Rating: Summary: Great overall printer for the price Review: We've been using the ML-1430 for three months now and absolutely love it. It's a great overall printer, excellent print quality even in Toner Saver mode (slightly lighter than regular mode). The toner drum supplied with the printer lasts about 1000 pages or so - even with the Toner Saver mode turned on. This is hooked up to work with three PC's on a wireless network. (XP, Win98, Win2K). Setup was straightforward. All drivers, manuals etc are available on www.samsungusa.com. Issues: The buffer is small - 8 MB and is not upgradeable. Poses a problem while printing large pdf documents - takes a while to spool to the printer. No duplex printing! Labels and envelopes can be a challenge with this printer. Envelopes sometimes get stuck. Overall: Great little laser printer for home office use. Small footprint, fairly quiet operation, great print quality, economical - about 3 c a page. Would not hesitate recommending this outstanding printer.
Rating: Summary: Buy this Printer! Review: After years of suffering through expensive ink jet replacement costs, fuzzy print, and an early demise of several ink jet printers; we finally upgraded to this laser. As other reviewers have mentioned, setup is a breeze. A quick-start guide right out of the box has you up in running in a few minutes. Print quality is excellent and we have not had anything less than perfect performance in 3-4 months use. A few things that you should know... If the printer is in standby mode, it takes a few seconds to "wake up" and begin printing. This printer a bit louder than higher priced Laser printers. However, when weighing the very affordable price and the quality of the output, this is a wonderful choice for a home or small business printer
Rating: Summary: Don't believe the bad reviews Review: Who are these people who are giving this printer bad reviews? Six months ago I bought two ML-1430s, at a price of under $200 each. I bought one for myself, and one for my sister, who is very smart, just not a "computer person." We have both been absolutely beyond pleased. SET UP: It took my sister less that 5 min. to set hers up by herself, and as I said, she knows very little about the technical aspects of computers. I am running mine on my home wireless network. No problems with the setup or the connection. PRINT QUALITY: I print a lot of b/w documents from PageMaker and MS Word. I've been a graphic designer for 15 years, so I know what a good printout should look like. This printer is fine for everyday home use. If you want crisp, superfine graphic quality on glossy paper, go to Kinko's and pay for it, because they have the printer that costs $20,000. For $200, the ML-1430 will meet 99% of you b/w printing needs. TONER CARTRIDGE: I'm still on the "starter cartridge" that came with the printer six months ago. Replacement cartridges (the full-meal deal, not the starter) can be had for $50-$60. RELIABILITY: Never had a paper jam. Envelopes are a snap (if you remember to flip the switch so that the envelope outputs to the front of the printer, rather than the usual top output). Yes, it does take the printer 30 seconds to warm up when you haven't printed anything for a while, but if you can't wait 30 seconds for a laser printer to warm up, you have issues. Regarding the reviews here that say the printer burns up after a couple weeks and/or just stops working, all I can say is, "Huh?" Either Samsung made a bipolar batch of printers - a bunch of really good ones and a bunch of really evil ones made IN THE SAME FACTORY, or these people are just mistreating their machines. I don't know. I have had zero problems. I say, buy it.
Rating: Summary: The Era of the Disposable Laser Printer Review: The GOOD: -Print quality is excellent for both text and graphics . . . even compared with ... HP brand networked laser printers. Note that I'm making this comparison running the Samsung in "Toner Saver" mode. -Easy to set up, including USB and printer drivers. -Toner Save mode . . . supposedly saves toner, and output quality is not degraded significantly. -FAST The BAD: -8MB of RAM (and this is NOT upgradable) If you print a lot of graphics, you might want to choose some other printer. Note that the ML-1450 comes with only half as much RAM as the ML-1430. . . but you can add an EDO SIMM to the 1450 to bump it up as high as 68MB! So if you print graphics, the 1450 would be worth the extra money. -Will probably need to be replaced at roughly 50,000 pages printed. For more information, read the 'troubleshooting' section of the owner's manual, page 7.5 -Does not include a FULL toner cartridge. Samsung isn't the only manufacturer that pulls this stunt. The 'starter' toner cartridge is only about 1/3 full, apparently. -No printed user manual. Reading the manual on the computer screen is a pain. Printing the manual is an option, but it will use a significant percentage of your "starter" toner cartridge. -Ugly promo sticker on front of printer can NOT be removed without leaving a horrible gluey mess! -No "sleep mode" indication (How do you tell it's sleeping when it looks like it's still on? Lights don't turn off, change color . . . or even dim when it sleeps.) Considering the price, I'd have to say this is an excellent value in a laser printer. You have to think of it as a throw-away though. Evaluating it as a long-term workhorse, I'd have to give it 3 stars, at best. But as color laser printers are quickly becoming affordable, you probably won't need this printer to last very long anyway. In the meantime, it is a GREAT printer, with a few minor problems. So I gave it four stars. I think this would be perfect for the average home user who uses the Internet, basic office applications . . . and needs to print a few resumes occasionally.
Rating: Summary: Cheap and good! Review: I bought this a year ago and it has been working nicely since then. I don't use the printer much and that's why I decided to buy a laser over ink (ink printers dry up even if you don't use them). I have heard the toner is expensive but I guess if one is a casual user, it becomes much cheaper compared to ink printers. What I like is that you can control the normal/ink saving mode from the top of the machine and do not need to adjust it through the software. I use an HP printer at work and it is always automatically set on the highest quality (=using more ink). If you want to save the toner on the HP, you need to pick the toner-saving mode every time you print, whereas on the Samsung you do it once and it is alway the way you want it. I have had this machine on the ink-saving mode and the printquality is just as good. I have two computers, a mac (OSX) and a PC (XP). It is slow on the mac but quite fast on PC. I guess it has to do with the driver setting. The printer sounds some upon starting but becomes much more quite after a couple of minutes. The sound doesn't bother me, though.
Rating: Summary: 1.5+ years and going strong Review: I have abused this printer for about 1.5+ years. It is connected to a router to enable sharing on my home office LAN, and it keeps cranking away. Great value for the money. Sharp printouts in the 600dpi mode. I like the overall lower cost per page of a laser printer, and the fact that the 'ink' doesn't run dry unlike inkjet cartridges.
Rating: Summary: Read this before you read bad reviews Review: I made a lot of searching and evaluations before I bought samsung ML 1430 printer. And I bought it around Nov, 2002. After a year, it is still running like a charm AFTER PRINTING out 3 online books and at least 10 software documentation manuals. Anyway, here are SOME TIPS about this printer. A lot of people who write bad reviews complain about 2 things: paper jams and expensive replacement cartridges. I have address both problems below. Paper jam can occur (although I have never experienced it) with this printer. It jams paper because people don't know how to handle paper insertion (after printing 1st page out). Here is a scanerio. Say, you are reusing the 2nd blank page of a paper (1st page already contained prints. Yes, I am cheap) or you are reloading a new set of papers into existing set which is already loaded on the printer. YOU DON'T simply put new paper along with existing set. If you do, it will jam you out. You MUST empty out existing papers, combine and reorganize with new papers, and reload the set. For cartridge cost problem, my answer is you DON't buy a new cartridge. Go to ebay and buy cartridge refill bottles. There are a lot of vendors who sell them. Each refill bottle costs about 4-6 dollars. You can buy refill bottles design to fill these printer models (not a complete list): ML 1210, ML 1430. When you do the refilling, there is a small hole covered with a small black cap(hard to determine that it is a cap at first time) on one shorter side of the cartridge. Open carefully and fill in new toner dust. Becareful not to expose the drum directly to the light(dont' do it under bright light). That's it. I hope you will fall in love with this printer. :-)
Rating: Summary: unhappy camper Review: AT first, I was pretty happy with this printer, but it stopped working less than a year after I purchased it. Another thing I didn't like was the cost of the printer cartridges...nearly $80. Moreover, the cartridges don't last very long, even with the toner saver. In all, I was pretty unhappy with Samsung printers. Even though Samsung replaced the printer with a new similar model, I'm not expecting my replacement to last or perform for very long.
Rating: Summary: LASTED 9 MONTHS Review: I had this one 9 months and it blew up Now i know why. When they are low on ink you have to replace them immediately. I went through 2 Samsungs ina year without realizing this. They take a long time to warm up also The size is great and i like the front loading for paper so i cna see what I am doing while sitting down. The toner is horribly expensive and you dont get the amount they say If you use the device to save toner you cant read the page. I wanted to let anyone know that you have to keep your eye on the ink because ther eis no warning you need ink
Rating: Summary: Inexpensive laser printer with good quality Review: It is not a top of the line printer but it does job for the price very well. The printing quality is good and it is quite fast. Having said this I must mention that it is fast after the delay: there is a delay before first page starts to print. The rest of the job will be printed very fast. I believe it has something to do with power saving. But in any case this is the only shortcoming and I can live with it.
