec Lansing is superior. The speakers play louder, the placement is not so critical and the sound is more pleasant to listen to over time.

Summary: a few hitches in an otherwise sonically astounding system
Review: Advice for previous reviewer:
If you get a rattling in the sub, the troubleshooting guidebook says one of the screws is probably loose on the back --- just tighten it up.

For everyone:
You can plug three different sound sources into this unit easily --- dvd/ps2 rca stereo input, computer single line input, and an auxillary input on the control pod for your tape player/mp3 player/ etc.

There is some static in the gaps of music (which I have come to expect from speakers at the volume I use them). Other than that, the sound is loud - crisp and undistorted even at ear shattering volumes.

Electronic/percussion/r&b/beat driven --- astounding.
Ambient -- gets me high.
Piano -- sounds right in front of you save for slight static in the gaps.
Rock/Pop/Jazz -- clear, all instruments are easily differentiated.
Spoken -- no distortion, some static.
Strings -- powerfully intense, some static in the gaps.

Note -- these speakers are very responsive to your software equalizer and to the control pod's bass/treble levels. What sounds good for one CD won't sound as good on the next. For someone like myself that listens to music from dawn til' dusk and back again, I love getting the feel for each instrument in a mix and trying to adjust the levels accordingly. For others, it might be a deterrence.

PS - REMOTE CONTROL!

Summary: Terrific Sound, Terrific Value
Review: As my previous speakers began to show some age, I spent some time at retail to see what is new and improved. As a Mac owner, a 5.1 setup is not particular advantageous (although they are impressive), so I focused my attention on 3 speaker systems (2 satellites and a sub) . I listened to a lot of brands and systems and generally came away unimpressed with two expections. The Altec Lansing FX6021 and a Klipsch setup. Both the Altec Lansing and the Klipsch were quite impressive. At the time, I gave a very slight edge to the Klipsch with cost being the primary factor. The Altec Lansing's were more expensive.

Then my girlfriend went online and found that the cost difference disappeared. Based on that, she purchased the Altec Lansing's as a gift for me. Now having spent a significiant amount of time with these speakers I can attest that these are fantastic speakers. The fact that they look so cool is just an added bonus!

The technology in the satellites is impressive. I have been absolutely amazed at the range they are capable of. As I listen to my music library I am presented with subtleties that I never new existed in a range of music genres from classical to country to rock to hip-hop. All genres sound fantastic. The much discussed bass response can be quirky at times, but I have found that spending a little time to adjust the settings for a particular genre or song results in improved response and more than adequate sound. I'm sure there are slightly better systems (Klipsch, for example) for bass response, but the Altec Lansing FX6021 is an outstanding system - an all-around winner. You will NOT be disappointed.

The price point is still relatively high for a 3 speaker system, especially at retail, but online the price becomes an incredible value. Go listen to these speakers, try them out and then come back and buy them here (Amazon). You will be impressed and your ears will love you for it!

Summary: cool looking and cool sounding
Review: I am very happy with the sound and the looks of the system. The remote control can come in very handy. You can also fine tune the system using both the remote and the wired controls. I have listened to many different types of music on this system and find that it performs very well across the board. Combine the looks with the sound and you have a very nice computer sound system.

Summary: The best speakers for an Imac G5 20"!!!
Review: I bought these for my new iMac G5 which has underpowered speakers. Its a perfect computer but really lacks good high fidelity speakers. This set of speakers sounds so good you will not belive its not a full rack audio set up. Really! They fill the room wioth pure and clean sound that has teh highest crispiest highs and the bassiest lows that thump the walls. I truly have never heard audio like this come from a computer.

Easy plug and play Mac set up. Take it out of the box plug it in and the speakers plug into the headphone port on the computer. Even has a very useful remote with the ability to change not only the volume, but the treble, bass and power from across the room!!!

This kind of sound doesnt come shea unfortunately. But these speakers arent for the average user. This audiophiles dream set up is for someone with discriminating audio taste and really for the higher end music lover. this set uses "In-Concert" technology which is Altec's proprietary sound filter system that clearly seperates teh music instruments for deep and layered music listening.

I honestly heard notes and instruments in tracks I hadnt noticed before. It brings teh music alive and is worth every penny.Hope you enjoy them as much as I have so far. They even give you batteries for teh remote! ( Its a small watch battery that is supposed to last six months as there is no lights or battery wasting gadets on the remote.)

Summary: Kickass speeakers that won't disapoint
Review: I bought these speakers a week ago and i love them! These are the 2nd best computer speakers that you can by. You may think that other ones that cost more sound better, but that is not true. The main reason why other computer speakers cost more is because they have a better sub woofer, thats all. The only one that decisively wins over this set( in terms of sound) is the most expensive one on earth ($1000). Here i will explain to you why this is a good deal and why you should spend so much money for computer speakers. First of all you need to decide what is right for you...... These speakers are for music lovers. If you occasionally listen to low quality music with not much to it than these speakers are not for you. Also if you only use speakers for the occasional beep that the computer makes then you will be wasting your money. You WOULD wan't these speakers if you listen to HIGH quality music on your computer... not illeagal music which is low quality. These speakers are great when you play DVD's that have action in them, explosions and are instesting enough for you to want to listen to what there saying. Also if you like any type of music and have a 2003 modle computer or later these speakers will work perfectly w/ your computer. As for the speakers themselfs they sound BETTER than ANY OTHER computer speaker on the market. The SUB WOOFER is very good but not the best. It can it really low tones but can't keep up a contionuouse vibration like in the song Yeah! Still it is very good for all types of music, suprisingly also clasicle music. You may wan't to know "Why would any one wan't to buy $200 computer speakers? I'll tell you why. NOT ONLY DO THESE SPEAKERS WORK ON COMPUTER BUT THEY CAN ALSO HOOK UP TO SURROUND RECIEVERS, DVD PLAYERS AND T.V'S!!!! So these could easly opperate as your living room surround sound( for $100 less than most cost). Also these will never break. The speakers are titanium drivers!!! That meens that they can't crack or over expand! The sub woofer has it's limits though. When the speakers can get exponentially loud the sub can not. It can handle most things but eventually distorts at extemely high vomumes. Most women will be more than satisfied w/ it but people like myself might not be satisfied(only 2% of people i think would wan't it louder). The bottem line is GET THESE SPEAKERS IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY!! they ecompase high low and mid with outstanding accuracy!!!I got them and if your into serious sound then you should conisder getting these speakers!!!!

Summary: Astounding for the Price
Review: I bought these speakers because I wanted something to hang on the wall and be invisible in my living room. In my family room I have a stereo system that costs nearly $5000. I was astounded at how close the sound of these amplified speakers comes to my high end system, at least in the all important midrange and treble.

The mid range and the treble (produced by the sattelites) is nearly world class. Sweet and clear, very musical and non fatiguing but with pleny of detail. For speakers hanging on the wall they image very well too. I would guess you would need to spend 5-10X the price of these to get performance to match this.

Since for your $200 you are getting both speakers and an amplifier (!!), you just need to hook them up to a decent CD, MP3 player or DVD player and have a very nice system for only around $300. Or make your computer really sing by using these instead of whatever junk it shipped with.

As others have mentioned the woofer on this system is only adequate. Keep in mind you can adjust the bass by moving it toward or away from walls and corners. If it sounds boomy, move it away from the wall (extension cables for the speakers are included so you can move them pretty far away from the woofer). The bass is OK and does have a "one-note" quality to it, but for $200 for amplified speakers, are you kidding - the overall sound from these is amazing, even at several times the price.

The speaker connections to the woofer are proprietary so you cannot upgrade the woofer. I hope Altec Lansing considers selling the sattelites with a more worthy woofer or selling the sattelites separately to pair with a woofer of your choice. The sattelites are really something speacial - I would say revolutionary at this price point - and deserve to be marketed in as many ways possible.

If your definition of good sound is overexaggerated, teeth jarring bass, you should probably look elsewhere. If you are looking for clear, sweet, balanced, accurate music, pair these with a $100 CD player and you have a system that rivals some costing several thousand dollars. Very highly recommended.

Summary: It's a fantastic set of speakers
Review: I have a Apple Studio display and a 12'' Powerbook and have researched numerous speaker offerings. After having read all of the available reviews, I chose this model because it matched Apple's latest aethetics and was loved by so many. The setup was stupid-simple and the sound was surprisingly good! I listen to a relatively wide range of music (electronic to jazz) and these speakers are able to produce great fidelity and a booming bass if needed. Do not underestimate the ability to calibrate the bass and treble separately. It makes all the difference in the listening experience. For computer speakers in the $300.00 range, these are the speakers to get!

Summary: Best 2.1 Computer Speakers
Review: I've owned more computer speakers than I care to admit and now I've finally found the best. The sound is crisp and clear, stereo imaging is excellent.

Yes, the bass is a little quirky at times (sometimes too boomy and other times too thin), but on balance, they are the most enjoyable computer speakers I have ever owned.

When you spend so much time in front of the computer the extra money is well worth it when you factor in all the hours and all the years of great listening.

The form factor is perfect. I have a large monitor in a computer hutch and precious little space on either side and these speakers fit perfectly.

The little remote and the headphone jack option are also very cool.

I highly recommend these speakers.

Summary: is it really worh it?
Review: last year, i was using the altec lansing 641... until the bass stopped working on it. the company has been very supportive and gave me the new fx-6021.
the satellites sounds excellent... and the bass is "acceptable".

but recently... my bass started rattling... there must be some loose items in there... the noise can't be really be noticed unless it exceeds approximately 2/5 of its full capability...
once the speakrs and placed lying sideways... i found the rattling noice reduced.

the design of the satellites are awesome... while the bass looks somewhat dull... i would have to say that this speaker system is a bit overpriced for the kind of quality you get from these speakers

over all, i like this system.. it's just that rattling noise.. it's so annoying~ (i've never read of other cases of rattling for this item from other reviews)
