Rating: Summary: Excessive maintenance requirements Review: I bought this printer in December to make my job search more efficient--companies immediately trash inket resumes since it betrays a lack of quality and professionalism. Unfortunately with this printer your resumes will also get trashed unless you spend a couple hours per month cleaning it. There are a few problems:1) The take-up mechanism gathers and collects dust from the paper and makes your first few printouts feature burn marks across the page. You need to cover the exposed rear paper handler with something to prevent the dust from building up. 2) The drum streaks easily and needs cleaning regularly. The Okidata printers actually have a cleaning mode so you can avoid this. 3) After only a month or two the entire sheet will be shaded grey. I finally discovered why--the rubber toner roller that takes up the toner gathered enough paper dust to make its own new surface. This is what was causing full-page grey shading. About 20 minutes of rubbing and turning the roller has eliminated this problem, at least for this month. If you can get a refurbished unit you will be much happier. All the internet and catalog stores...have thousands of refurbished HL-1440 units for about 2/3 the price of a new one. You might want to wait for Brother's next unit if you don't like to clean things every month, or get ready to replace the toner cartridge if you're really adverse to getting toner and gunk all over yourself. Rating: Summary: A great printer Review: My first laser printer. I like it for its value for money. Extremely compact, high speed, silent operation, economical and good print quality.
Rating: Summary: No print density control Review: In general, the HL-1440 is pretty good. Easy setup... practically plug & play once I downloaded the latest driver software for Mac OS 10.2. Have printed at least 500 sheets since I bought it with nary a paper jam. Only one limitation: unlike other laser printers I have owned, the HL-1440 has no density control to make the printing darker or lighter. Mine prints very light in normal settings (and unacceptably invisible in toner saver mode). Some fonts print darker than others, so it's possible to get acceptable print density if you don't mind limiting your choice of fonts. The flip side is that because the HL-1440 is stingy with ink its toner cartridges last a long time, making it dramatically cheaper to own than competing printers. I'm finding it a capable draft printer -- 90% of my printing -- and keeping my old ink-jet printer for finished work.
Rating: Summary: Beware Review: I had to throw this printer out. It was simply too unreliable. The first unit I had streaked. After three exchanges of the printer, they finally sent me a new drum. This printed for about 4 months, and the streaks re-appeared. I have never been so aggravated by a printer and suggest extreme caution before buying.
Rating: Summary: Excellent little printer Review: Before I bought this printer I made a small research comparing quality and prices. I ended up choosing the Brother HL 1440 because it represented the best value for money. Now, after 5 months of using the printer for my home business as a consultant I can say I am very happy with my chocie. I highly recommend it for small businesses. It can even save paper by printing 2 pages in 1 and both sides. Great, isn't it?
Rating: Summary: Exellent Laser Printer ! Review: I just received mine today and installed it without a hitch. Set up was easy--in fact, it was easier due to my using Linux. No drivers to install. My Linux system recognized the printer out of its huge printer database repository. I answered a few questions and printed a test page. Everything seems to be working fine. I read other's experiences but, so far, so good for me. The price, form, fit and function are all excellent. You can't go wrong with a deal like this one. If you're still printing with an inkjet printer, step up to the "big leagues" affordably with this model. It won't break your pocketbook and your printed materials will look 10 times better as compared to an inkjet. Get one now while you can. Who knows whether this is a close-out or liquidation? The price is right and so is the overall quality of the machine. And most importantly, it works with Linux!!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Printer Review: I purchased this printer several months ago and I have been very happy with its quality and efficiency. The text and graphics output are every bit as good as the big HP we have in our office and the Brother is just as fast. I did add extra memory to speed the printing of large graphic files but that was easy and also cheap. Toner cartridges last between 4,000 and 6,000 pages (the high capacity cartridges) and I have not yet had to change the drum. Has NEVER jammed on me. Quiet, fast, cheap...what more could you ask for?
Rating: Summary: Nice printer, grainy late in life Review: I've had this printer for a while now, and was pleased enough to convince my mom to buy the same one. Very good print quality, and decent speed. Where these guys say 6 minutes for a print job to get to the printer, sounds really way off to me! Is it in their network/spooling? Can't be the printer. We've had no problems at all, ever, with feeding paper, and I've gone through immense quantities of it. Cheap to run. Minor complaint: The standard font(s) seem to be less bold than some other printers. Courier, for example, looks as if the characters are a bit "thinner" on ink than other printers give. Long term complaint: I found that the print quality goes down drastically, some say after moving the unit uncarefully without removing the drum/toner, though it didn't seem to be the cause for us. This was never a problem with mom's, only mine, which admittedly was moved more and used more. It took a REAL good cleaning of the entire drum unit, sloshing it down with alcohol-soaked rags, including meticulous cleaning of the entire green print drum. It prints as good as new again. Whether I'll have to repeat the cleaning later, I don't know. But would I buy another Brother printer? Without a doubt, yes!
Rating: Summary: Best Laser Printer for the Money Review: This laser printer is amazing. Buy it. It is fast, quiet and reliable. I have added another 32MB of memory which helps with printing graphics and large documents. The replacement parts and toner are inexpensive compared to other brands. I think it offers more features and quality than others three times the price. My only regret is that I didn't go for the color version.
Rating: Summary: An absolute Nuisance Review: I purchased 2 printers for my office of 14 people. We already have a Hewlett Packard. From day one this printer has been an absolute nuisance. It takes approximately 6 minutes for any job to reach the printer, and an additional 3 minutes for multiple pages to print. Once there is a jam - which happens often, or any sort of disruption with the print job, you have to turn the printer off for a few minutes to clear the memory, and send it again. If not, the error light will continue to flash even after the problem (jam, replenish paper etc.) has been resolved. My staff members have all gone back to printing to the HP; and this, along with the other new printer, a Brother HL-1230, sit idly by. Brother - never again
