Summary: Commercial print quality
Review: After much research and after using inkjet printers for the prior year, we purchased the Sony photo printer to make digital snapshots of babies in our NICU. The quality is comparable to commercial snapshots, and of course, much faster. Families can take these home with them and have them to show to friends and family members. The dye emulsion color does not smear and the glossy character of the prints looks very professional. The only problem has been finding a reliable discount vender for the photo packs, which include the dye cartridge and print paper. They are available at full price, but finding quantities at discount is still difficult. Depite, this, the printer and syster are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Summary: ink sublimination printer
Review: Easy to use! The picture color is absolutely incredible! I have a Canon S330 and printed straight from Memory Card (you'll need the adapter) and the pictures are vibrant. I would guess that depending upon your camera resolution will determine the clarity of your pics. I have 2.1 pixels and the quality and clarity is incredible. There are several possibilities to print with this thing, so you re not limited. I love it. It's small enough to transport if you wanted to...then you can print out high quality pictures anywhere.

Summary: Sony Digital Photo Printer
Review: Few products have been as excellent as Sony's DPPSV55. I purchased mine about seven months ago and, after overcoming the chronic shortage of printing supplies, have really enjoyed the product. The prints are better than photolab quality, because I can enhance them with my photo programs. The installation was flawless on my three computers, running Win98SE, WinME, and WinXP. Some of the other reviewers complained of installation problems. Why, I don't know.

All the computers see the Sony as a removal HD, so I can actually load MP3 files to my Memory Sticks, Smart Media, or whatever, through the printer. No extra USB dongle! I also like being able to print photos without the computer.

Several on-line sources sell the 4X6 paper for about $[money] a 25-pack, much less than the MSRP of $[money].

I haven't been to a photo lab in ages! Thanks, Sony......

Summary: Great quality but colour levels are off a bit
Review: Great Unit, makes beautiful pix. Each time you print 25-30 pix on 3x5 or 4x6 you put in a new ribbon cartridge which comes with the paper. Couldn't be happier, paid a very reasonable price from VDO Specialities. Great outfit to do business with! They were concerned with some early misgivings I had and called me! Offered to refund and pay for return, said they were going to refund my money anyway because of the misunderstanding! Guy named Mike Walker, super to do busines with!Highly recommend VDO Specialties!!!!

Summary: Photo Lab quality prints from home!
Review: I had done a lot of research on the Sony digital photo printer, and some others, online and decided to go with the Sony DPP-SV55. I was excited to try it out because the reviews online raved about it, but I was totally blown away when I saw the quality of the first few prints I made. The glossy finish, dye sublimation richness, sharp color, and 4x6 borderless prints make them indistinguishable from prints you get from a Photo Lab. We have young kids and do a lot of scrapbooking, so the glossy finish images were essential, since ink jet images will fade after only two years.

Setup was very easy. In a matter of 10 minutes, I was plugged in and making prints. The paper packs make the process even easier because each pack comes with the film cartridge to print all the sheets from the pack. Loading the paper and cartridges is also very easy. The prints come out fast, and you don't have to wait for them to dry.

The software setup is easy, one quick installation from the included CD. It basically installs the print drivers for the printer. Once the printer is connected with a USB cable (not included), I was immediately able to print directly from the imaging software that came with my Sony D50 Cybershot camera. It also has a built in Creative Print lab program, but you have to hook up the printer to a TV to view and work with it. But the images are nice and you can do some cool things like print photo greeting cards and calendars.

There was no graininess in the prints at all, and the images came from my above mentioned camera (2.1 megapixels). All of the prints we have made turned out wonderful.

I suppose I should mention a couple of cons, but their really not a big deal: The unit does not come with a USB cable for some reason, even though it is required to print from a PC (It does include the video cable). Second, some of the colors on our prints (particularily reds) we a little off and overly bright, but all-in-all, we are very thrilled with the prints it makes.

Summary: DPP-SV55 PHOTO'S
Review: I have just purchased the DPP-SV55 printer and using the TV the prints are very professional, except for the matte finish. I have a question concerning printing photos that I have downloaded in to the computor. I have tried several times and with no results. Any ideas?? I have installed the installation CD for the printer and every thing seems fine, right down to the click finish. But when I select a picture and click PRINT nothing happens except that the printer icon disappears in a few seconds.. I am using Windows 98. Any suggestions would really be helpful And Thanks. RICH

Summary: Excellent photos depending on OS
Review: I installed the driver software on my Windows 2000 laptop and was immediately getting great prints -- one of the easiest Windows installations I've had. (Note that I'm just using this product to print from PCs, not directly from memory stick/card.)

I'm using "small format" prints (4"x3") because the source is my kids' JamCam digital camera which has sub-megapixel resolution (640x480 I think). I used Mozilla 1.3 to print from because it has a nice preview feature and image scaling. As it turns out I got glossy photos with beautiful color and no visible pixelation when printing from Windows 2000.

However, the prints I got from my iMac and from my Windows 98 PC were not quite as nice! In both cases close inspection yielded visible pixelation on the borders of subjects in the image. Furthermore, with Windows 98, the number of colors was reduced, with visible transitions from one shade to the next.

Perhaps the pixelation is simply because of the low-resolution source material, and that Windows 2000 has a better dithering algorithm for smoothing these pixels -- that is, maybe this won't affect you if you own a megapixel camera. But I can't explain the lack of color ranges on Windows 98.

Anyway, if you have Win2K, the prints are truly comparable to Kodak prints from an analog camera and the ease of use is excellent.

Summary: don't buy sony ever
Review: i just upgraded my operating system to windows xp and the printer didn't work.I need to get a new driver.I visited the web site and no driver for windows xp.I called customer service (and spent an hour and half hold ) and they said XP WASN'T IN THE MARKET WHEN THEY MADE THE PRINTER,SO THEY ONLY GUARANTEE THAT THE PRINTER WILL WORK WITH DRIVER THAT WAS ON THE MARKET THEN,THEY DONT HAVE TO MAKE NEW DRIVER FOR FUTURE OPERATING SYSTEMS. YOU MAY, HOWEVER, REPURCHASE THIS ITEM NEW SLIGHTLY MORE FEATURES AND XP COMPATABLE.so if you want to upgrade your system in next 3 to 6 months sony may not work with your upgrade and they won't do anything about it.Thats what sony's policy is.

Summary: Print directly from a digital camera?
Review: I own a Sony Mavica 3.3 Digital camera that utilizes a cd for photo storage. I bought this Sony DPPSV55 thinking it would print directly from the camera. It did not. I emailed Sony technical assistance and they stated the printer would not print out directly from this camera and they had no product that would print from cds; only floppy disks and Memory cards.

Very disappointing. I love the camera but I would like to have a portable photo printer that bypasses the use of a PC.
