Rating: Summary: Bad experience at first, but turns out to be a workhorse Review: After printing just 500 pages on this printer, all I get is output with gray smears and background. The toner gets everywhere, and I have tried to clean this thing inside and out several times. They tell you to replace the toner when the background gets gray, but then you'd be replacing the cartridge every 500 pages. However, the printer has held up well over time, and it is very reliable.
Rating: Summary: Best buy for the price Review: After taking a really long look at the printers available in this price range, I bought the Brother HL-1450 and I must say I'm glad I did. It works exactly as advertised, and setup was both quick and easy. I've worked it pretty hard in the month I've had it, and haven't even had a paper jam. All in all, it's the best bang for the buck.
Rating: Summary: Does not work with Windows XP Review: Does not work under XP!!I had the HL-720 and I liked it so I bought the HL1450 expecting better or at least the same reliability and quality. I am disappointed. Overall, it is not better, but worse. The printer was working fine under Win 98 (except that when you wanted to print a one page document and it was set on duplex, it made you print the blank page 2 first and then you had to put the page in again and print page 1). Also, the "straight paper path" advantage they advertised and which worked well in HL-720 is lost--the HL-1450 jams a bit more, and takes up more space than the HL720. But the biggest problem: This printer does not work right under XP! i.e., the XP printer driver does NOT work--not the one that comes with XP nor the one I downloaded from the brother site as per the other reviewer. Here are some of the problems: 1. It does not print envelopes, especially when I set it to custom size. Only on inch of text on the left of the envelope appears--the rest of the text is missing! 2. Sometimes, I press print, the data light flashes but nothing happens! No printing! 3. The paper light keeps blinking though there is enough paper! Pressing the button, turning on and off over and over does not work. An hour passed without a single printed page. 4. When I do print preview and print the current page and go to the next page in the print preview and again print the current (which is now the next page), say to print double-sided, a paragraph of text from the end of the first page reappears again on the next page pushing the rest of the text down and dropping the last paragraph! There is a bug in pagination? 5. Duplex setting does not work half the time. The printer just ignores it and keeps printing one-sided. 6. Tech support--have not been able to get through to them yet. I hope they will read this and fix these bugs.
Rating: Summary: Heavy Network Use Review: Fantastic printer works fabulously and flawlessly. We print over 10,000 pages a week and have no problems. Have had this printer for over a year and bought it here on amazon. Works with XP and I know because I am running XP pro.
Rating: Summary: Brother 1450 Review: I am a busy guy so I will make it short. If you want a quality, printer which NEVER breaks down nor jams, print cartridges are VERY reasonable, and DOES print 15 ppm, buy this with a clear conscience.
Rating: Summary: Revised Review and a request for a "solution" Review: I bought this printer 8 months ago and have printed about 1200 sheets of paper. I am now getting a page full of gray toner smears on every sheet. I have not received a reply from Brother tech support and a week has gone by. The Brother website mentions that you may need to replace the toner when this happens. But, after only printing 1,200 sheets why should I need to buy a new cartridge at [price]? My five-star rating is now a one-star rating because of lousy tech support and a lousy product. ======= I had to narrow my selection between an HP 1200 and the Brother HL-1440 or 1450 and I'm glad I went with the Brother after reading all of the reviews. The only big difference between the two printers seems to be the resident fonts and memory. Basically, if you buy the 1440, you will need to buy additional memory. If you buy the 1450, you will need to buy memory as well. Memory for these printers is cheap, so if the price between the 2MB 1440 and 8MB 1450 is large, buy the 1440 and some extra memory. If the price spread is small, you might as well stick with the 1450. (...)
Rating: Summary: Printing Problem after 1 year Review: I bought this printer a little over a year ago (1 year warranty!), and it worked fine until recently. Now I am getting a gray backgound on my print-outs. E-mailing tech support, I hwas given cleaning steps, which I performed with no result. They then suggested replacing the toner, and if that didn't work, replacing the drum. I did try another toner, again with no effect. Before replacing the drum, I asked why that should be necessary when I had only used one 3,000 page toner and maybe half of a 6,000 page toner and the drum is suppose to last 20,000 pages. Their response was that the drum could only last 8,000 pages! Well, I did replace the drum...and it did no good also...

Rating: Summary: Worked very well while it lasted.... Review: I bought this printer for $300, so keep that in mind. After only 18 months and 2400 pages later, this printer breaks. It cannot pick up paper from the paper tray - I think a roller is broken. My one-year warranty is over, so the only thing I can do is to bring it to an authorized dealer to fix it. But these places charge $50-90 PER HOUR of labor, then add the cost of parts on top. So it is not worthwhile for me to fix this printer when I can buy a new one for the same amount of money.
I was personally surprised when this printer broke down so fast!! Although I have to admit that this printer worked flawlessly during those 18 months. No paper jams, no smearing, excellent print quality, no problems installing it on Windows XP. Even the manual feed worked so seemlessly that I was impressed. I was expecting this printer to last me countless years.
It's just unacceptable for a printer of this price to break down only after 2400 pages!!! So my lesson learned is to buy HP for laser printers.
Rating: Summary: Very Pleased Review: I have been very pleased with the quality of this printer. It has not jammed once in a year of moderate use. I was concerned a little while back when the pages starting getting smeared with ink. However, in my case it was not a printer defect but rather that the toner had gone low without my noticing. I had printed about 4500 pages on a 3000 page toner cartridge. Apparently what happens is that when the toner gets low, rather than fading, the printer pumps out more energy to get the remaining ink on the page, and this causes smearing. I thought I had a defective product but when I changed the cartridge, everything was working beautifully again. I think this printer offers very good value for the money, since it costs only half as much as the HP printers and seems to deliver equal quality performance.
