Summary: Disturbing the peace
Review: I purchased these speakers five months ago and continue to be awed by it's ability to play thunderously Loud, with good High's and Mid's and its room shaking Bass.I have read many favorable reviews on these speakers prior to purchasing them.
These speakers bring out a whole new sound quality on all media compared to my old Nakamichi 2.1 computer speakers and even my expensive Home Audio system, with it's much better imaging via it's four sattelites and clear Awesome power.
I have heard of some people complaining about the Sub's blowing out, this problem was addressed by Logitech and was only found in the original released versions. Also don't max it out in the sound software (ex. Full Bass and Gain) and you should not have any problems. These speakers are known as Klipsh Killers in the trade and for good reason.I also personally prefer a 4.1 speaker system over a 5.1 because I find there is better stereo seperation with the voices when playing DVD's you hear more discrete seperation ex. two people talking across a room one coming out the right front satellite the other coming out of the left front. The 5.1 systems have most voices coming strictly out of the center channel, losing a sense of spaciousness. You will most likely not miss the audio of the center channel because the 2 front satellites makes up a quasi center channel speaker sound, due to it's imaging.
For the price and sound quality they compare to other brands at twice the cost.
UPDATE:
I recently purchased an Audigy 2 sound card, even when following my own reccomended listening guide lines of not overloading the inputs to the speakers and playing less than half volume with about 50% Bass level the amp in the Sub blew and then smoked. There was absolutley no indication prior to its blowing out EX. distorted sound output. Thes speakers had no problems even at extremely loud volume levels with my C-Media 6 channel sound processor, so if you use them with the Audigy 2 Soundcard be extra carefull with it's output levels and EQ.
Also mine were supposedly the newer revised version of the speakers according to their serial number, but they still blew anyway. I exchanged them for the same due to their sound quality.

Summary: Comparing Logitech z-560 to Monsoon and Klipsch
Review: I read about the Monsoon PM 9s in Maximum PC where they got a score of 8 out of 10. I also read the reviews at Circuit City.com. I bought the Monsoons and they are good speakers, but I am settling on Logitech Z-560s. In the course of deciding on which speakers to buy, I also bought the Klipsch 4.1 set for 199. THe Klipsch were richer and more powerful but also muddier. For playing Warcraft 3 or other sonicly rich games, I would go with the Klipsch over Monsoon if I was okay with the extra 99 dollars. For music too, but I found I had to really work the graphic equalizer and the various volume controls to get the Klipsch to not distort. Actually, this was true for the Monsoons also. I thought I would plug the speakers in and get great sound automatically. I had to open three menus: the Audigy sound control, the Windows volume control, and the Nero Ahead graphic equalizer and volume control. The defalt settings had me thinking the speakers were really bad, and then I remembered all the good reviews. SO I started opening up applications to find the audio settings. Three menus!!! (I have a Sound Blaster Audigy sound card and was using Nero Ahead for play back of CD songs ripped to my hard drive.)Man, what a diference when I got the sound settings tamed. The Monsoon speakers went from awful to very good, as did the Klipsch. These two were pretty close in total quality, though the MOnsoons were clearer and the Klipsch were a little richer. And there is the rub - just very good. I now have the Logitech 4.1 THX speakers (Z-560). These combine the uummph of the Klipsch with the clarity of the Monsoons. Maximum PC called them the Klipsch killers and they were right. The Logitech rock. They handle volume well, they are rich, and they are clear. I am glad I took the time and effort to listen to all three at home. I almost didn't try the Logitechs cause I was getting worn out with all the setting up and unpacking. But it was worth it.

Summary: These speakers rock
Review: These speakers aren't for everyone, but if you are an audiophille, then these speakers will work wonders for you. At [$$$], you could easily pick up two of these for the price of one set of Klipch 5.1 surrounds and you won't even notice the missing center channel. These speakers can be cranked and have very little distortion even at high volumes. The M3D feature makes stereo input into "surroud sound" (basically the rear speakers just emulate what the fronts are doing). This is nice when you hook them up to a CD player or other stereo device so all four speakers pump out sound instead of just two, but if you have a surround sound card, you won't need it. There's a built in headphone jack which works whether or not the unit is powered on. My only real gripe is that the subwoofer seems to pump out too much bass, often drowning out the treble produced by the other speakers. This is easily remedied by lowering the bass setting on your computer (or CD player, etc). All and All, a very solid, well built surround sound setup.

Summary: Sound quality that you won't believe !...
Review: I have had these speakers for 6 months now and I love them. The sound quality is incredible - this system sound quality can easily compete with home stereo systems in a $1,500 to $2,000 price range - and it can easily compete volume wise.

I have been into great sound systems for almost 20 years now. Just to give you an idea of where my tastes run and what I consider to be high quality sound, let me tell you a quick story. I bought a pair of Infinity Kappa home stereo speakers - at the time they cost a $1,000 a pair - (the "baby" 3 way system of the line at that time - a 10" woofer, 4 1/2 midrange, and ribbon tweeter) - about 15 years ago - I still have them, they still work great - the rest of the original system has died. So I know great audio!

This system is dangerous for apartment dwellers! It has very deep base at loud volumes - watching DVDs with this 400 watt system is awesome! You will be making the neighbors very upset if you crank this system! The base will be heard and felt by all the apartments immediately above, below, and around you. This system sounds great with any type of music, and watching movies on DVD is great - it sounds better than most of my friends home movie surround sound systems!

Believe it or not the system is slightly underpowered for the 4 satellite speakers - the sound balance between the base and mid-range and highs is perfect - but when you are watching movies and really crank the volume, during really loud intense sequences - the amp sometimes - clips giving a very loud pop over the satellite speakers. I've did this several times watching the U-571 DVD battle sequences. The first day I got my system I tested it using the U-571 DVD. I was watching the submarine vs. battleship - battle sequence at near full volume - the battleship fired and the speakers made a very ugly pop! I was terrifed that I had blown my speakers the first day out of the box! It turns out the speakers are fine - but the amp does clip on very loud battle sequences on DVD - so avoid the temptation to crank your system more than half way - otherwise you will greatly reduce your speakers lifespan!

The only major complaint I have about the system is the cheap plastic pushdown connections for hooking up the speaker wire on the back of the subwoofer/amp. The wires are held in place by the plastic tabs using spring tension - if you trip over your wires once or twice - tension no longer is there and you lose one of you speaker channels if something bumps the wire. Otherwise the system is of very high quality.

You can mount the satellite speakers to your wall easily - the speaker mounts are reversible & easily changed.

Summary: I really wish it had worked...
Review: I purchased these, based on the glowing reviews of others. Well, that and the price tag, of course. Unfortunately, I didn't have the same good luck. I decided to add my experience to the mix, as much for fairness sake as anything else. And it appears that Logitech may have made some changes to this setup since it was introduced on the market, based on the differences in some of the reviews. For example, in the packages I received, the sub plugs into the pod via a DIN cable, and not into the card. You'd think that would make things easier...
I have tried two different sets of these with many different sound cards, and have been unable to produce sound from the rear speakers. The front speakers work plugged into either jack, but the rear doesn't produce sound. Of course, the sub always works. The only real variable was that I didn't try a creative labs card. And it may be that with a creative labs card, it would have worked. I just don't like their cards. To my mind, they run too hot, and the software is incredibly bloated.
A couple of other things to consider that may not be evident over the internet. The bass control does control the bass, but not to the level that might be expected. There is, inexplicably, no treble control. The volume is a little touchy. In general, unless all you really want is loud all of the time, you may want to be sure that you have a good equalizer through your sound card. This is, of course, just a general impression. I reached this with only two speakers running, and can only imagine how the effect would be multiplied with all of them. I really wish they'd worked. From what I could tell, the sound was very clean and crisp. I hate to have to start all over again...

Summary: Superb sound a bargain price
Review: These babies are well worth the money!

Let me start by explaining a little about myself. I am very into home theater and car audio, and I prefer a "bassy" system, with a powerful low-end, and the Z560's provide just that. They have very good mids and highs (although a tweeter would have been a nice addition), and really kick with the high-powered subwoofer. I've noticed a number of complaints about the subwoofer "blowing", and this is most likely due to the lack of the "break-in" period for the sub. As with all subwoofers (and speakers for that matter), these speakers must be properly broker in. You see, when the rubber surrounds are first used, they are quite tight, and have a tendancy to damage the voice-coils of the speaker/sub when high wattage is pumped through them. High end home theater systems usually recommend a 20-30 hour break-in, however, since the Logitech's are a bit looser than true hi-fi systems, a ten hour break in is probably plenty. What this means is that you should not crank the volume up past 1/3 for the first ten hours you use the system. I've also read that classical music is a good break-in music choice since it is very light and not too heavy on the bass.

So remember, when you first set up your Z-560's, DO NOT crank them all the way up and blow the sub.

Summary: High-Quality Speakers
Review: I bought these speakers in December 2003 as an early Christmas present to myself. I was intending to buy a cheap 2.0 speaker setup for my Sony CD walkman. I went to CompUSA(But didn't buy from them) to check prices, power, frequency responses, and other criteria. The store had many speaker systems set up for availiable testing. I, being intrigued with the speakers on display(and their high prices) tested them out. the setups on display included the Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 system(hailed by many as the best), many Harmann Kardon systems, and the Logitech Z-640 and a 2.1 system(this was before the Z-680, Z-5300, Z-2200, and other more recent Logitech Z-series came out.) of all these systems I tested(the audio track the store had looping was of a variety of genres, jazz, classical, rock, techno, and others), the Z-560's were the best by far I tested. I tried the M3D setting, and it worked quite well. I adjusted the bass, fade, both with and without M3D and the speakers were distortion free up until a very high volume. The top-of-the-line klipsch speakers I tried did not sound very good to me, and the Harman Kardon ones did not sound nearly as good to me. I was so impressed with the Z-560s that I knew I had to have them. (...). As soon as I got the money, I bought them and use them everyday. They sound phenomenal, even playing multiple genres of music, DVDs, and games(since buying them I have put them on my computer, after buying one with a working soundcard). I am also very glad there is no hiss while idle as has been reported with other Logitech speakers. The sattelite speakers can also use any type of speaker wire(non RCA type) so I have been able to put the speakers around the computer way beyond the length of the supplied cord. All in all, these are the best speakers I have heard, especially for the price. Oh, did I mention that it is also THX certified? this means that the distortion levels are much lower for the speakers causing them to sound better. It also means that the speakers have a wide frequency range with high-quality audio from the speakers at all frequencies. I am very impressed with them and would recommend them in a heartbeat to anybody.

By the way, the speakers do not have to be very loud to be powerful(400watts RMS means 400 watts flowing throughout the system at any volume.) I have never taken the speakers past 1/2 volume as they get painfully loud, still without distortion.

Summary: Better than the Bose sound system
Review: Wow! This sound system is excellent! I use to be an Altec Lansing fan until I got the Logitech Z-640 sound system. That sound system was great but I had to upgrade. So I got this one.

Wow again! The subwoofer is 188watts of pure fun (not for the neighborhood) and the speakers are 53watts of clear sound. This is better than the bose sound system mainly because it produces the same sound but doesn't cost $2000.00 No, just divide that by a 10 and you'll get your price!

This is also THX certified. In other words it is approved for movie blasting! HAHAHA!!! Get your sound system TODAY!!! Don't look around any longer. The only sound system better than this is the Z-680 5.1 THX certified sound system! (comes with extra speaker, wireless remote control, and something else) But it costs $399 on logitech.com So if you get it. Buy it from amazon.

I could go on and on about this system but I can't. (I'm limited to 1,000 words)

Summary: WOW
Review: These speakers are incredibly awesome! They are great in sound quality, has amazing bass and surround sound! Amazon delivered it in a few days as expected and the speakers came in perfect condition.

The only flaw I would find is that the wires are relatively short if you want to round them to the back. Also, the subwoofer is HUGE, so make sure you have enough room.

Otherwise, these speakers rock!
