Rating: Summary: Great little printer Review: I was in the market for a new laser printer to replace my 5L. I was looking for a non-gravity feed printer that was fast, had a small footprint and was inexpensive. After looking around and reading reviews, I had purchased the 1012. I hooked it up and fired off a few test prints. Talk about fast printing! The speed of this printer is simply amazing!! Also, I have to add that this printer is completely silent when idle! Gets 5 stars in my book!!!
Rating: Summary: Great Inexpensive Printer with Incompatibility Problems Review: I have purchased two of these printers. The first was connected to a 9 month old Pentium IV machine running XP with no problems. The software installed flawlessly and the printer began to spit out papers seconds after I pressed the print key. I replaced an old Epson inkjet that would clog its heads if unused for a day or two. It was a joy to have a printer that just worked without endless print-head cleaning cycles. It also took up much less space on my desk and printed much faster. No colour but I have a wide carriage photo printer for that. A few months later I purchased a second for my office computer. This is an older 330MHz running Windows 98. After two hours of trying I gave up. The software wouldn't completely install; the computer would not recognize the new printer. There was no printed manual to refer to, just a poorly done set-up poster. I slogged through the CD manual and of course the troubleshooting section was no help. After wasting way more time than installing a printer should take I chanced upon a small addendum to the manual that clearly stated that USB 2.0 was required. No such thing on a Windows 98 machine of course. So I packed it up and sent it back to Amazon. Conclusion: Let the buyer beware especially if you have an older computer. The first is still working flawlessly on my newer computer.
Rating: Summary: Small, Fast, Inexpensive, and Unobtrusive Laser Review: The first thing I noticed about this printer is that it's smaller than the Lexmark inkjet that it replaced. Its form factor is a good fit for cramped desks or dorm rooms. Also, it's fairly quiet and it doesn't draw a lot of power compared to some other lasers (the spec is about 200W when printing and <7W in standby mode). The second thing I noticed was its speed--the first page comes out in under 10 seconds, as advertised, and subsequent pages practically fly out of the printer. It's much faster than my old inkjet, and produces much clearer text as well. It would be a five-star review if it weren't for the fact that replacement toner cartridges are expensive--about $70 for a 2000-page cartridge, yielding 3.5 cents per page, a little pricey for a laser (but still cheaper than the an inkjet). In a quick web search, I was not able to find any remanufactured or clone cartridges for this printer--but it is a fairly new model, so these will probably show up on the market in a few months. It's also worth noting that since this is a new model, not much is known about its longevity at this point. For Linux users: This printer doesn't seem to be fully PCL compatible (it's advertised as a host based printer). I got it to work with the ljet4 driver, but some users have reported problems. See www.linuxprinting.org for more information.
Rating: Summary: Smooth Printer, Highly satisfied. Review: I got this delivered couple of days ago and let me tell you this is one smooth printer. I wanted a laser printer with which I could print my work documents from home. I was worried about the quality of print not matching the high-end laser printers at work, but let me tell this is one professional printing device. I compared it with Samsung ML-1710, brother HL-1440 but finally decided on the HP after reading some horror stories about Samsung's print quality and Brother's customer service. The printer is so compact that it is hard to believe that it is laser printer and not a Inkjet. I am more than positive that if you are home user looking for better quality printing this is the printer for you. Feel confident, make sure you buy the USB cable as it does not come with it.
Rating: Summary: Inexpensive laser printer, especially for HP Review: I just got this printer yesterday. I was amazed w/ Amazon's Super Saver shipping. The printer came in two days. The one thing I can say about this printer is that it is fast, fast, fast. Then again I'm comparing it to my old parallel port NEC SuperScript 660plus. There's virtually no warm up time before printing and the printed pages just start shooting out. This is even w/ my archaic 450 MHz machine. Since the HP is host based I'm sure it will be even faster w/ a better computer. Text quality as well as graphics looked fine after a quick test printing. My main quibble was with the installation. This was the hardest piece of USB hardware I ever had to install and I consider myself pretty computer savvy. The instructions tell you to install software before installing the printer. But then in the middle of the installation it starts to detect you printer w/ the message, "Make sure to have your printer plugged in and powered on." How am I supposed to have the printer plugged in and powered on when I'm supposed to install the software first. So I had to plug the USB cable in while it detected the printer. I don't think my computer liked that. Win98 took over and automatically installed the driver and then the installation program cancelled itself. I had to reinstall the driver like 4-5 times before it finally took. So in a nutshell, a really fast laser printer from HP for cheap, BUT be wary of the installation. Don't expect an easy USB installation. Otherwise I would've given this product 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: can't beat the price Review: I ordered this printer in mid-November, and so far I've been very happy with it. It prints very fast and the print quality is excellent. For instance, you can print complete graphics with backgrounds and everything comes out clear and easily readable. HP has a good thing going with this product line -- we're all tired of changing inkjet cartridges and getting smudged prints, but who wants to pay $500+ for a heavy unit designed for office use (Brother, Canon, Epson)? This printer is light and easy to store, although it's not as small as you might think. Since the trays stick out, it takes a full corner of my home desk. Installing it was a little bit of a hassle since my computer (Win XP) could not immediately recognize all the installed drivers. So the easiest way to install it is to go through the "Add Printer" wizard.
Rating: Summary: See my January Revision down to 1 star Review: I have used the low-end Samsung and Brother printers. The Brother produced streaks and required multiple drum replacements under warranty. The Samsung text became unreadably light and the drivers produced inferior, almost laughable grey-scale graphics. This HP printer is far superior, and worth a few extra dollars..the current price is astonishing. Highly recommended. PS To those that complain there is no parallel port, that is model 1015 as is clearly stated in all documentation.
Rating: Summary: no problems with mac osx 10.3 Review: Other than the fact that the installation CD was all bent up, and thus unusable, I had no problems (I downloaded the driver from HP's web site). At any rate, the printer is cheap, small, and light. I was a little worried about compatibility with 10.3 (Panther) but I've had no problems other than the fact that it doesn't remember printer settings (as with all HP printers and OSX, maybe?). Fast delivery from Amazon, using their free delivery it arrived in two days. Print quality is excellent. Speed is excellent. Paper curls slightly when it comes out, but not enough to be a problem in my opinion. Might just be the paper. I gave it four stars instead of five because the ink cartridges are rated for 2,000 pages instead of the typical 2,500 (I was comparing with the laserjet 1300), yet the refill cartridges cost the same ($70). But I'm well aware that with the cheaper printers they make their money on ink, not the printer itself. And if you are going to be printing a lot of text, then it's still much, much cheaper than an inkjet, and the print quality is incomparably better--I just got rid of an HP inkjet 3650 that prints only 200 pages on a $20 ink cartridge, which is ridiculous. If you do a lot of printing, that adds up quickly...So, overall, highly recommended, at least after two weeks of use....
Rating: Summary: Great product at a great price Review: My office had to buy one of these for work and when I saw how quickly it printed and how easy it was to use I talked my husband into getting us one for home use. What was even better is Amazon's price! At work we paid $198.00 and got free shipping from Office Depot. Amazon's price of $149.99 plus free shipping made it a better deal at an unbeatable price. My husband was impressed and he uses it more than I do! :-) Well worth the money!
Rating: Summary: Great Printer for $149 Review: I have had HP printer products for years at home and at school. I'm the Tech Coordinator at a k-12 school and we have HP 4P(1), 5P(2), 6MP(1), 5N(2), 4000N(3), 4050N(1), 4550N-color(3), 2200N(2) and just ordered two 4200N's. We have yet to retire an HP printer. Each one purchased is still being used. I have alway been please with their products. Ordered this product (Plus the recomended USB cable $6.24) on 11/23/03 and it came already today 11/26/03 with free shipping. Directions were simple and everything installed flawlessly. I printed out a few sample pages and am quite impressed with the speed and quality for this price printer. The only thing that is a bit slow is accessing the LaserJet Tool Box. The web broser method is slow to display information. But that is something that I probably won't use very much at all. It's a great deal.
