Rating: Summary: Surprisingly small (given the pictures) Review: Even though the printer is kind of tall, it takes up a surprisingly small amount of desktop space. Ideal for home use, and nicely priced (rivals higher end inkjets). I used to use an inkjet, but I realized that the amount that you spend on the replacement cartridges makes the inkjet cost much more in the long run than a laser printer (for the same amount of pages printed). In short, I like this printer. Why only 4 stars then? Well, I think HP printers are more sturdily built than this one. However, HP Laserjets usually get up to ~$400. The sweet price on this one allows me to give it the high rating.
Rating: Summary: Great Little Laser Review: Had medium to low expectations of this printer because of the price, but gave it a shot anyway. WOW! Ubelievable quality and speed for such a small price and a small footprint to boot! FYI I Don't know what problems the other user was having, but I couldn't print at all with one old cable I had around here at first, but once I plugged in a different cable all was up and running fine. Only slight negative is noticeable banding on photos but this may differ from one unit to the next - plus depending on what you use it for this could be overlooked, again because this printer is SO INEXPENSIVE! Also, text and line work is super, super sharp. The speed and convenience is so far superior to inkjet it isn't even funny (plus no smearing!), and at this price you can afford to have it for all your B&W work, and have a decent ink jet with its messy, pricey inks and special papers for when you want/need to do color.
Rating: Summary: Excellent printer at a great price -- but not for Windows XP Review: I bought this laser printer within the past 6 months and was very pleased with it. It prints in reasonable time (much, much faster than the ink jets I'd always had before) and with excellent quality. Installation took a little bit of effort on one of my computers, but was a snap on another. One drawback is that it doesn't have a USB port, so you have to connect with a parallel cable. (Make sure to order one with it because it does not include one.) The definite negative to this printer -- and it could be a big one -- is the limitation of its software. Just as installation can sometimes be difficult, due to software issues, this printer DOES NOT work with WindowsXP. Minolta will tell you otherwise (they claim the Win2000 drivers work) but they are mistaken. I tried all the various fixes they suggested, but no dice. This printer relies on part of the old Win95 software to work, and just isn't compatible with WinXP. So, the bottom line is this: if you're not running WinXP and don't plan to, this is a terrific printer and I recommend it to you very highly. But if you run WinXP, or think you might, you do not want this model.
Rating: Summary: Good wth some problems, solved by Minolta Review: I bought this print a while back and itnitially had no problems with it. However, I recently upgraded to Windows XP from ME. There is no working driver for XP. The website says to download and use the windows 2000 driver, but this did not work. I am left with a printer that is only a large paperweight. Customer service says they don't know when they will have a driver for XP. ************ Too update, I spoke with minota, they quickly, ie overnight mailed a new model 1100 (similar, upgrade) to me. This does work well with XP. I was amazed by the service I got from Minolta, and now 100% recommend buying this printer. (unless you use XP. They say the driver for NT will power the printer in XP, but it did not work for me)
Rating: Summary: A Good Printer- if you can get it to install Review: I bought two of these for my small business office. One installed and works fine, but I couldn't get the installation software to run at all on the other machine (a relatively new Dell). Apparently there is a problem with the GDI Interface and if you have other printer drivers installed, the software is very picky about the order these drivers are loaded. The Minolta tech support people said that deleting my other printer drivers and reloading them after I install the Minolta driver might work, but they would investigate the problem and call me back. Ten days later- they haven't. Tells you something about their customer support I guess. Rather than delete and reinstall four other printers (which may not have solved the problem), I chose to send this one back. My advice is that this printer is just not worth the trouble, unless you are using it as you only, stand alone printer.
Rating: Summary: The BEST laser printer for the money! Review: I had a Panasonic Laser printer for several years that finally gave up. I tried to find another Panasonic to no avail. I read some reviews about this Minolta and decided to give it a try. WOW it's a great printer. My old one printer took about 2 minutes to warm up and print and the output was 3 or 4 pages a minute. The Minolta takes about 10 seconds to warm up and put out about 6 PPM. Crisp, clean prints everytime. I really like the secondary tray too. I can put envelopes in without taking the rest of the paper out.
Rating: Summary: Good printer, but won't work with Windows 2000 (or XP !!!) Review: I had this printer for about 2 years and had absolutely no problems with it. I used it with an AMD Athlon cpu and Windows 2000 OS.
Unfortunately its Win2K driver is NOT compatible with Service Pack 4. As soon as you send anything to it Windows 2000 gets a BSD (blue screen of death) and reboots. Your only option is to uninstall SP4 (or don't install it if you haven't yet). Being that its a discontinued model I doubt Minolta will bother to release a new driver. I believe it still works with XP though.
Other than that its a very good printer.
**UPDATE 09/28/04**
Contrary to my above comments this printer WON'T work with Windows XP either! It just gives a COVER OPEN error. Fortunately Minolta allowed me to exchange it for a 1250W model which works fine with XP. Nice of them, considering that I bought it from a 3rd party vendor.
So unless you plan on only ever using Windows 98 DON'T buy an 1100L!

Rating: Summary: OK .. but....no rebate Review: I have been waiting for six months for my rebate check. No response from Minolta. The printer driver under Win 2000 is slow to start. There is a definate hesitation before the print out (not like my Xerox) and the system literally freezes for a couple of seconds. Update: The driver can literally freeze and fail...it often suggests that the 'cover is open' when it is not. You must turn off the printer and restart it. There are better inexpensive laser printers, such as the Samsung. This unit is an example of good hardware made bad by terrible drivers and support. And no, I never did receive my rebate.
Rating: Summary: Ignore that person Review: I just got this printer and I have to say it works really well. The only reason it does not get 5 stars is because it does not come with Windows 2000 drivers (although it can be downloaded off the QMS webpage), other than that the machine is perfect. Its small, prints really fast, is quiet, pleasing to the eye and is a lot cheaper than the other printers in its class. And if it were truly that bad I don't know why ZDNet, WinMag, and other PC magazines give it awards.
