Review: I didn't even read other people's review before I got this. I got, did what it told me to do, and about two hours was listening to music! I get about 40 songs on it and can listen for around 8 hours before recharging, which isn't a problem because if you use the AC adapter you can listen while it's charging! It's worth the money!

Summary: Don't buy it
Review: This cute little machine worked fine for 6 months, then the static screams began. Rio customer service is TERRIBLE, they don't respond to either phone calls or emails. There are lots of MP3 alternatives out there. We have a Nomad and an iPod that far exceed the rio in quality.

Summary: Great MP3 Player - very difficult to calibrate the battery
Review: This is a fantastic MP3 player. It is very easy to use, I never had to read the manual, you can figure out everthing. The display shows all the info. You can hold a great deal of songs depending on the quality that you want. THERE IS A BIG PROBLEM WITH THE BATTERY
The first time I calibrated the battery it was so bad. It never told me how much battery life it really had and would shut off after only one hour. The tech support was very good and they told me how to double calibrate the battery, now it works like a charm. This seems to be the main problem people have with the unit is the battery calibration not taking.

Summary: Love My RIO!
Review: Bought my Rio 800 around the end of Aug-2001.
The first unit that I had worked great, except, the USB connection was very flaky. It had trouble maintaining a connection to the computer. It would take 15 minutes
or more to establish a link. Things would be ok after that for a while. As a bit of time went on, things got worse. Where
The connection would only last for 30 sec, to a minute.
And again, took forever to get it connected. After several calls, to tech support they concluded
that I might have a defective unit. I got a replacement,
and the new, well a couple months old now, works great.
no difficulty at all. Very stable, when connected, to the computer, to transfer files. The battery life is good. I am not critical, that the battery life doesn't last the rated period. Which with a battery, is a realistic expectation in my opinion. The rated battery is NOT a guarantee, just an estimate, and should be considered as such. (my opinion) I do sympathize with those who have commented, though that the battery, and the unit failed soon after purchase, I know how that can be frustrating, after going through 3 units as some have commented on here. 3 hrs, i do agree that there was a good change of a problem. I get about 6 to 7 hrs, which is very adequate, considering, the unit must, run some internal software, and also be used to power the amplifier. The software does take a little learning curve, but is efficient, in transfering files to the rio. So I'd highly recommend this unit. I use mune all the time, and enjoy it very much The one thing to remember, or 2. The 800 is still a pretty new mp3 player, the portable mp3 player technolegy is still in it's infancy (evolving) , but i still think they are a lot of fun!, even if it a still a bit bumpy.

Review: I purchased the Rio 800 about a month ago, despite the terrible reviews. A lot of people said that there's was defective and had to be returned. But I decided to try it out anyway, everyon's can't be defective. I have been TOTALY satified with mine. It has a bunch of bunch of accessories. A clock/calender, voice recording which is very clean and clear, unlike what some other people said about having to talk really close to it, I can talk a foot away and can still hear myself loudly and clearly. The sound on the Rio 800 is exeptional! I can fit around 45 songs in the 128mb flash memory at 128kbps, which is very good quality. It comes with a nice looking case which keeps it clean and keeps it from getting dameged and it is surprisingly easy to navigate the Rio without taking the case off. It also comes with a cool loking pair of folding headphones, but they got pretty uncomfortable after about a 20 minutes. I suggest buying a pair of nice earbuds for about $(***). The only thing I have to say that is bad is the battery indicator. Usally when I turn it on it says I have 100% battery life left even when I don't. Then after about 10 minutes it will show the correct or what I think is correct battery life. Another thing is about a week ago it said I had 42% battery life left(4 hours), and then it just shut off and it would'nt turn back on until I charged it, which takes about 2 1/2 hours. Anyway, besides the battery indicator this player is the best on the market, I love it! I highly suggest you purchase this player if your looking for one. I got mine off Amazon.com (***)

Summary: Sadly defective product--died after about 15 minutes of use
Review: On paper, this looked great--it worked with both my Mac and PC, had a lot of memory, came from a known manufacturer with a good reputation. I read several negative comments about this product, but assumed that users were doing something wrong, like miscalibrating the battery, putting the power cord in the wrong slot, etc. Sadly, I experienced the same problem that many others on this page complained about. I calibrated the battery, downloaded the songs, enjoyed the player for 15 minutes, only to watch it power itself down, never to be reactivated. It would be very interesting to see how many of these players have been returned. My guess is that the number must be high. Caveat Emptor!

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I'd been looking for a portable music device for a while. I wanted something I could go running with and something I could listen to while traveling. (I fly a lot.) I first bought a Sony MiniDisc player because most MP3 players can't even hold a single CD. (64 MB is not enough for a CD, 128 is closer.) But transfering music from my Computer via USB to the MiniDisc player was agonizingly slow. (One disc took anywhere from 1.5 to 5 hours.) I needed something that could transfer songs more quickly, so I returned the minidisk player and forked over more cash for the Rio 800 with 128 MB or RAM. I paid close to .... The first time I used it, it worked great. But everything went down hill after that. Here are the problems that I ran into: 1. 128MB is really not enough for anything but jogging around town. If you go on a trip, you're gonna get tired of listening to the same 1 or 2 albums over and over. 2. Power management stinks. The thing would randomly shut off on me even though it said that more time remained. This continued to happen even after I reconditioned the battery. 3. There does not seem to be any support for variable bit rate encoding, which is a must if you are trying to cram high quality music into only 128MB. 4. List management stinks. Arranging the songs in my preferred order seemed to be impossible. 5. The battery is very difficult to remove. 6. The darn thing froze on me after using it for about a month. I deleted some songs and then transfered something new. The screen went all wacky and now it's unusable. I tried turning it off and then on. I tried running down the battery and then charging it up. I also removed and reattached the battery, all to no avail. My Rio no longer works at all! I will never buy another Rio product. I'm very dissapointed. I'm going to try to return it, but I don't have a lot of time on my hands and I think the return window has already passed. Maybe Apple's iPod is what I'm looking for? But I already felt guilty for shelling out almost .... Apple wants ....

Summary: Rio 800 is a nightmare!
Review: In the past week I've owned two brand new units. First you have to charge the battery for 6 hours before it can be used. Then both units quit working entirely within their first hour of use. They would only power up with the battery charge cord then would both die within 10 seconds. After spending days troubleshooting the Rio's and not receiving any customser service help (from Rio) I decided to go with the Intel Pocket Concert instead and I'm very happy with that unit's quality. Hard to find any complaints on the net with the Intel unit. If you get a working Rio 800 people seem to like it, but you're darn lucky to even get one that works.

Summary: Would be great if it could last for more than a week
Review: I was pretty excited when I finally got my MP3 player. I set it up put all my music on it, and instantly loved it. Then a week later I went to turn it on and nothing happened. Disappointed, I returned it and ordered another. Again it worked great, and made it to the week mark. Then on day 8 the second one broke. Again I went to turn it on and nothing happened. It looks great, and sounds great when it works. Nothing should break a week after you buy it. It's not even worth buying.
