Summary: I like it!!!
Review: I've only run about a half dozen pages through my brand new Superscript 1400 so far, but it's great. I'm hooked up to a Mac iBook, using USB, with absolutely no problems. My only complaint is that the printer has an audible hum when it is turned on, so I will keep it turned off except when I need it; that is the only reason why I did not give it 5 stars. I can't figure out how the paper level indicator works, so I'll call tech support (free) once they open for business hours. It'll be great to get the second year of tech support for free by registering within 30 days.

The very best feature is that it will print the same pages that I used on my old Epson inkjet. I had tried an Epson laser printer as well as a Xerox laser printer (at Kinkos), and they both scrambled my spacing and line blanks very badly when the document was done in the New York font. (Xerox was much better than Epson.) My NEC 1400 has no problem with New York font, so I'm thrilled to not have to re-do dozens of forms in a different kind of font to please a printer.

I had foolishly believed a local chain office supply store who told me I'd have the printer delivered the next day, so I didn't buy it from Amazon. I did order a scanner from Amazon, almost a week later, and it arrived the same day as that so-called next day delivery. That has convinced me that from now on I order only from Amazon. And I love this review forum!!

Summary: Great value
Review: Occasional jams and communication problems printing from the internet (for which you simply turn the printer off and back on) but generally, operation has been pretty smooth for the last several months I've owned this item. The rebate process was timely from NEC, the quality is good enough for camera-ready copy for offset and the machine as a whole is recommendable for single person use in a home office. For duplex (booklet) legal-size printing, you really need to get the optional paper tray.

Summary: Great Printer
Review: Printer is fast and very quiet, with excellent resolution. Have been using it extensively and have had no problems. Others had made remarks about: 1) too long to print first page; mine prints in a matter of a few seconds. 2) paper jams; I've had no problems at all, so it must be the paper they were using. 3) no cable is included; many printers do not include the cable, this is no surprise. For the price, this is one of the best printers you can buy. My old NEC Supercript 860 is still going strong. These are solid, dependable printers. Sure, toner cartrigdes are impossible to find in stores, but simply order them on-line. Plus, the NEC toner cartridges tend to last longer. Has a nice look, and a small footprint for a fast printer. Excellent buy.

Summary: incompatibility with software
Review: Sadly, this printer would not work with specialized legal software that is dos based. After several hours working with the support tech at the software company and NEC support it was determined by both that this computer could not print from this software. We have been using an NEC SuperScript 660i very successfully and attempted to upgrade to the 1400 and retire the 660i. For other programs it is probably wonderful.

Summary: The printer comes with no parallel or USB cable
Review: The printer finally arrived and I found it have no cable coming with it. What further surprises me is that the user manual did not come too. The outer package came also pretty damaged, making me suspecting that it is a refurbished item.

It is a bad experience, and I did not expect something like this from NEC.

Summary: paper jams, paper jams, paper jams, paper jams, paper jams!!
Review: The printing speed and print quality for this printer is great, however this printer frequently jams. I would say about one in ten sheets jam up. Might be the type of paper I'm using but the same paper does not jam in my old HP printer.

What good is fast printing speeds if you have to clear the machine every two minutes?

Summary: Excellect Choice For Speed and Quaility
Review: This is an awesome printer. Very easy to set up. Technical support was GREAT. I had to use it on the first day. I could talk to someone within a minute or two. Do not use the USB connections. They are having some problems with that. I was getting an error, to add paper to the tray and it wouldn't let me print. When I switched to the parallel port connection everything went fine.

Print speed and quality is excellent. I previous owned an HP 1100, and it was good, but not for the price. This printer was cheaper and it prints faster and better. One draw back is that it takes 15-20 seconds to print the first page. So far paper feeds straight, controls are easy to use. They also have a printer monitor that notifies you if something may be wrong with your connection or something else.

The type of plastic used with the paper tray seems cheap, but it does the job. The plastic guides in the paper tray seem real cheap. Each time I move them I think it going to break. You need to squeeze the lever and lift up slightly and then move.

For a tad over $300, this is a winner. With excellent speed and quality that you can't go wrong with.

Summary: Good Home Office/School Printer
Review: This printer should be commended for its price and quality concerning the equipment. However, this printer is lacking a USB or serial cable upon purchasing this printer. Admittedly, $20 is not too much for either cable, but at least NEC should provide one or the other. The device responds quietly and relatively efficently. Compared to HP printers, it is a very comparable printer. The toner is quite cheap as well, as compared to Hewlett Packard's (which I've seen range into $100-$150). Overall though, I have been impressed with the printer. No printer jams, no slow response times upon starting up or printing...the only thing that is lacking is the improved dpi for the Macintosh side, rather than the Windows side.

Summary: works well most of time
Review: This printer works well for regular printing jobs. I was a bit concerned first because various plastic parts are very flimsy (compared to other printers, such as HP) and looked easily breakable. However, so far it is working fine for about two years. A couple of problems: I like to use back of used papers for printing drafts and less important documents. This printer has hard time picking up used sheets separately from the regular tray. I could never figure out how to use the manual feed tray. The printer did not come with a decent manual.

Summary: NEC 1400 Has No Driver For MS Millenium
Review: Tonight I got my new NEC SuperScript 1400 Printer. However, after connecting it to a new computer, and using the CD to install a driver, the printer just prints a black band along the left margin of the paper (and no text). Why? After three hours waiting and talking with tech support at NEC, my computer manufacturer, and again at NEC, I learned that NEC does not have a driver to make the printer work with Microsoft Windows Millennium.

NEC and Amazon.com should disclose that NEC SS 1400 PRINTER WILL NOT OPERATE WITH COMPUTERS THAT USE THE WINDOWS MILLENNIUM OPERATING SYSTEM. It would save everyone time. Now, I have to ship the printer back to Amazon.

Amazon and NEC should also mention that neither Office Depot nor Staples carries the toner cartridges.
