Description:
If you're hankering for a powerful three-speaker set for gaming or just listening to music, Labtec's APX-4620 delivers the goods. This set contains a total of 70 watts of booming power, with crisp treble from the satellites and thundering bass from the large and stylish, wood-enclosed subwoofer. Setup takes a bit of time, as the left satellite must be plugged into the right, and the right must be attached to the subwoofer twice (once for sound and once for power) and to your PC twice (once for sound output and once for the microphone pass-through port). Luckily, the underside of each satellite contains a plastic spool allowing you to wind up extra cable length. If you're inclined, setup also involves mounting the speakers to the sides of your monitor with the included brackets (which allow them to fit almost any monitor). The right satellite houses all the controls, including treble, bass, volume, and the Variable Spatializer 3-D Imaging, which refers to the 3-D sound effects the speakers deliver with games and audio CDs that support 3-D sound. It's not as good as having four speakers for true surround sound, but the simulated effects are definitely noticeable, especially in gameplay (sounds appear to come from above, below, and behind you with this feature enabled). Also on the right satellite are input jacks for a headset and a microphone, nice touches for video conferencing or listening to music without disturbing the neighbors. While the speakers aren't inexpensive and the power button is inconveniently located on the subwoofer, the sound delivered is crisp and loud, and the stylish speakers will look great on any desk. --J. Curtis Pros: - Powerful sound
- Headphone and microphone input jacks
- 3-D sound
Cons: - Not cheap
- Lots of cables
- Power switch located on subwoofer
