Summary: e-mail won't stay within margins
Review: I am about to return this printer because when I try to print e-mail (from 2 different e-mail programs) the printer cuts off the edges of the page - doesn't print with a wide enough margin. I have spent hours trying to figure out how to fix this, including about half an hour waiting for a tech support person from Brother who was no help at all. If you don't want to print all your e-mails in landscape mode, don't get this printer!

Summary: A very good entry level laser printer.
Review: Although sold as a refurb., my unit seemed brand new. I maxed out the memory with a 32 MB module, so graphics as well as text print fine. Works fine with my Macs running OS X at home. Fast and excellent quality output. Prints envelopes easily with hand fed front slot. Some express concerns about separate toner and drum replacement and associated costs, but drum life appears to be fairly long. I am quite satisfied with this unit at two months of home use with a few hundred sheets printed.

Summary: Good enough, but not perfect
Review: I bought this laser printer for light home use. I don't need color much and don't want to pay the high ink costs of inkjet printers. The HL-1440 does print VERY CLEARLY and quickly without much noise. This printer is best for text not graphics, as are most laser printers. Installation was very simple.

The printer is very good but has some small problems. 1) The driver is basic and a little glitchy. It sometimes resizes the margins established in MS Word and other documents. I sometimes need to adjust the margins in the driver itself. Can't get the "fit to page" setting to work. But I am always able to print documents correctly after adjustments. 2) Tech support is minimal. Web support is weak. Phone support is difficult to reach. 3) The paper tray is exposed in the rear. This design allows dust to settle on the blank pages. 4) Takes a lot of power when warming-up. Would be best to run it on a different electrical circuit than your PC. 5) Refurbished drum and toner have only 90% life of new. I purchased the refurbished model. Unfortunately the included drum and toner were refurbished also. 6) Needs more memory. The included 2Mb is not enough for maximum resolution. Fortunately additional memory is cheap to buy. I found 32MB on the web for $11 delivered.

Overall, I am happy with the printer. Just disappointed with the small issues because the printer could have been perfect.

Summary: Margin problem with Outlook -Brother HL-1435
Review: I just spent some time also trying to figure out how to get rid of the wide margin problem with a brand new Brother HL-1435 printer and finally figured it out. If you are in Outlook, I sugget not to configure your margins from the global settings that outlook has as you are looking at your list of emails on your inbox, sentItems, etc. To fix the wide margin, protrait, or landscape problem click in a specific email so as to open it up a different window, then from there click on File -> Page Setup -> Memo Style, and from there modified the desired margins and/or orientation.

Summary: Good basic laser printer.
Review: Purchased this printer refurbished....a bit hesitant, but everything works fine and there's a full one year warranty.
Printer is a bit deeper than normal due to the paper tray sticking out the back, so it makes a bit larger footprint than some other models.
The first page takes a few moments to get started, but once going the print speed is fine for this level of printer.
Product registration / information / set-up all are easy and seem to be great.
Memory is the only issue...the standard 2MB is fine for text, but if you're going to be printing a lot of black & white pictures or graphics, you would definately need to upgrade the memory. Not really an issue for me, though. It will still print the graphics, just at a lower resolution.
Otherwise, very happy w/ this purchase.

Summary: No cable, otherwise a good printer
Review: This is my first laser printer. It works fine at least the very first several days when I use it. It prints fast and clear. The only thing I am unhappy with is that it comes with no cable (no USB or parellel connection cable). I have to disconnect my scanner to use its USB cable (they are compatible A-B USB cable). I think I have to buy the cable separately, which would cost me at least $10.
I am not sure whether other printers have the same problem. But this really makes me disappointed.
