Summary: ML-1710 is an exceptional value
Review: This printer is unbelievably fast, prints very high quality, is fairly quiet, easy to set up, needs very little warm up time, takes very little space, and comes with a very low price tag (especially when you toss in a rebate).

I had an ink jet printer (Epson 800) and was fed up with slow printing and constantly having to replace expensive cartridges. The ink jet would also take several minutes to warm up. The ink jet wasn't worth the few times I needed to print in color. The ML-1710 is ideal for my needs and it really flies.

The down sides are that it's not the most rugged (definitely sturdy enough for a single user environment) and the output tray will likely struggle to hold the 50 pages at which it's rated. If you typically print documents in the 40-50 page range you may want to look at one with a larger output tray.

This printer is an exceptional value and highly recommended.

Summary: Great printer!
Review: ML-1710 is an excellent printer for use with a single PC at home or office.

Pro's,
1. Excellent print quality, much better than any inkjet would ever reach.
2. Drum and toner are a single unit. So there are no drum replacement costs like in Minolta 1250W or Brother HL-1440.
3. Toner/drum costs are very low, can be refilled at home easily atleast 2-3 times (just pull out the small round cap & pour in the powder).
4. Very fast print speeds, again much more than inkjets.
5. Small, good looking and light weight.
6. Has an internal paper tray (250 pages) like a real laser.
7. Low printer price after rebate and deals at local stores.

Con's,
1. It makes a lot of noise, more than an inkjet.
2. The included toner is a starter one. (1000 pages instead of 3000 on a standard one)
3. Paper curls more than one would like.
4. Takes 30 secs to come out of sleep mode.
5. Seems to consume a lot of power, house lights flicker when printer turns on (but I read this happens even with other lasers).

Overall this a great printer with excellent print quality. Dump your inkjet and get this laser now. Thanks Samsung!

Summary: Works great for me
Review: For the price, it's worth a few seconds for it to warm up. I don't print on envelopes, so that issue doesn't bother me. For a personal/home office printer, I'd recommend it to anyone. If you want it to do heavy duty office printing, pay a few extra $$$ and get a heavy duty network printer. But for the price of an ink jet printer, it's great.

Summary: Can't Beat the Price
Review: With a price of under a hundred dollars after a seventy dollar rebate, you can't ask too much of a laser printer. But this ML-1710 hits the mark.

Printer is very fast, can print around 20 pages a minute without a problem. Print quality is pretty decent but not great. Toner-save mode prints out everything very faintly...only recommended when printing out volumes of pages. But it certainly is a great value for the price.

Driver installation was a cinch and its status monitor utility tells you the exact status of the printer (off, sleep, problem connecting, etc). It features a paper tray for convenient loading unlike previous generations of Samsung printers.

Toners for this printer is very expensive, will run you around eighty dollars (almost as much as the printer itself). You can try refilling it yourself or buying a remanufactured cartridge but since my starter cartridge is still going strong, I have not bought a replacement yet.

It's probably the best laser printer than a Ben Franklin can buy...but if you have extra money to spend, look for the more recent Samsung models with USB 2.0 support.

Summary: A great value for personal/SOHO laser printer
Review: I have used HP 1000 for almost one year. But the quality I get from Samsung 1710 make obvious difference!

With 8M build-in memory, it print very fast compared to HP 1000. Handling of paper is excellent, with both tray for 250 papers and manual if you want page by page print. I also survey Brother 1440 at the same time, but get this one because it's cheaper at the local store I buy. It's advantage over Brother 1440 is it's size! The most compact laser printer in the market!!! Samsung also provide a monitor software that you can used to monitor your printer on your computer monitor, check if it's ready, busy, out of paper, etc. It's handy that you don't need to check that on the printer. Although it's a little noisy, and sound likes it's going wrong but actually won't. Just print the finished paper very fast and smooth. Very satisfied with this great product.

Summary: Good for home use.
Review: I replaced my old Panasonic with this Samsung.
1) It prints lighter than the old Panasonic. The difference is like writing with a fine-tip Sharpie versus thick-tip Sharpie.
2) Because I was used to "thick tip" Panasonic, printouts from this "thin-tip" Samsung looked strange initially. But I got used to it and actually like it.
3) Much better resolution than my old Panasonic. Now I can print Mapquest maps.
4) My child is in high school and does not need fancy school reports in colors. She now uses Samsung for all school reports. My HP inkjet printer is idling but I don't complain because I don't have to buy expensive ink cartridges.
5) This is NOT an office printer. I also have Samsung ML-1450, which I recommend for office use.

Review: Prior reviewer is dead on. This is a really cool little laser...

I've just set mine up. It took longer to unravel the old parallel cable than setting up the entire new printer. I'm retiring an NEC 860 laser 8ppm that has been good to me since 1996.

what you need to know:
rated at 17ppm. screams to me compared to what i had.
doesn't include usb cable. you must buy one.
doesn't support parallel. that's one reason it screams.
toner cartridge included is rated for 1000 pages
new toner cartridge rated for 3000 pages about $79 local retail.
cartridge includes drum which is good
it has a tiny footprint
everything load from the front which is great
holds 250 pages
also can front load envelopes, legal etc on manual basis
drivers were loaded in seconds (i'm on dell running win2000 pro)
print quality is exceptional for text and business graphics
toner save button (claimed 40% savings) produces great results
side by side against full toner, draft version is a hair lighter.

buy it, i bet you'll love it.

Summary: Outstanding Printer at this price
Review: I purchased this printer 6 month ago and have gone through over 1000 sheets of paper without a single jam. Has been working flawlessly ever since I bought it and is better than many that cost much more. The quality is very good and we are still on the original toner cartridge that came with the printer. There are only some VERY MINOR negative points:

1) Takes a little while to get going from the sleep state, although not much longer than other printers I have used.

2) A larger paper tray would be nice.

Other than the above minor points, you couldn't ask for more of a printer at this price.

Summary: WARNING - no mac support
Review: Starting from end of April 2004, Samsung will stop supporting MacOS. That means no more updates or fixes for the drivers. I have purchased this last year and now I regret it. I will try to get rid of this printer as soon as possible.

Summary: Great For The Price
Review: Great little printer for the money. I looked at others before buying it but couldn't resist due to the price (...). Took no time to setup, configure, and begin printing. Drivers were included with printer which were immediately updated by downloading from the Samsung Website. The cost of the toner cartridges is a little disturbing (...), but otherwise a great investment for the money.
