Rating: Summary: 1st-page speed is what matters Review: Our typical print job is directions from Mapquest or an email from someone as we're running out the door to a soccer game. So what matters to us is 1st-page speed. This printer gets that first page out in about the time it takes you to to reach over and grab the paper (about 8 seconds). No warmup time at all. And the processor is fast -- no discernable slowness with pdfs. The other cheap lasers out there may have a comparable page-per-minute rating, but I think this is the fastest first-page printer out there in this price range. It does get very hot internally and slightly curls cheap paper @ about 20 pages, and others report it overheats and slows down @ 50 pages. That is a tradeoff for lack of fan noise. I'd rather have no noise. But people should be aware that this is not designed to be a workgroup printer.
Rating: Summary: The HP 1012 A Solid Performer Review: Looked over many reviews and made, what turned out to be a very solid choice. I have the printer about 2 months now, and it has performed flawlessly. I found the paper did curl a little at the top when coming out of the printer (as some other reviews had mentioned) but that most probably is due to heat when the paper passes thru the printer...when the paper cooled it was fine...I did use 20LB paper at first but switched to a heavier 22LB paper and found the paper did not curl as much...The copies are sharp, & printing is quick, and you can use a "highlighter" immediately after making a copy with no smearing. For the price it beats my old inkjet and I am very happy with it.
Rating: Summary: GREAT PRINTER Review: I have had the HP 1012 for four months and have loved every day with it. It is a quality printer with a great toner cartridge (I was sick of those little and expensive ink cartridges). It also has a maual feed that can take envelopes. WHAT A BARGAIN! Kit should get one of these --- he knows that HP has always made great printers!
Rating: Summary: say goodbye to expensive ink cartriges Review: The toner lasts a lot longer then inkjet cartriges Operates faster and quieter then a inkjet printer. Prints in black only but not a problem, most of my printing is not in color.
Rating: Summary: Works like a dream...so far. Review: Just got it.Couldn't be any easier to install, first page is FAST. Great small office printer. My inkjets are now relegated to photo/ color printing only. Get a wireless USB print server and you can use it for the entire house. Let's hope it holds up. HP tech support is much less than it used to be. So far, happy as a clam and the price on Amazon was great! Picked the free 5-9 shipping and it arrived in one day! How's that for service?
Rating: Summary: Great Little Printer Review: I've had this printer for a week now after my old one conked. USB connected, this printer is now serving both a Windows XP laptop and a G4 Mac running OS X. Driver installation smooth and easy for both from the same CD. Regret that the toolbox doesn't seem to work on the Mac, but it doesn't do much anyway - the real selling points are: fast, quiet, small, easy to set up, toner not too pricy - I'm happy with it. Since sharing isn't trivial between OS X and XP (no matter what they tell you) I have to swap plugs for printing, but that's a minor trouble.
Rating: Summary: Inkjets be gone! It's Time Enter the Land of the Laser! Review: After much consideration I finally caved in and decided to invest in a laser printer. There is just no Inkjet that can match the sharpness and clarity. I came across the HP 1012 ... at the register. Went ahead and boought the ... add on warrany which covers more issues than even the 1 year factory warranty that comes w/the printer. ...I got out of the store with a Laserjet Printer plus bumper to bumper coverage for THREE YEARS. If you think about it, most folks don't really need color anyway. I had an Hp 932C. Color cartridge =[money], black cartridge=[money]: [money] plus tax; yield? about 500 absolutely slow as molasses sheets. HP 1012 LaserJet...toner cartridge retail off the shelf; around [money]...see'em [online] for as little as [money] w/ no complaints; yield? TWO THOUSAND SUPERFAST PAGES. See my point? The printer is lightening fast. It really kicks serious butt in my opinion. I LOVE it and am really glad I bought one. It was a mega great deal! I should tell you that I am a simple home user and do not subject the 1012 to office environment usage levels but its said to be rated to handle office level usage no problem. I simply have no complaints about it and feel like it was worth every penny I paid for it. Also, the ... add-on warranty coverage even covers surges, natural wear and tear and I think even some other personal assanine acts that no other warranty would ever condsider touching!
Rating: Summary: Great but duplexing inconvenient Review: I had the Minolta 1350W, but decided to go with the HP 1012, because the former's fan noise for 15 minutes after printing was putting me off printing stuff... The HP 1012 is quick, and because it's fanless, it's *quiet* when it's not printing. I've heard that it slows way down when it gets hot after ~50 pages, but I rarely print that many pages, so this is a tradeoff I'm happy with. My only complaint is with manual duplexing, which I have turned on by default. - An instruction screen comes up every time I print, followed by a second dialog. I don't need these dialogs, and they're a pain! - Manual duplexing is needlessly confusing. The second side of duplex jobs is fed into the printer foot-first. But when printing on the back of something (i.e. the printer thinks it's a blank piece of paper), such as when photocopying stuff, paper is fed in head-first. This inconsistency makes it easy to feed paper the wrong way... - Worst of all, it prints even sides before odd sides, which means whenever printing single-page jobs, it prints a blank page, then asks for it to be fed back in again to print page 1, which is all you're interested in in the first place. Yuck! With the Minolta, it prints page 1 first, then you can hit cancel, and aren't forced to reload paper... Of course, it would be better still if it ignored duplexing when it knew a job was only one page... Overall, it's a very nice printer. It's a pity that duplexing is so poorly thought out...

Rating: Summary: Welcomed by the land of Laser! Review: Simply said, this is a great printer! I have owned a number of inkjets and they have all performed reasonably well (minus the cost and occasional clogged head) but I was interested in getting a cheap-to-run laser to allow me to print off lots of text pages quickly (I'm a med student and I simply don't need a color printer anymore - gone are the days of needing to print colorful title pages for crappy highschool projects!!). The 1012 fits my needs tremendously well. I agree with most of what I have read in the other reviews - this printer is quick, small, cheap, and well built. It does churn out HOT papers and it makes your room smell like a Kinkos copier store temporarily but who cares?!! I LIKE THE SMELL and don't all Lasers do that? So, ask yourself if you REALLY need a color printer. If not, take the 1012 for a spin.
