Summary: Superb printer!
Review: HP Laserjet 1012 is one of the best consumer grade laser printer. It costs slightly more than Minolta, Samsung or Brother offerings but that's because its built better & designed to last.

The printer has small footprint, easy to set up and looks good. The paper tray can be folded for smaller storage space and replacing the toner cart is simple. Finding the hp toner and laser paper at local stores is also much easier than other brands.

Print quality is excellent, just like business class lasers and print speed is good enough for a single user. Noise is moderate when printing. This printer has quality parts unlike other cheap & disposable lasers. When it comes to laser printers hp is the king!

Summary: A great printer got better
Review: This is an improved version of the Laserjet 1000. Changes primarily include better drivers (some of the silly install problems the 1000 experienced are gone) and a new manual paper feed that does not require removing the standard paper. All in all, this is another winner for HP, and a bargain at that. As long as it meets your needs (USB interface only, less feature rich, lower print volume) it is a great value. I'd had no problems with it, and it works great. And, yes, you do have to buy your own USB cable.

It is worth noting that the paper feeding mechanism is less than industrial. While I have had no problems at all, I sense that it would not stand up to heavy use. E.g., it fine for a SOHO but not for something larger. Consider an HP Laserjet 1300 if that's your environment.

We use it at home attached to a Windows 2000 laptop and it works flawlessly. Printer output quality is fast and very clear. I highly recommend this printer.

Summary: HP 1012 laser - a great upgrade from your inkjet
Review: I've used 4 or 5 inkjets at home over the past 10 years (HP and Canons). Color is great, but smeary ink and the lack of crispness has its downsides for complex text printing (and inkjet ink is expensive when kids like to print a lot). I'll keep a color inkjet hooked up too, but the laserjet will be my default printer. HP has been a name I've come to trust (we use the real big HPs at work, so I thought HP would be a good bet for home). The HP 1012 is very easy to use, very quiet -- quieter than inkjets, and faster too for the same price point. I really like its size - smaller than my Canon inkjet 6000, and it's not that heavy. The manual feed option is great for printing an envelop without changing paper - and manual back-to-back printing is easy. It comes with toner that should last 2000-3500 sheets (based on the surveys and reports). I've used the HP 1012 for a few days and I'm convinced this is a great buy. HP didn't include a USB cable, but shop a bit online and you can get one .... I got a Tripp Lite Gold 6 footer from Amazon for (much less than you would pay in a store); the 1012 was cheap and shipping on the whole deal was free. I've never had a problem getting things quickly and accurately from Amazon - and this time again, no problems. Toner for this unit could be a little pricey if you by it in a store . I don't know if I will try refurb toner (I won't try the refills) but when I shopped the various online stores, I found you can get these toner replacements, brand new, and free shipping if you just look for the deals. My HP 1012 is hooked up to a WinXP Pro DELL machine. Installation was no problem (just follow the instructions and use their CD first). I have 3 other PCs on my home network: 2 more WinXP Pro DELLs and a Win98 DELL. I use basic network printer-sharing so the other PCs in the house are using this laserjet off my network now too. The satellite WinXP machines added the printer with ease (installed the drivers off my network - no issues). The Win98 needed the included CD to allow it to get to the needed drivers. But all is working well!

Summary: WARNING and BEWARE
Review: I previously gave this printer 5 stars. However, beware. If you print, say, 50 pages in a row, the printer slows from its rated throughput to only ca. 4 pages per minute. HP tech support confirms this, and indicates that a cheap printer 'without a fan' overheats, and compensates by stopping the continuous printing...it could not be expected to do any better. Then why is it rated at 15 ppm?

What nonsense. The printer is misrepresented. If you only print a couple of pages at a time, then this is fine. But if you print out program code or book or article manuscripts, this is a BIG problem.

Summary: Excellent printer; shoddy 3rd party delivery from Amazon
Review: Firstly, I'd like to endorse all the other positive reviews of the HP LaserJet 1012. I initially purchased this printer to replace a lousy Epson C82 inkjet that kept sucking up ink and clogging. The 1012 LaserJet is fast (7 seconds to start up and print), quiet, and produces excellent black and white documents. Couldn't be happier with it.

I wish I could say the same about Amazon's delivery methods. When I purchased this printer, it was unfortunately fulfilled through Office Depot. That meant a shipping charge (which originally hadn't been on the web page) and sales tax. Fine.

The trouble came when I found the printer for $50 less on HPshopping.com the very next day. I immediately tried to cancel my purchase on Amazon.com but found the order had been locked, even though no discernible fulfillment or shipping was in process. I immediately called Office Depot because it was obvious that they had not shipped it yet (there was no tracking trail yet via UPS).

Unfortunately, Amazon.com failed to provide me with any useful information that could be related to Office Depot. Their unfriendly Customer Service Rep didn't recognized my tracking Order, my name, or anything about my order. As far as Office Depot was concerned, I didn't exist. And yet, they were going to ship me a printer.

I had to wait 8 days for Office Dept to finally fulfil my order. Ironically, HPShopping.com delivered my printer 2 days later, a full 5 days before Office Depot got around to me, even though my HP order was made a day later (go figure). When I immediately took my unwanted printer to the Post Office to mail it back after calling Office Depot for an RMA number, I was a bit horrified to find the cheapest method of mailing the printer back cost $23.96. I plunked down the plastic and that's all she wrote.

I suggest skipping buying this printer from Amazon. There's no retail cost savings (it's $199 everywhere or less). No tax savings. Shipping costs to add in. And return costs if you decide you don't like/want/need the printer.

Go to the store and buy it there instead.

Summary: Terrific little printer
Review: This is a pretty sweet little printer. It's light, with a relatively small footprint, USB connectivity and fast.

Installation was a snap on WinXP. Pop the CD in, install the drivers, plug the printer into a free USB port and let Windows do it's magic. First page out in 10 seconds, 15 ppm, manual and auto feeders and 1200 dpi. It's only a simple B/W printer (2 bit greyscale), so the print quality isn't as great as something like a 4500. But for home use, print quality looks just fine. And 15 ppm sure beats the heck out of the 2 or 3 our old BJC used to do.

Printer configuration and diagnostics are done through a web interface and web server running on your computer. It's something that can be turned off though, if you're leary of an unknown webserver running on your system.

Paper tray doesn't hold quite as much paper as I'd like, but unless you're doing a lot of printing or printing really big documents (in which case you should be using a beefier printer anyway), it shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience.

Takes thin cardstock paper just fine (30-35# or so), but I'm not sure how much heavier it will go.

Definitely a good deal if you're tired of that pokey slow inkjet. If you do heavy duty printing, you'll probably want to go with something a little more robust though.

Summary: Laserjet 1012
Review: We purchased this printer 2 months ago now and have to say that it is great. It's very very fast, very quiet and prints like a dream. Printing graphics (although in B&W) are very sharp and clear.
Best little laserjet on the market.

Summary: Functionally: Excellent. Paltry documentation
Review: This is a fine consumer/home office laserjet pinter. Affordable, quiet, compact (including a power cord with no "wall wart". Easy installation. Only two drawbacks (they are minor, but HP and other manufacturers need to pay attention to this):
(1) One of the shoddiest quick start/set-up posters I've seen. A monocrhome rebus on cheap paper. If you are not an experienced user of personal computers or printers, you may not not what you're supposed to do.
(2) No users manual. There is a 92 page pdf file, but HP (and others): please ship a manual with the product. Please!

If you can get past that...then 5 stars:-)
