Description:

A fine laser printer, the Lexmark Optra M410 is a bit taller than some other laser printers, but not quite as deep, which can be a real plus in a cramped workstation. The printer weighs over 40 pounds but is not difficult or unwieldy to move around. Even getting it out of the box was a breeze--the styrofoam packing blocks are sensibly designed and allow the printer to slide easily out of the carton without needing an extra set of hands.

Setup, including the installation of the software, took less than 10 minutes. We easily loaded the toner cartridge without having to refer to instructions; the loading is so simple that it would be hard to insert the cartridge into the printer incorrectly.

The printer's operator panel displays a summary of the printer's current status, whether it is simply ready to print or is out of paper. The paper drawer can hold up to 350 sheets. (An optional adapter increases the capacity to 850 sheets.) In our tests, the M410 effortlessly printed the promised 12 pages per minute. To test the M410's paper handling abilities, we purposely fed it folded, wrinkled, and torn sheets. We succeeded in creating a paper jam (as intended) and found that it was a cinch to rectify. Thanks to the well-designed front-opening doors, we were easily able to remove the jammed paper and were back underway in less than a minute. Should anything more serious occur, you'll benefit from the generous Lexmark warranty, in which they'll replace your printer the next day if it's defective.

In addition to printing sharp text, the Optra M410 delivers consistently good saturation of blacks and presents nice, clean, and even distribution on full-page photos. This printer is a good, dependable workhorse. --David Greenberger
