Summary: Great machine
Review: I needed a laser printer for my office. Before buying, I compared this item to the HP Laserjet 1000. In terms of features, this machine wins hands down because it can print on a variety of paper sizes and types and (crucially) can take manual feed. I like the aesthetics of the machine and the enclosed paper tray. The cost of the toner cartridges is much lower per page than the cost of other printers' cartridges. I am very satisfied with the machine. I have tried it with plain paper and cardstock and had equally good results. I haven't had any memory problems yet, though I plan to get a memory SIMM in the future to be on the safe side.

Summary: Problems
Review: Within one week, the printer produced a first page with toner residue all over it every time it went to print from idle. Calls to Brother were answered within 15 minutes, but the solutions did not work. The printer unit (but not toner nor drum) is being replaced by charge card hold and cross shipment.

This is the first time I have had trouble with the many printers I have so soon after I bought it. I lack confidence in this manufacturer

Summary: An Excellent Laser Printer
Review: This is my first home laser printer, and I am completely satisfied with it. The main selling points for me were its price, its generally positive reviews, and its affordable replacement cartridges.

I am using it as a network printer on my home network of 5 computers running Windows 2K and Windows XP. Setting it up with my Linksys print server was error-free, and everyone was able to print to it directly in no time.

The quality of the prints is top-notch, and the advertised print speed seems accurate. In terms of functionality, loading of the paper and cartridge is as easy as can be.

I would recommend this printer to anyone looking for an affordable light-duty laser printing solution.

Summary: Absolute junk
Review: After only a couple of weeks, the printer started printing streaks on the first page of a print job. Cleaning the corona wire 30 times and wiping the drum with a cloth (as suggested by technical support) did not fix it.

Worst printer experience I have ever had (and I am responsible for 20 printers). Avoid.

Summary: Jam-a-minute
Review: I got this after giving up on an HP6M I'd had for a number of years. It finally needed some work and I could get this for a decent price, so why not? It installed and hooked up great. But when it came to printing, particularly envelopes, it got indigestion and kept jamming.

But not really. When I took the laser cartridge out, looked for the jam and found nothing, powered down, powered back up, it was good for three or four more envelopes, and whamo! Jammed again.

Come back HP, all is forgiven....

Summary: Fantastic Personal Printer
Review: I've been wanting a personal laser printer for a while since my inkjet was getting on in years, so you can imagine my surprise and shock when I opened my christmas gifts to find this printer sitting under the tree. I had planned to buy my own, and this was the one I wanted. After doing A LOT of research on personal laser printers, I decided to eventually get this one. Lucky for me someone else got the idea.

First of all, I had always preferred the slide tray laser printers, as opposed to the top fed type like the Samsung ML-1430, so this is a definite plus. Installation couldn't be easier, even thought there were no cables included (used the old parallel cable from my previous printer). Prints are extremely fast and the resolution is fantastic at 1200 dpi. My only concern when it came to laser is printers was the cost of replacement toner cartridges. After checking Borther's website, I was greatly suprised to see the 3000 page yield toner replacement for only [$$] (replacement ink cartridges for my old injet were [same $$]). Even the High yield 6000 page cartridge was only [$$]. I also decided to check how easy they were to get at office supply stores, and everyone seems to carry them. (Incidentally, I asked about the Samsung printer, and the salesperson at one of stores informed me that replacement toner for those Samsungs are extremely expensive and very hard to find).

Couple minor nuisances:
Since the printer can handle 11" x 17" paper, the slide tray sticks out from the back of the printer. Not a huge deal except having to dust it out. Also, the printer comes with only 2MB of memory, which isn't that great if you print alot of graphics. I tried printing 3 web pages with graphics and got an error message that the printer ran out of memory. Fortunately, you can get an expansion 32MB chip for only a little more than [$$].

Great price, great print quality, and extremely fast prints equal one great printer. If you're not sure which laser printer to get, then go no further.

Summary: Glitch Free, Excellent Value
Review: I've only had the Brother HL 1440 for a day but it so far it's outstanding. The print quality is excellent and, for my purposes, quite speedy.

I had reservations about this purchase because I'd read the reviews mentioning problems adapting to Windows XP and this printer not functioning on a network. I even contacted Brother on the network issue and the rep confirmed the printer would not function on a network but, he added, you can connect it to two computers directly--one by USB and another by parallel connections. Anyway, based on the high rating by a consumer analysis and the competitive options, I decided upon this printer.

Aside from the already mentioned excellent print quality, I found the compatibility with Windows XP no problem whatever. As to networking, I was able to add the printer to my local network of two XP computers without any difficulty (i.e. I didn't have to use direct connections with two cables). As yet I haven't had any problems printing from any of my programs/files. All in all, a glitch free, excellent value printer.

Summary: Fantastic buy & super printer
Review: Just got this printer today. Set up is a snap and takes less than 5 minutes. Works wonderfully! Excellent print quality, fast, quality built. I am very happy with this printer. I have ordered the 32 meg memory upgrade but it has not arrived as of yet. If you're looking to buy a new printer and want a very nice printer for a great price, this is it. I couldn't be more pleased.

Summary: Best manual feed I have ever used
Review: When the manual feed on our venerable HP 5MP proved incapable of handling a project consisting of some small invitations and response cards I went looking for an inexpensive laser printer with decent output (I was wondering if it could match HP) but most importantly was capable of handling small pieces of card stock with aplomb. If you have the same requirement: look no further than this machine. There is no gimmicky manual feed door to open just a simple slot with a paper guide. If you tell the printer that you are using the manual feed tray it will wait patiently until you get it lined up... do a small "grab" of the leading edge from you and then its off to the races. This gets quite intuitive after the initial surprise. (One minor quibble... you can't print real close to the edge... but the 1440 exceeded all of my expectations.)

This printer has proven itself in the first day and will edge out my HP for day-to-day work. I vehemently agree with all of the reviewers that said setup was a snap. Install was flawless on my XP Home Edition... after all the cautionary notes I just followed the manual!

Summary: Great printer at a great price!
Review: I am very pleased with this printer.

When deciding upon which one to purchase I was a bit nervous after reading reviews which said this printer has problems with Windows XP. However, I followed the enclosed instructions and setup went off without a hitch (yes, I know you don't usually read instructions, but we both know you should). The next test came when I went to setup my printer to share with another computer in the house. It was simple and painless. I set the computer it was plugged in to to "share" the printer, then installed the driver on the second computer. This part particularly impressed me. The driver cd detects the printer's location on the network and configures the settings with minimal direction. This may still be a bit of a challenge for novice users, but for someone who has a passing knowledge of networking, it's not bad.

The next challenge came when I wanted to upgrade the memory in this unit. I was a bit concerned that 2 mb isn't much. So I popped in an old used 72-pin SIMM from an old Pentium 133 machine. The printer recognized it and now I have 10 mb of printer memory! This is really a shining feature of this printer. Many units use proprietary memory, but not this one.

A deciding factor in my purchase of this unit was the inclusion of a toner cartridge rated to print 3,000 pages. Many other manufacturers are shipping their low-end models with 1,000 page toner cartriges. Even though this unit may not be the cheapest one around, a FULL toner cartridge is a big value--they cost 50-80 dollars!

Finally, be sure to find a parallel or USB cable as one is not included in the box.

My experience with this printer is wholly positive.
