Summary: Good news and Bad news.
Review: I got to use this great little unit exactly one time and was more than just thrilled by the performance! It was wonderful, hence the five stars. Unfortunately, from that day forward the "Real Player 2" software has refused to work for me w/my Windows XP. Three installations and I still get some kind of techno-babble refusal. The really bad news is that Creative Labs tech-support does not support. I have gotten no response from them at all and am now going to return the unit. Jim Wolf, Clovis, CA

Summary: Great mp3 player for the price
Review: Easy to use, durable (have dropped it a couple of times), small with strong battery life (8-10 hrs), and very reasonably priced. I shopped around quite a bit and this one seems to score well with both users and Consumer Reports. I have not been dissapointed. I especially like the fact that you can expand to 256 mbs by buying a smart media card and that the firmware is upgradeable. The only thing I would change is the headphones, which are the behind the neck style. They sound good, but I would prefer ear buds. Player does not come with an instruction manual...be prepared to go to Creative's website to download, although realistically once you read how to navigate some the less used features (like voice recording) and setting the time, you will never need instructions again.

Summary: GREAT PRODUCT - easy software - easy to use
Review: This product was used to listen to music cross country - I used the WMA format and listened to music from 6 cds. I also used it as a voice recorder which worked just fine. Not the best voice recorder but did the job . I am buying one these great players for my sister for Christmas.

Summary: Nomad IIc 128MB Rocks!
Review: This is an excellent mp3 player. It came with 128MB of memory. I bought an additional 128MB for a total of 256MB. I can fit about 50 or so mp3s at 128kbps quality. The software it came with didn't work properly under Windows XP, but I downloaded MusicMatch with the Nomad plugin and it works fine. I've heard people say that the volume is too low, but I found it to be quite loud. The headphones were ok, although not great. The only thing I wish it came with is a remote control. I got used to my minidisc's remote. Other than that, I recomment this player, especially for the price.

Summary: Great little unit for the price
Review: I don't really know what all the other people are complaining about. I really love my Nomad IIc. With the additional 128Mb card it holds plenty of songs to last me for days of my commute. The single AA battery lasts for about 16 hours with NiMh, the only way to go. I was not expecting much from the included headphones but they sound pretty good. I already had a nicer lightweight pair so I use them. I am among the exceptions that like the software, for the most part. The only complaint I have is that you have to treat the onboard flash memory and the memory card separately for adding and deleting songs. Still works pretty quick though. I really suggest buying this one, especially if you get a in store rebate like I did.

Summary: Great MP3 Player
Review: The Nomad iic is a great, portable MP3 player. It has its good points and areas where it could be improved. Also, it is very affordable for the quality you are getting.

Its small, about the size of a cell phone. It comes with a useful belt clip. The steel case is shiny and very hard, but be careful: Its definately not water proof and scratches easily. The buttons have a high quality feel. The LCD screen is somewhat small, but a lot sharper then I thought it would be. It also comes with a backlit, which is really bright and doesn't suck your battery too much.

The sound quality is excellent. Crisp, clear sound, especially for such a small MP3 player. It has powerful volume... The max is 25, but around 13 is loud enough for most people.

The 128mb version is plenty room for most people. If you plan on putting your entire collection on here, look elsewhere. A Jukebox or iPod would be good for that. This is good for holding around 30-50 songs at a time(depending on the size and quality of your MP3s... most are 128). You can also put WMA files on it, which are smaller than MP3s but not as high in sound quality.

The built in mic is good. I have found no use for it myself other than goofing off, but if your a student or a reporter I can see why this would be important. The recording quality is ok, depending on your surroundings. I think it works best if you hold it close to the source of the sound.

The included headphones are good. They are great for runners. They have a band that goes around the back of your head, instead of over the top of your head like most. But what keeps them on is how they fit snug behind your ear, making it really hard for them to fall off. You'd have to go upside down for them to fall off. This might be a little uncomfortable at first, but you'll forget all about them after a little bit.

The IIc runs on a single AA battery. You will get many hours of usage out of this. The louder the volume, and the more you use the backlight, the faster this will deplete. But don't worry about it failing in the middle of a run, because it has a small meter telling you when the battery is near empty.

The Nomad has some very useful options. Set your backlight, the contrast, power off settings, and output (headphones or line-out).

Turn it on by holding the Play button (up on the D-pad) for 2 seconds. Turn it off by holding the Stop button (down on the D-pad). When you turn it on, there will be a welcome message saying "Welcome to Nomad II." Then it will proceed to where you were last: whether it be at a menu or playing a song.

The biggest fall of the Nomad is in the software. I have had no problems with it myself, but many people have reported problems with it... A patch would be great.

Transfering over USB is fairly fast. A 3 minute MP3 at 128 quality takes about 30 seconds.

The included manual isn't very helpful. Its basically pictures with a little caption written in five languages under that. However, setting up your Nomad IIc is fairly simple so this shouldn't be a huge problem. If you do get stumped, just go to [their website] and download the much better manual there (I think its in PDF format).

Summary: Pretty Much Perfect
Review: For a flash-based MP3 player, this is the best, in my opinion. I have used it for over a month now and the little player is very durable. I dropped it a few times while jogging and it never skipped a beat. With a 128 mb SM card with it, it holds 256mb which is plenty if the MP3's are recorded @ 128kbs which mine are. It holds approximately 55-60 songs at this rate which is more than adequate for its price. The sound quality is excellent and the volume level is adequate, could be louder but I have found that if the MP3's are recorded at a higher bit rate, the volume problem is solved. The file system is easy to use, however, you must use the Creative Play Center app to load the files onto the player. It is a nice piece of software and allows you to rip MP3's at 320 kbps which is very nice and convenient. I am NOT a fan of Musicmatch's Jukebox system and enjoy not having to use it. The battery last about 12-15 hours, which is about 12-15 trips to the gym which translates to approximately 3 weeks for 1 AA battery which is very inexpensive. The belt clip is adequate and serves its purpose. My only complaint is that it did not ship with a arm band. This is a minor complaint and easily solved as I created my own. This is only an issue while working out (non-cardio). The player is very light, small in stature and performs perfectly. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a player to workout with. Ecstatic with my purchase. However, purchase a SM card becuase 128mb is not enough if you tire of your music quickly.

Summary: Great (as long as you know what you're getting)
Review: I got it in the mail yesterday from Amazon.com and it's still like Festivus morning. The size and weight are absolutely perfect. The interface is just fine -- the manual is on the CD but it's superfluous. The only complaint I have is that you can only do one thing at a time (you can't browse your songs while you're listening, using the voice recorder or checking the time, etc.). You can't do anything on the player itself when it's connected to the computer. You can't have folders or song-specific EQ settings. There's no radio. Life goes on, these are pretty small things. There is a voice recorder -- it's not pro quality but it definitely works. It would have been nice if there had been a pouch/remote (not that you need one)/rechargeable batteries. The memory is good and the player just WORKS. Sound quality is great. The headphones are slightly uncomfortable but quite bearable. The player looks cool too. Awesome for the price.

Summary: Excellent choice all around
Review: This unit is fantastic!! Like most new (all electronic devices) it is extremely light and about the size of a deck of cards.

It's easier to download music from your computer than with some older or more proprietary units, thanks to its USB interface!!

You even see the name of the song that's currently playing!!

It even has VOICE recording capability so if you have an idea while you're out and about, you can actually "speak your mind" into it and then play this back later without the risk of overwriting your music. Not only that, you can record for quite a while and the quality (although not the highest) is pretty darn good. Run into someone in Paris who wants to speak to you in French and you're not quite ready for the "lesson"? No problem. Record it! Then listen to it on your way back to the hotel room. And save it until you're back in Santa Fe, where you can upload it to your computer and then email it to your friends!

My partner uses it so he can listen to his own compositions as he's driving around in San Diego for work. That way he can think of things that need changing like awkward lyrics or transitions, etc.

Excellent choice!!
