Rating: Summary: Drum and toner issue Review: This product has 2 consumable items. Drum and toner.Toner can run out, you may replace it. But drum also runs out even you print 20 pages per month. (What is the idea of buying such a capable laser printer for that low volume? I do not know.) I am having this product and I hope to go 1000-2000 pages per month and sure it will need a new drum in 8-10 months. (Manufacturer says drum goes up to 20,000 pages, Find drum as another product and see) Drum is consumed up to a point when printer prepares to print(makes hot inside and drum) So It may be quite close to print 1 or 50 pages at once in terms of drum consumption. Do not compare this to other HP printers where drum and toner are not separate and replaced at the same time. It is not fair. Compare costs and you will see. I am new to this product and it is good so far. In the past I had OKIpage 6w printer which has also a drum and toner. It also started gray lines over time but it was sure drum needed to be replaced. I believe I will have minimum print cost even I change drum after some months. I also appreciate compatibility options with that product. Linux and UNIX friendly one. Hoping not to have exceptional problems (other than drum), I expect to have a similar performance that I had from my old OKIpage 6w printer. My 5-star rating may be subjective since I did not test it over time. However you may reconsider most reviews according to what I described above.
Rating: Summary: Good Printer Review: This printer works really well. We do a lot of printing, and this printer has held up. We bought a high capacity toner cartridge when we bought the printer. The cartridge that came with the printer ran out of gas fairly quickly, but the high capacity one has lasted a long time. The print quality is good for the price, and we have not had any problems with ink dropping.
Rating: Summary: You better hope you don't need to call the company! Review: I have had this printer for about a week. I have no complaints about the product, but I felt compelled to write a review because it is impossible to get anyone in this company to help you. The printer was giving me an error message yesterday, and I couldn't get it to work. I called the technical support number numerous times only to have a recorded voice tell me to that no one could take my call due to high call volumes and that I should call back later. When I e-mailed my question to technical support, I received a form e-mail saying that it would take three business days for me to get a response. Bottom line...I strongly recommend that you look to purchase another brand of printer. If anything goes wrong with your Brother printer, there won't be anyone to help you.
Rating: Summary: 2 years later, it's time to retract my glowing review... Review: It's finally been two years since I purchased the Brother HL-1440 laser printer, and I feel obligated to retract my initial statements about how wonderful this printer is (see Oct 18, 2001 review). Unfortunately, I was one of the first to post reviews for this printer and I feel ashamed that my "newfound loyalty" and glowing remarks may have contributed to many purchasing a second-rate printer that has disappointed me over time. The HL-1440 is a perfect example of planned obsolescence. I must confirm the many negative reviews posted on Amazon that this printer works terrific out of the box but given some amount of time shows a gradual degradation of print quality. After two years, I finally saw grey smudges on all pages, as well as faint vertical lines. I have researched all over the web, including reading other consumer reviews here at Amazon and at CNet.com, and it appears the drum unit and toner cartridge are to blame. I followed the cleaning instructions online and spent half an hour cleaning and rubbing the drum unit with a dry cloth, but to no avail. The toner cartridge (I'm still on my first one) should not be at fault because I can still feel the toner inside). Neither of the blinking lights on my front panel ever came on yet. One reviewer mentioned the possibility of dust getting on the rollers; this may be another factor but the overall consensus is this printer is made with a drum unit and toner cartridge with a very limited shelf-life. Purchasing replacements for both outweighs the cost of purchasing a new printer. In all fairness, I have not attempted to call Brother's tech support line, and probably never will considering everyone else's complaints. While I regret my initial review, I hope I can redeem myself by swaying future purchasers to look elsewhere, or to at least consider the long-term effects of any laser printer purchase. The HL-1440 impressed me at first, but the long-term investment leaves me very disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Give it time...it will dissappoint Review: This printer was excellent for several months. Then it started streaking gray accross the top and sides of pages. The manual said to replace the toner and drum, but That costs more than a new printer ! DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER UNLESS YOU WANT LOW QUALITY PRINT OUTS AFTER HALF A YEAR.
Rating: Summary: Not as advertised Review: I purchased this based on the grounds that it printed at 1200 dpi. I connected it and it refused to print at this resolution, with a rather washed-out appearance that was quoted to be at 600 dpi. Buried in the manual is the statement that you need to upgrade the memory to print at the higher resolution. I called the company and they verified that this is correct. I asked what to do about it and they suggested that I return it--which I did immediately
Rating: Summary: I agree with the "Don't give praise too ealry" review Review: I have not had this printer long enough to even go through one toner cartridge and am already getting streaked and grayed out prints. I saw this printer as a good alternative to expensive Lexmark inkjet cartridges and expensive HP laser toner. Also, I had an earlier model (300 DPI) Brother laser that worked great for 4 years. . . .beware of the low price . . .or, buy two. The first one will need to be replaced before the toner runs out.
Rating: Summary: Don't give your loyalty so prematurely Review: From reading the reviews here you'll find a sharp divergence in peoples' opinions of this printer. Generally, the split is between those who have had the printer for only a few days and those who have had the printer for quite a while. I am in the latter group, and have found that there is a major risk you'll be taking in buying this printer--the drum unit and/or toner unit is very likely to fail repeatedly. Replacing both costs the same as buying a new HL-1440. After about a year of running the HL-1440, it ended up printing pages with a strange gray haze on both sides of the paper, and the toner became more splotchy. Brother's explanation of "environmental" variables was unacceptable--there is nothing in my apartment to suggest that this printer should suddenly begin malperforming. Cleaning the drum per their instructions only made the printing quality worse. My problem, however, is with trying to find a laser printer with a parallel port (to hook up to my wireless router) that is relatively affordable. In this case, paying a little extra for a different brand may be worth it. That's what I'm doing. Also to note, the manual paper/envelope feeding can be very tedious and troublesome to deal with--you can feed only one at a time, which makes applying for jobs really difficult. And even then, timing in feeding a series of envelopes or sheets is difficult, if not downright frustrating--if you feed a sheet/envelope too soon, the feeder draws in the paper as part of the previous sheet/envelope, and then jams; if you feed a sheet/envelope too late, it states it's out of paper, and you have to press the "go" button and wait for it to warm up again.
Rating: Summary: Noisy printing means spending $$$ Review: The problem with the Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer is that when the gearing goes you're only recourse is to replace the drum and toner cartridge which will cost you more than the printer is worth. Brother was smart, they made a shell of a printer that is covered, but you have to buy any important part that wears out. My HP laser keeps going and going. The Brother keeps wearing out. Brother finally agreed to replace the printer shell, but only after I replaced the drum and toner cartridge, which costs more than the printer!!!! Total cost of ownership -- terrible. I'd be embarrassed to represent this product.
Rating: Summary: Request for free software package Review: I would like to have a free software package for my new brother HL 1440 15ppm. I have a Compaq computer that I would like the Brother HL 1440 install on.
