Rating: Summary: Fine for light printing, otherwise stay away!!! Review: several of these have been setup in my office and at least half have been repaired or replaced...drums and toner go quickly, for light home printing should be ok, if youre looking for a business machine, stay away from brother printers, look for an HP
Rating: Summary: Works well with either Mandrake or Debian Linux (Knoppix ) Review: Since this printer was very unreliable for me under any version of windows, I was decided to try it under Linux with hope it would work. To my surprise, both distros of Linux I use recognized it immediately and installed drivers. It has been working perfectly as a network printer for my network ever since. Any other Linux or OSX machine on the network finds this printer automatically with no assistance. Very cool.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding & Easy To Operate Laser Printer Review: The Brother HL-1240 is one of a kind in that it is easy to set up, easy to install drivers and easy to operate. I took it right out of the box, installed the toner and drum easily, hooked it up to my USB port, followed the easy to understand instructions on installing drivers, and then started printing. I also use a Canon Multifunction printer for color and other applications which is connected to a parallel port. So, in effect, I have two printers operating with my HP computer without any special accessories or switches. I just select the printer I want every time I print and I am good to go. The print quality is excellent and the toner cartridges are reasonably priced. Cartridges that can print 6,000 copies are less than $80 and are highly recommended over the alternate less than $50 cartridge that only prints 3,000 copies. I use this printer for a 24-page newsletter that I print on a quarterly basis and found it excellent in clarity and print quality for my required masters. The best part of this printer is the price. If I was the editor of one of those consumer or computer magazines, I would declare the Brother HL-1240 a "best buy."
Rating: Summary: Brother HL-1240 Laser Printer Review: The reviews other owners have submitted greatly helped in the decision to purchase this laser printer over the Xerox P8. I have been using it the past week, and it is every bit as good as the HP 2100 which costs approx. $700.Monkey proof instillation procedures...highly recommend purchasing this printer.
Rating: Summary: Manage Your Expectations Review: This is a good, inexpensive printer with a lot of features (legal/letter cartridge, and honest 12 ppm speed) normally found only in more expensive models. It handles plain text just fine, although the resolution is a bit less crisp than other lasers I have owned. The big problem is the manual feed slot. It's virtually impossible to get an envelope or pre-printed letterhead perfectly straight in it, and it flat-out balks at laser labels. (Yesterday, I spent an hour picking out bits of label that jammed.) It also, inexplicably, lacks an insertion tray that could make insertion easier and require less "baby-sitting." You'll enjoy this printer for light-to-moderate home or office use so long as you don't demand too much from it. But my next printer will be a Lexmark or an HP.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Printer! Review: This is a very fine printer! I spent several months researching printers in my price range/feature list, and this printer constantly came out on top. I actually own the HL-1250, which is identical but has a little bit more RAM. The printer is easy to set up - from box to printing was about 15 minutes. Of course, after that I went back to read the documentation :) The printer is fast. It has a nice power-save mode. With everything being power-aware, I can turn my whole system on with one keyboard button. I did not measure time from sleep to print, but it was reasonable, under a minute.
Rating: Summary: WARNING! Review: This is a warning to all Macintosh users considering buying this printer! The hardware for this printer is excellent for the money, but is backed by TERRIBLE software. After installing the driver software, and after being disappointed that it did NOT support desktop printing, and barely worked with the Chooser, I found that the driver software would constantly cause the computer to crash, even with only the base extension set for MacOS 9 loaded. After contacting Brother tech support on multiple occasions, they were unable to explain why this was happening. Disgusted by the fact that their software was so poorly tested as to crash with only MacOS extensions loaded, and the lack of any kind of software tech support, I had no choice but to return the printer. Shortly after, I purchased a comparable replacement which has been nothing but a pleasure to use, and has very good software to back it up: the NEC SuperScript 1400. I highly recommend the NEC SuperScript 1400 as an alternative to any Mac users considering buying the Brother HL-1240. If you do buy the HL-1240, you will be in for nothing but trouble.
Rating: Summary: Small speedy printer Review: This is an excellent little printer. The speed and quality are quite good. It deserved all of the awards it has received. However, there isn't much of an instruction manual, but the driver CD is very good. Note that it is a "light-weight" printer and would not survive a typical day at the office for very long with users who would not handle it lightly. If you need a printer that can handle user abuse, look towards the HP series.
Rating: Summary: Worth a lot more Review: This is my favorite little printer. I bought one for my office as a network printer (they actually make a similar model with a built-in hub) and have 5 work-stations connected to it. With a volume of 4,000 printed forms per month, it has performed flawlessly for over a year. We've replaced the high-yield toner every 2 months or so ($160), and we are on the 2nd drum replacement unit ($240), but quality remains excellent, speed is very good, noise is low, and no downtime has been needed except for routine cleaning. I have 2 of these at home now, and they likewise perform just great.
Rating: Summary: It broke, so I bought a Samsung for less Review: Too big, too clunky, and it broke, so I bought a Samsung.
