Rating: Summary: Graduate Student Davis, CA Review: When looking at all the reviews that are listed for this particular printer, I was pretty worried since I have many deadlines that I could not risk having any problems with printing. However, I took the advice of Consumer Reports Magazine (who named this the pick of the litter) that this little printer is the way to go for efficiency and low-cost per sheet printing. I've owned this machine now for 2 months and have not had a problem yet. This printer has been working great and stays nice and quiet in it's standby mode until I call upon it to print my work. As opposed to previous reviews there have no driver problems with Win XP, MS Word, or Adobe. As for XP users, typically there is no need to install drivers since XP is designed to automatically install drivers on it's own. I gave this printer 4 stars out of 5 b/c I am still unsure of how long this printing bliss will last. But as for now, this printer is a great choice.
Rating: Summary: Great printer for a low price... Review: Okay, yes, I have some qualms: 1)you have to upgrade the memory on this sucker (2MB isn't good) and 2)it appears that there is an issue with toner (as evidenced in many reviews, and that I am currently experiencing). But, this printer still does what I need it to do - it prints fast and it prints pretty darn good quality (up until the past few days). Even at the $230 that I paid a year ago here at Amazon it was a good deal, and it is an even better deal now. I am about to go purchase a new toner cartridge (after about a year and 1,500+ pages printed), hopefully that will clear up the current issues of print quality. If not, you will see me back here with a different, much less positive review.
Rating: Summary: Immediate problems... Review: This was apparently a terrific deal for under $100. It's a small, compact, attractive, relatively quick laser. When it works, resolution is sharp. Contrary to other complaints, replacement toner & drums are very inexpensive if purchased online (eBay, Amazon, etc). One design flaw is the paper feed system. When paper is manually fed, it often goes in crooked. When paper is fed through the tray, it's fed through an odd "S" shape, which sometimes results in paper jams and often produces a wrinkled final product (especially if printing on thick paper or labels). Why not feed the paper straight through? But the largest problems by far are the tremendous driver-related issues. The driver that comes with the printer works only for certain applications. There was absolutely no indication of this anywhere on the box, on the paperwork, or on the installation CD. But when we tried to print online postage, the printer mis-fired ...a mistake that cost us $50. We called Brother - after 70 minutes on hold, they matter-of-factly told us (as if we should have known) *NOT* to use the driver that came with the printer. We should use the default Win XP driver. So we tried it, and again, it works for some applications but not for Corel, MS Word, Adobe, and several others. So we tried the drivers on the Brother web site. This third (supposedly updated) driver fixes some of the problems but also creates new one. It doesn't appear to work for Corel, Excel, spreadsheets, and several others applications. What happened to the "plug-and-play" concept? A quick internet search will reveal these are extremely common problems for this printer (and for all Brother products). I really want this printer to work, but after more than 35 hours of work & research into printer drivers, it's not looking too good...
Rating: Summary: Problem printer Review: I purchased this printer just over a year ago, based on positive reviews I had read. Unfortunately, I am now just experiencing the problems that others have had with this printer after using it for a while. EVERY page printed has a faint gray background over the entire page, with slightly darker gray streaks along the margins. Troubleshooting using the included Users Manual, and the Brother website, doesn't help. Latest peculiarity is a black streak and specks appearing only when I print to envelopes using the single-sheet feeder. Haven't tried contacting Brother, but I don't hold much hope. **_AVOID THIS PRINTER!!!_**
Rating: Summary: inconsistent behavior Review: First the good news: I've had this unit since October, and the printing is fast and clear. I'm not a really heavy user, 20 - 30 pages per week, printed from text apps. But... here comes the caveat... ...I've had problems with this printer suddenly refusing to print. The solution offered by the phone support worked once, and then the problems started again. After following directions on the website for Windows XP, uninstalling the driver, reinstalling, the unit is back in operation. I'll report back on how consistently it works now. Considering that XP has been the Microsoft OS on most new computers for over a year, driver problems shouldn't be coming up.
Rating: Summary: Junk, Junk Review: I own both the 1440 and 1450 and they both had the streaking problem from 6 months to a year. Both the drum and toner cost more than the printer. I am junking both of the them and will never buy a Brother product again. They should advertise these are disposable printers.
Rating: Summary: Exceptional Value, Performance Review: I have not had the issues that others have. I have owned my 1440 for over a year, and have gone through 3 toner cartridges already, never having any problems with pages printed with extra toner etc. I recommend this printer as one of the very best. And its fast! wonderful printer..
Rating: Summary: Great printer Review: Just got this printer and I really love it. I do not do a lot of printing, but what I have thrown at the 1440 has turned out great. It is FAST and high quality. The only downside I can see is the initial RAM amount (4 megs), but I can upgrade that if I ever run into a bottleneck down the road. Warm-up takes a few seconds and printing is a little noisy, but not bad. When in sleep mode, it is whisper quiet. Installation was easy (using a USB cable) - just run the installer and then plug it in, no problems. The only strangeness I encountered was a new service being added to my computer (XP Pro) that doesn't seem to accomplish anything. I can disable the service and print without a problem, so I'm not sure why it had to be installed and running in the first place.
Rating: Summary: Great print quality - short toner cartridge lifetime Review: Printer worked perfectly for about 6 months, then the grey backgrounds and toner streaks started to appear. Like others, I found there was still plenty of toner left so I was hesitant to fault the cartridge. However, after some research, it sounds like the lifetime of the cartridge is limited to 6 months even if the toner is not exhausted - this being attributed to temperature/humidity fluctuations. Didn't sound right to me, but bought a new cartridge anyway and all is well again - perfect, sharp, quick printouts. Dunno if this is true for all laser toner cartridges or just Brothers. The only other laser printers I'm familiar with are at work where we go through toner every few weeks anyhow. Overall, the print quality and initial cost can't be beat, but keep in mind you'll probably need to replace the cartridge every 6 months regardless of how much you use it (get the TN430 cartridge if you don't print as much - it's a bit cheaper).
Rating: Summary: Gray Pages and Flickering Lights Review: I had the same problem as many others. After about 6 months of light use the pages come out gray covered in toner. The power drain also caused serious problems. Without a UPS it pulled enough current to reboot the desktop in the same room. I've returned to HP.
