Rating: Summary: Best printer for the money Review: This printer is one of the best computer purchases I have ever made. I am a teenager and use it with my laptop for school papers and college applications. It speeds through any document at close to the advertised speed and with amazing quality. It handles envelopes and labels well through the front feeder and holds a lot of paper in the paper tray. I have noticed some imagine quality issues with a document that is predominatly images, so if you print a lot of images, my recomendation would be to go with an ink jet printer for best results. If you are doing mostly text with occassional graphics, choose this printer, it is a great value for the money and lives up to its ratings.
Rating: Summary: Printer Well Worth the Price Review: This is the cheapest laser printer I have ever come across (after 40% off mail-in rebate...always shop around and check for rebates). Anyway, I needed a laser printer for my house, so I did some research. 600 x 600 dpi (dots per inch) is good enough for my needs. Type and vector (drawings) comes out clean and sharp. Photos are so-so but that's what you get for that dpi. I have it set to print on my Mac G3 (OSX). I tried it out on our PC (Windows XP) too and it's fine. Everything works just fine. I did read reviews on Amazon about having to download the OSX driver... I did and had no problems whatsoever. (No matter what you always should check for drivers from the company's website because they are most current). The best thing about this printer is the paper tray. The last printer I had was a Brother and it did not have a paper tray. Boy, did that get really annoying. Paper never feed right and always got stuck! The tray is so great! Just stick a whole stack of paper in the tray and never have to think about it! This printer is small and has little rubber feet. I have had no problems with it sliding around. You do have to get a usb cord for it. But I just take the usb cord off my scanner and stick it in the printer. I have have only had this printer for 2 weeks or so, but I think it's great.
Rating: Summary: It even makes an ugly heavy paperweight Review: Lots of cons on this cheap brand printer, no wonder it sells for "peanuts." You get what you pay for. 1. Printing speed nowhere close to the 17ppm claimed. More like 10ppm. And VERY NOISY! Unnerving kind of noisy. 2. Toner is defective. I went through two cartridges and both gave "low toner" warning after just 20-30 pages. I had a similar problem with an HP in my office. I heard someone else with this one who also has the same warning all the time. 3. Low resolution. Max is 600x600. I went to a couple local stores and found Okidata models for slightly more money but resolution as high as 1200x2400. You'll see the difference when you print on high quality paper. 4. Poor tech support. Called support about the warning 7 times before getting connected. Technician spoke with heavy accent. He tried to be courterous but was no help because we couldn't communicate. 5. [SO] ugly.
Rating: Summary: Cheap and practical Review: If you are in the market for a relatively cheap and decsent laser printer than this is the one. I just got my own not too long ago and...I don't think there is a better bang for the buck on the market currently. It prints fast and with good quality for everyday "normal" printing.
Rating: Summary: Lousy support for Mac OS X Review: I bought this product because of the favorable reviews and excellent price. However, I am sorely disappointed with the driver for Mac OS X 10.2 (which, incidentally, did not come with the printer, but had to be downloaded from Samsung's web site). If you're a Mac OS X user, forget anything beyond very basic printing. The drivers are no more than Beta versions. There is absolutely no support for manual feed (one of the reasons I bought this printer was to print envelopes, which is impossible without manual feed). Other features are missing from the driver. I've had the printer for a couple of months now, and in all other ways is excellent (apart from being unnecessarily noisy). But the lack of a good driver for the Mac is unforgiveable, especially when Samsung touts this product as OS X compatible.
Rating: Summary: Samsung ML-1710 Review & OSX Review: I bought one of these printers for use under OSX and agree that the CD-ROM driver is useless. I managed to track down the OSX drivers on the website. It was definitely very hard to find, and I seemed to have trouble getting to the same cite repeatedly, hence I include the above address. Graphics quality was so-so, some definite banding in dark areas, but otherwise good for print. GIMP-Print (CUPS) does not support yet.
Rating: Summary: Great DEAL! Review: I tried to order this online from Office Depot but it said they were out of stock. I called their Customer Service number and they said there were some available to pick up at the local store. I got the printer for the 79.23 169.23- 20 coupon - 70 rebate. So i picked up the printer after work and installed it in less than 2 minutes. It works great and was impressed by the ease and quality of the product. If anyone out there is looking for an inexpensive laser printer.. this is the one to get!
Rating: Summary: Pretty good deal! Review: The Samsung ML-1710 Laser Printer is an excellent deal: generally, text and graphics are very sharp and crisp. And the compact size makes it ideal for even the smallest home office. Only gripe: after good initial results in the "toner save" mode, the print is now just simply to light to continue in this mode. Same is true if you print on envelopes, even with "toner save" off. Overall, though, this is a great printer that won't disappoint.
Rating: Summary: MISSING INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAC OS X USERS FOR THIS PRINTER Review: 1. GOOD ORDER EXPERIENCE WITH AMAZON.COM I shopped for printers for weeks and picked this after it got an 8/10 review from CNET Product Reviews. It was an "Editor's Choice". I decided to order from Amazon because of the [$$$] rebate offered by Samsung if you do so. I received my order only 6 calendar days after putting in an online order at Amazon. This was much faster than the promised time; plus shipping was free. 2. YOU HAVE TO BUY A USB CABLE The USB cable which you have to also order when you buy this printer was shipped separately by Amazon, but arrived on the same day as the printer which was nice. I selected the Belkin USB cable 6 ft for [$$$], but recommend a longer cable - 6 ft sounds like a lot but it isn't. I have a Mac Powerbook G4 (12 inch) which I purchased recently, running on Mac OS x 10.2. If you have a late model Mac, you should know that the CD-ROM that comes with this printer DOES NOT work. It only supports OS 9. The instruction manual also DOES NOT tell you what to do if you have OS X. 3. Here are the MISSING INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAC OS X USERS: (This is to save you the 3.5 hrs it took me to configure my printer and find the right driver.) 1. Ignore the CD-ROM and Instruction Manual that came in the printer's box. (If you attempt to install the CD-ROM's driver, your Mac will not recognize the driver as having been installed even though the installer will say installation is complete). 2. The driver for OS 10.2 is on the Web. Go to [the Samsung site] and click on the "Printer" link on the left menu. 3. Nothing will appear on the web page (it will be blank), but a sub-menu will appear on the left, click "Laser". 4. Select ML 1710. It will show 3 types of Mac drivers to download, according to the version of OS you have. 5. Only download one of the 3 types - the one for Mac OS X 10.2 (if that is your version). Do not download the other types for other Mac versions. 6. If your download doesn't work using Apple Safari browser, switch to Internet Explorer browser and try again. It should not take more than ONE minute to download. If the page freezes, log out and log back in. Seems simple enough, but a lot of time could have been saved if these above steps were actually LISTED somewhere in the instructions in the box. I had to figure it out rather painfully by piecing together scattered clues. Once the above was done, my Mac recognized the printer pretty easily and I had no problems. Other finicky things: (a) the printer is very light so it tends to skid if you are opening trays, installing catridges, etc. It feels like it is made of light, cheap plastic, but I guess that is forgivable given the price. (You can correct the skid by sticking plastic anti-skid stickers from the hardware store on the base). (b) the printer makes a rather loud hum starting up - much louder than expected. It sounds like a small hand-held vacuum, and looks generally like a humidifier.
Rating: Summary: Good Value Review: Overall, am very satisfied with the purchase. --Good value, especially with [the] rebate from compusa. (usb cable was ...extra) --17ppm--nifty fast --printout quality is very good. very high quality --very compact --took me 3 minutes to set, and I am a techno-phobe --when you first initiate printing, it rumbles like a tank. at first, i was concerned about the rumbling, but it quiets down after after printing is done. --rumbling is one flaw with this printer.
