Summary: Awesome printer
Review: After installing driver on the CD that came with the printer, I was able to print my documents without any problem. The resolution is clear and crisp. Local stores in my area (circuit city and Staples) do not carry the toner cartriges for this printer, but thanks to the internet, you can buy them online. Overall, I am happy with it, so far anyway.

Summary: Incredibly Great Printer!
Review: After reading several reviews of the NEC 1400, I decided toshop around for the best buy. I bought it...and it is a tremendousbargain. Fabulous printer; sharp and clear! It's versatile and very adaptable. I don't think there's another laser printer on the market that can perform this many tasks at this price. Get one! You won't regret it.

Summary: Good printer - multipurpose tray is lame
Review: Although I've found this to be a good printer, one of the features I specifically bought it for was the drop down multi-purpose tray. I wanted to have regular paper in the main tray and be able to use specialty paper in the MPT. This printer's multi-purpose tray will only take 1 sheet at a time. How lame is that? One sheet! Apparantly, there is a 1450 model of this printer that has a standard MPT that holds 100 sheets. If you have interest in the multiple paper trays, stay away from this model.

Summary: Great Bargain
Review: For the price, this has been a worthwhile investment. It only takes a few seconds to warm up in power-saving mode, and it is very fast with text or graphics. The high capacity toner cartridges make it very economical for large amounts of printing (between manuscripts and college papers I have printed about 3,000 pages since purchase). The only reasons I didn't rate this a 5 are 1) the manual feed can be a little tricky, 2) I have had paper jams when filling the paper tray to capacity (but none if I load it a little light) and 3) I couldn't get it to work with a parallel cable. After reading another user's review, I avoided using the USB connector. NEC's help desk was very accessible, but was unable to fix the problem with the LPT1 connection. On their advice, I tried a USB cable and was up and running with no problems.

Summary: Need help setting up on WinME
Review: Great printer for the money when I had Win98. I just switched to WinME box and don't know what to do to get it to run. If anyone can help, I am in need. I went to the NEC website and downloaded the recommended Plug and Play driver, but, it doesn't install itself, WinME doesn't help. I'm sure there's something I don't know to get this running.

Best place I can find to get toner cartridge is from Amazon. Lack of support is probably the weakest link. A quick basic monochrome laser this has filled the bill.

Summary: Great printer at great price
Review: great printer. no doubt. The guy who's complaining that he can't print with Windows ME is just plain wrong... just download the driver form nectech.com's website. You can also buy extra toner from nectech.com for just 79 dollars.

Summary: works well most of time
Review: I bought this printer back in Dec 2000 for use at home, and it's been a great experience. I bought the 3 year extended warranty for $..., and I had to use it once early on. NEC has excellent after-sales support. They cross-shipped me a new unit when mine broke down so I didn't have to scramble around for a box to ship it. I have used technical support, and they answered the phone within 2 minutes. Technical support advice was accurate and courteous. The support website is also easy to use and contains all the downloads and documentation you need.

I printed my Ph.D. thesis on this printer, and it turned out perfect. The text quality is excellent, but not as good as the more expensive (>$1000) HP printers that I use at school.

You can't upgrade the memory or internal software (this printer will never be able to do Postscript), but for the home user, I think it's more than adequte. I also think the printer is attractively designed compared to its competition from Brother. The only thing I wish it had was an auto-duplex to print on both sides of the paper to save our trees.

Highly recommended for the budget user!
