Summary: fast, but slow start
Review: I have an HP1200 that I have been very happy with, but the low price of the Brother 1440 and its excellent reviews intrigued me, so I went with this printer for my office. While it does print about as fast as the HP, it takes far too long to wake up and actually get going, and the pauses between pages are significantly longer. I upgraded the memory to 16Mb, but no improvement was observed. My recommendation to people who need only one page printed now and then is to spend the extra money on the HP1200. One other gripe: I had limited desk space, so the small footprint listed for the Brother machine looked attractive. However, its paper tray extends out the back several inches, so you can't put the printer close to the back of the desk. Also, if you want a straight-through feed for heavier printing stock, the feeds exit out the back- again, not very desirable if you want to put this printer against a wall.

Summary: Hello Brother!!! Bye bye HP.
Review: I got my printer today. It went from the box to active duty (i.e. printing pages) in 7 minutes. I'm running XP-Home using an USB printer interface with no issues. The driver came on the included CD. The install process has an option to check for an updated driver -- I did this but the CD already had the latest version. I have the base printer with 2-meg of memory but am upgrading to 34-meg ASAP. Though I've yet to need the extra memory for this printer, with memory so cheap these days I'm going to make sure printer memory is never again an issue (I've lived with an HP 5L with 1-meg of memory for 5 years). Bottom line: Though my comments by no means reflect a long term road test, every indication is that I definitely made the right choice. Thanks Brother!!! And thanks to all of my fellow reviewers for sharing their experiences :)

p.s. Update after two weeks of living with this printer: Awesome!!! Zero issues, ultra fast, great print quality. Highly recommended!

p.p.s. June 24, 2003 update: Still love it!!!

p.p.p.s. February 2004 update: Still love it!!!

Summary: Good Printer
Review: Nice printer for the money. Output good. Has been reliable so far.

Recommend extra memory.
Using on Mac

Drawbacks: Unless networked, print monitor for Mac doesn't function (except minimally and almost uselessly), nor does drop and print.
With only one button (which doesn't always function as it should) and limited print monitor access, the biggest problem is stopping a misprint.

Despite the drawbacks, however, it appears to be a good solid printer for the cost.

Summary: Beats All Other Printers in this Class
Review: I selected this printer over the Samsung ML-1430 and the Hewlett Packard LaserJet 1000. After reviewing all three online and then "live" at an office supply store, I ordered the Brother HL-1440. While the print quality may be similar for all three printers, the Brother HL-1440's build quality, easy memory upgrade path, and cheap consummables made it the clear front runner. Further distinguishing this machine is its superb handling of thicker media. It produces excellent results on cardstock, using a convenient manual feed slot on the front of the machine. Note also that the paper handling of the Brother is, in general, more robust than its Samsung and HP counterparts. The Samsung uses the top-loaded, ink-jet style paper feed system that tends to have less precise alignment. The HP uses a non-removable paper tray that is flimsy at best. The Brother, on the otherhand, uses a standard removable paper tray that is durable and handles envelopes and legal-sized paper just as easily as letter-sized. (And don't discount the handy manual feed for the single envelope.)

Out of the box, USB setup of this unit on a Windows XP Home machine was a snap. The 1440 comes with a fully illustrated easy setup guide that will have you up and running in no time. All XP drivers are available on the disks that are shipping with these machines at the time of this review.

One last note: Don't forget to order a USB (or parallel) cable with your printer!

Summary: Great Printer & Cheap
Review: While my firm has a network printer, I purchased the 1440 as my in-office printer for drafts, etc. I now use it for all my printing needs. My operating system is XPPro (installed without issues); upgraded to 34mgb through crucial -very inexpensive and easy. The print qualtiy is better than the expensive HP network printer. The 1440 is extremely quiet and quick. No priner jams or other problem - great buy.

Summary: get quality and speed on a budget
Review: this printer is great! it churns out crisp pages quickly, and the graphics are actually very nice. text is fantastic, and so far it is compatible with all the fonts i've used. i've not run into memory problems yet, but i've been conservative on placing images in my documents -- i can't speak for the machine's publishing quality, but i assume it is not meant to be used for this task. if you want a good printer that works efficiently and you have a limited budget, i would definitely suggest using this printer. be warned that it does not come with a cable to connect to your computer. great b/w printer

Summary: !Great printer!
Review: I studied various reviews and opinions on the HP laserjet 1000, Samsung ml-1230, and the Brother hl-1440. Unanimously, all agreed that the Brother gave better print quality, print speed, & lower toner costs for only slightly more in actual printer cost.

However, I was initially reluctant to go for the Brother as there were comments that the printer driver were buggy, for Windows XP. Foreseeing potential driver problems, I bought the Brother hl 1440 from a store that took refunds without question (within 14 days).

Installing the printer and software (downloaded XP driver)within 10 minutes, I was printing away happily after that! No problems so far. I plan to keep it now.

Summary: Exceptional quality for the price!
Review: I use the Windows ME OS and haven't had any problems with the Brother HL-1440 B&W Laser Printer. The print speed and quality are excellent for both text & photo printouts and the user friendly set-up and troubleshooting features are very easy to use. The only negative comment I can give about this printer is the imperfect paper tray sizer. It doesn't shift very smoothly when loading more paper into the tray, but that's a very minor complaint. I'm very impressed with my first Brother product and will look forward to someday buying a color laser printer from them.

Summary: no problems with XP
Review: I've had only positive experiences with my 1440, and while running under XP. I just downloaded the latest driver from the Brother website and didn't seem to have any problem. Yes, when you switch to 300dpi or toner save mode, the resolution is not the best, but given the overall quality of the printer, its ease of operation and the price (otherwise known as bang for the buck), I have to give it five stars. The HL 1440 is especially a good option if you're sick of paying more for printer cartridges on inkjets than on the actual printer.

Summary: Brother Should Stick to Sewing Machines
Review: I have complained to PC World and PC Magazine about their high rating of this printer. It's not XP compatible. I've downloaded every driver update to no avail. Finally, Brother suggested I "trick" my XP system by using an old HP driver. It works....some of the time. Every time I push the print button I flinch because I expect the dinging of "printer error." To make matters worse, it keeps printing garbled pagers over and over again until you turn the printer off or reboot. It won't let you delete the data. If you're using XP, run, don't walk away from this printer. Brother should stick to sewing machines.
