Rating: Summary: Laser printing for the rest of us. Review: Let's face it. Many of us are tired of using inkjet printers for text jobs. Mainly, it's the cost of ink. Inkjet cartridges are expensive and you don't get many pages to the pop. Plus, if you've been unlucky enough to use an Epson, the clogged printheads and general unreliability of the output are simply unacceptable. (Three Epsons later, I'm using an HP inkjet, a PSC 1350 all-in-one, and am thrilled with it.)If you do a lot of text printing, there really isn't an alternative to a good laser printer--and now you have one. The print-out is superlative; the speed is terrific--I'm getting a about a 3-seconds a page; the noise-level is low; no laser printer smell, either; and--get this--you get about 2,000 pages per ink cartridge (the cartridges are around $60, but for this kind of output, well worth it). The pages don't get curled, despite the small size--although they are surprisingly hot when they come out of the printer. "Hot off the presses" gets a whole new meaning. But, they cool down quickly! I use mine with a PowerMac, and the driver works flawlessly. I even have it networked on my home Airport network, and it works like a charm. HP proves itself again as the leader in home printers.
Rating: Summary: good for font size>10 Review: In general a fair printer for home office. But I noticed that if I use font size=8 in MS Excel, characters have noticable ugly rough edges. Not that bad for font size=10 but you can still see the edges are not so smooth. A bit better in MS Word. Compared with output from a high end laser printer, you can definitely tell the difference. If you are not so picky, this one is for you. If you need very high quality output, go for a better one.
Rating: Summary: Good quality for less money Review: I purchased the HP LaserJet 1300, which is supposedly better. It took me several tries before I could get it to install properly. It seemed to run nicely, but the next time I turned on my computer, everything went haywire. I kept getting error messages on every program I ran, and both of my printers just sort of disappeared. Suffice it to say, I returned that one. I bought the 1012 for less than half the price, and it installed easily with no software issues. It prints great, albeit a bit slower than the 1300. The size is wonderful, though... it is half as big, so takes up much less space on the desk. Also, the toner is a bit cheaper to replace than the 1300. I recommend this printer to anyone who wants an inexpensive, but good quality laser printer.
Rating: Summary: Good printer, but don't forget to buy a cable Review: This printer is a USB only printer and does not include the cable. So you need to buy an USB cable for it. This can be very annoying if you order online and expect to be able to set it up out of the box. Printing speed and quality is good, however. Not including the cable is a serious marketing drawback for this product and the cost for the company is not worth the headache for the consumer, IMO.
Rating: Summary: Impressed so far Review: I bought this printer as a replacement for my HP LaserJet 1100 (if you had one of these, you know the story... i.e. maddening multi-feed defect-- even with the cheesy HP "fix" installed) Anyway, I was very reluctant to go with HP again. I decided to roll the dice and give it a try. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. The 1012 is faster than the 1100, more compact, and has nice print quality. All the paper trays/ recievers fold up neatly when not in use. Even though it's the low-end model, the plastic has a nice look and nothing appears to be too junky or flimsy. And of course, no more multifeed problems (whew!) Installation was pretty straightforward with windows XP-- only strange thing is that they ask you to install the software before plugging in the printer, but in the middle of the installation it starts to "look" for the printer-- as if it should be already plugged in. No problem, I plugged it in at that point and bingo, everything clicked into place. I was worried about the overheating issue brought up by one of the other reviewers, since I tend to print many pages at once. However, I have not encountered this so far, even after printing 50 pages on a couple of occasions. We shall see how it holds up over time...
Rating: Summary: Installation problems Review: Like Amadeuz, I had a hard time installing (tried multiple times, even returned one printer and tried another), though I use XP pro on a P4 machine. Only unlike Amadeuz, I gave up after 4 tries. The problem may be with my Dell, which doesn't seem to like its USB 2.0 ports. The point of commenting here is just to reinforce that while installation may be seamless for most, there's something quriky and buggy about either the installation software or the instructions that will cause some people problems. I had to guess at stars because I never got to use the machine, though I believe the people who are happy with it.
Rating: Summary: A home user's dream! Review: I needed a printer to print out b&w text. I considered the Brother 1440 and the Samsung 1710 along with this item after I decided to switch to laser over inkjet. I test printed all of them in the store and was extremely impressed with the advantages this machine had over it's low-price competitors. For one thing it has quite a small "footprint" on the desk. It also begins printing faster than it could say "yes, sir!". It also makes absolutely no noise that I can tell while it is on. I have heard the other two can offer a noticable whine when they are powered on. All-in-all it is exactly what someone like me, who has modest non-color home printing needs could want. The reduction of printing costs from $.12 a page (inkjet) to $.03 a page is enough for me to justify the higher upfront costs of laser.
Rating: Summary: question Review: If it is USB, then you cannot share this printer so you can network and print from inside your LAN. Right? I cannot find 1015, which one user said it has parallel port. I dont want USB for a printer. Doing a search on web get me to a website in UK. Is 1015 only made overseas?
Rating: Summary: simple is sometimes a good thing Review: I've had a rough time with printers and finally decided on forgoing multifunction printers and opted for the HP 1012 Laser. If you're looking for an efficient black and white, high quality, fast printer without all the extra BS - this printer is the one for you. It does not come with a written manual which is a bit annoying but it's so simple that you really don't need it anyway. Someone gave it only 1 star because it couldn't handle mass printing quickly, Come On! Look at the price. If it could run mass functions like that it would cost another 300 bucks. It's a great bargin if you want a printer that will handle small to moderate output for home use or small business jobs like letters, proposals, etc. I'm running XP and it installed easy and works great, and is very fast with crisp print. Just follow the directions and load the software before plugging in. Couldn't be more easy unless someone installed it for you. Amazon had it to me in two days even with Super Saver Shipping.
Rating: Summary: A winner! Excellent price and quality Review: Great price. Replaces slow, cartridge-consuming inkjet printer. Easy to install (just follow the instructions, including reading the PDF file on the software installation disk), unless you are a sharply intuitive, tech-savvy, experienced user. Adding this to my ancient iMac, the installation instructions were clear and simple: literally no words, just pictures. Running the printer once the software was installed and the printer plugged in slowed me only a bit because I first failed to look for the USB link (I looked to the HP link instead) on the "add printer" menu. Then I printed: fast, quiet, clear, crisp. Throw away your inkjet printer. The savings in those expensive throwaway cartridges alone will probably pay for this laser printer. The shipment was fast and free. This printer, like Amazon underpromises and overdelivers.
