Summary: Poor print quality
Review: Just like some of the other reviewers have noted, I, too, have noticed drastic print quality changes after owning this printer for 6 months. It says it handles cardstock well, but the first time I put a thick piece in there, it scratched the drum and luckily I was able to get a new one from Brother.

I hand-make stationery and invitations and initially this printer did great on vellum (which I use a lot). Now, the text smudges when you run your finger across lightly, causing a big mess. It's even smudging this week on plain paper!! I thought a laser printer shouldn't do that- it's precisely why I bought one in the first place.

I changed the toner after 3 months (not nearly as long as I had hoped it would last) because I got that grey streaking/background. And no matter how careful I am in opening and closing the doors, still, the toner leaks everywhere (even if just a little bit- still a mess).

Now I see how cheap it's gotten in price-- down to $160 in some places, so that must say something. You get what you pay for!! Now I'm going out to find something new.

Summary: Perfect for my needs
Review: I run a small mail-order company and print a lot of shipping labels. My inkjet printer was handling the task, albeit slowly and with a hight cost per page, so I decided to pick up one of these Brother laser printers after reading a review in Consumer Reports.

It's been chugging along for about a month now and I'm quite pleased with it. It's very speedy and can go from being powered off to a complete print job in a fraction of the time that my inkjet could. It also has a very small footprint which is a big plus in my cramped office.

A couple small issues. First, printing via USB stopped working after the first day. No matter what I tried, it would no longer work, so I switched over to a parallel cable. Also, feeding labels (such as Avery 5160s) into the manual feed on the front doesn't work all that well, though it's easy enough to slide out the paper tray and drop your sheet of labels in that way.

If you need high-volume text and B&W printing at a low-cost, this printer has it covered. I'm very pleased with it and it feeds my needs quite well.

Summary: It is awful DO NOT BUY
Review: At first it printed well but after 6 months prepare to be dissappointed. It leaves streaks on your papers that make the printed pages look like bad copies from of copy machine. DO NOT BUY.

Summary: Great deal
Review: I've only had the printer for a few months, but it works great. Fast printout, excellent, crisp copies. For high volume use, couldn't be happier.

Summary: Nice monochrome laser printer
Review: I bought this printer 2 months ago, with the standard 2Mb memory. For largey document (or picture) it prints very slowly; so I have to add an additional 16Mb. Since then it prints fine, and fast even for 600x1200 dpi (by default is 600x600).

The printer is small, nice for home usage or small business. It prints sharply, have PCL4 emulation and fast. Moreover, I can print in multipage (to save paper and the world :-) and manually in duplex. Unfortunately, it is not easy to print with manual duplex (and it slows everything); so I do not recommend using this feature.

The driver has to be downloaded from www.brother.com to make sure I have the newest one. It has a lot of features: duplex, multipage, watermark, sleeptime, date/time setting, administrator, password etc.. More than I need !

Summary: Best Laser Printer
Review: I've had this HL-1440 laser printer for about 1.5 years now and I've never had a issue with the printer. The printer can do massive volume print jobs without the slightest hint of smudged printout or an encounter with an unpleasant paper jam.

Summary: You get what you pay for
Review: I researched several printers and settled on the Brother HL 1440 because of initial price and cost of replacement cartridge. After several months of very light use, it started smudging the paper. Using the cleaning procedure shown in Brother's visual instructions did not help. I have to print three pages to get a good one.

My advice to those relying on these reviews is to be selective. some of the beaming reviews come from well-intentioned people who just bought the printer and have no previous experience with laser printers.

I will let my level of frustration dictate when it's time to junk it and go back to HP.

Summary: The printer has bad drum
Review: I've bought this printer brand new from Office Max and used it for 6 months. I've printed less than 50 pages during this 6 months. When I moved, I didn't used the printer for 6 months. When I used it again, the drum is damaged. I get 3 horizontal ink lines a a page when I print. I cleaned it up 3 times but it didn't help. I can see a line on the drum roll that I cannot clean it with tissue paper. The drum itself is damaged when I don't use the printer. Brother only warranty the drum and catrige for 3 months so I have to pay for new ones. It costs $$$ for the drum and $$$ for the ink catrige. Well, but if you buy a new printer, it'll cost you only $$$.
I had a HP 4L laser printer before buying this Brother printer. I had this HP for 6 years and it's still working.
So, Brother has problem with their printer drums and you should consider this when buying one. I'd better spend $$$ on a HP laser printer.

Summary: Gets Ugly after first year
Review: The first nine months of owning this printer, I would have rated it a 5-Star. But starting in the tenth month, the vertical and horizontal lines started appearing, and then grey-out of more and more of the pages. The printer indicator lights tell me it needs a new toner cartridge, but that's not the problem, as the toner cartridge is relatively new. The instructions say it's time to install a new drum when cleaning it myself no longer works. A new drum [is expensive]. I guess I'm going to have to just trash this printer now.

Summary: Problems after several months
Review: Over the past 12 months I have knowledge of three different HL-1440 printers experienceing print quality problems. After working great for several months, the pages printed begin to have a grey background of toner all over the page. Then streaks of toner develop. The problem gets worse over time. Brother claims that the toner needs to be replaced, but the toner is NOT empty on any of the printers. Cleaning the drum unit doesn't work either. In the long run, this printer is not worth the money saved.
