Rating: Summary: Loud Review: I'd agree with most reviews here. The one quibble I have about this printer is that it is quite loud. Annoyingly loud. We do loads of draft (simple) printing here at work. I have an NEC SuperScript 870 on my desk, and a co-worker (about, oh, ten feet from me) got the HL-1440 and when the HL-1440 prints, I can barely hear my NEC over the loud hum of the HL-1440. It's that loud. If you have a small workspace and print long documents frequently, this could pose an issue.
Rating: Summary: Great value Review: This laser packs a punch for the price. It's compact and efficient. The only slight flaw is that an annoying pop-up appears telling you that you are running out of hard disk space. I use Windows XP, so this may be a function of a slight incompatibilty with the new operating system.
Rating: Summary: Jams frequently - Difficult to clear paper path Review: This printer is a good value and, aside from the paper jams, works well. BUT, the paper jams are a stomach-churning hassle and have taken a lot of time to fix. The paper path can be difficult to access. Why design it this way? When I brought it in to be serviced after a series of paper jams the technician said, "I've been seeing a lot of these lately." I have never been able to feed an envelope through the machine successfully. TIP: when you feed in anything manually, be sure to click on "options" and choose "thick paper."
Rating: Summary: Attention Mac users! Review: Attention Mac users! Everithing is wanderful about this printer, including the price. However, there is one little thing you should consider: THIS IS NOT A POSTSCRIPT PRINTER!!! Per Brother Solutions Center: "...if you are using a DTP application such as QuarkExpress or Adobe Illustrator, it is often better to use a Postscript emulation driver such as the BR-Script driver that might be supplied with the printer. Please note the BR-Script printer drver will only be supplied on printers that support the Brother BR-Script." Since brother HP-1440 does not support the BR-Script drive, be prepared to see jagged edges, poor res images, dot-matrix look when you print copy from Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.
Rating: Summary: Driver does not support peer-to-peer networking on Win XP Review: This is a great printer. Quiet, fast, and excellent print quality. I upgraded the memory to 18MB and now it absolutely flies. However, the Brother printer driver for the HL-1440 does not support peer-to-peer networking when installed on a Windows XP system. The printer is also compatible with the driver for the HP LaserJet IIP printer, which does support peer-to-peer networking. I thought I had the problem solved by switching to the HP driver, when I discovered that the HP driver only supports 300X300 dpi resolution. Since networking on our home network is a very important function to me, I have to say that despite all of its pros, I probably would have gone with another printer had I known about the networking issue before I purchased. Hopefully, Brother will come out with an updated driver that resolves this issue.
Rating: Summary: Does not support peer-to-peer printing on Windows XP Review: This is a great personal laser printer very fast. Be aware that if you are considering this as a small office printer to share on Windows XP computers that it will not work. Only the Windows XP computer that it is connected to will be able to print. It does seem to share properly on Window 98 machines....
Rating: Summary: Mixed value Review: I've owned this printer for about a year now. The feeder jammed several times after I used it for the first three months. It was very, very difficult to unjam but somehow my husband figured it out. Now I am extremely careful about how I feed the paper. Under options you can select the thickness of the paper which I recommend. Now the printer is making strange grinding noises so I don't know how much longer it will last. The printer is pretty slow on the first copy, about 10 or 20 seconds but the printouts are good quality.
Rating: Summary: Fast printer, excellent output, great price! Review: After much on-line research, I decided to buy a Brother HL-1440 to replace my Lexmark Z42, which had died on me. I've only had it for a few days, but I love it! I'm running Windows XP Professional with the printer connected to USB, and it works like a charm.... The output is excellent. Text, graphics--it all comes out superfast and crisp. I think it's a great bargain!
The driver for Windows XP has some quirks, though. For example, it does not support printing text in grayscales (graphics print fine in grayscales). I was able to resolve this by using the driver for the HP LaserJet 5L, which the Brother seems to be compatible with. Also, in some applications (e.g. Streets and Trips 2002), some text is printed mirrored (resolved by using the HP 5L driver). Other than that, though, I've been extremely happy with this printer.
Rating: Summary: Excellent printer, excellent investment Review: The Brother HL-1440 was probably wisest computer related purchases I had ever made. It performs extremely well. The print quality is on par with the HP I use at work. After having printer more than 1000 pages I had yet encountered a problem (paper jam, etc). No problem with printing mailing labels and envelopes either. I only wish that they would include in the package a printed user manual and a USB cable. Note that the printer can do 15 ppm if you're printing the same page over and over again. Otherwise you get around 6 ppm. The printer takes a single standard 72pin SIMM (I'm using a 8meg, Fastpage module--not sure about EDO RAM; I do know that a double-sided module wouldn't fit). So if you have an old computer lying about, you can save a few bucks by opting for the HL-1440 instead of the HL-1450 then upgrading the memory yourself.
Rating: Summary: Very good, with caveats Review: Setup is clean. Quality is very good. But it couldn't print web pages with graphics at full resolution with its default memory; it needed more memory. And it takes lots of electrical power: once per page it dims my overhead light, which shares a breaker with the printer and PC. Brother's tech support did not reply to my enquiry about this.
